Fleas on my poor dog!

Does any one have any proven methods to give a dog relief from fleas! we do the flea sprays, flea baths, etc...this spoiled dog lives indoors and only goes out to potty and stays out for maybe 15 mins max. We have bug bombed the house because we figured it couldn't hurt, even though none of us humans suffer from any bites.
My dh heard yeast tablets work??
I know about Frontline, not impressed though, for the money it costs.
I'm looking for a good flea bath, dip, or spray or how about a home remedy!! We use the Sargents brand bath and the Hartz spray.
TIA

the only thing we found that really did work was the stuff from the vet. frontline or advanage was the best. the dips and sprays and collars never really worked for us.

I agree with LittleJo. Frontline is the BEST! Before they came out with that, we used bombs that we got from the vet. The ones you bought from a regular store didn't really seem to help much. And it's been so long, I can't remember what we used on the dog (but I know it wasn't just Hartz or Sargeant, those never worked). I seem to remember taking her to the vet to have her dipped. And I'm sure it was probably more expensive than buying the Frontline after paying for the dip and several bombs to do a SMALL house. So I think you should reconsider the Frontline. It really works and it only takes a single dose as opposed to many baths, sprayings, and bombs!

Fleas are like cockroachs. It takes the professional stuff to get rid of them.

Take the dog to the vet to get him dipped. Then get some Frontline to keep them off of him.
If you were constantly being bite that way would it then be ok to spend the money????

People shouldn't have animals if they're not willing to spend the money to properly take care of the!!!!

Sorry for being so blunt, bit that's just the way it is.

We use advantage. It works great. There are a few websites you can get if for less than the vet. I use petshed.com and I know others here have other sites they use that are more reasonable than the vet. The mega petstores now even sell them but I think they tend to be more than the online stores but if you need it now its there.

She is willing to spend money on her pet, she's just looking for a less expensive alternative. She's already said she bombed her house, uses flea sprays, shampoos, and dips. I don't blame her or think she's a bad pet owner because she's seeking something cheaper to treat her problem. And I don't think she shouldn't have her dog because of that either.

Frontline here. We use this without fail and never have a problem. I have two dogs, one really big one, and the 3x.xx that it costs me is well worth it.

Garlic tablet every day. Our black lab gets 1 tablet shoved inside a bit of hot dog every morning. Fleas are gone & the garlic is also good for his heart.

For those of you that have dogs with fleas, do you treat the dog year after year? Do you not treat the yard to get rid of the fleas? We haven't had fleas or ticks in our yard for several years. When I brought home a 3 month old stray about this time last year, he had lots of fleas. I treated with flea shampoo and a flea med that I bought at Dollar General that is applied on the back like Frontline. Fleas were gone in less than a week and did not infest the yard. DH used granules several years ago to kill the ticks. He now uses a spray to keep the yard free from crickets and grubs. When the grubs are under control this helps keep the moles out of the yard.

I do tea tree pet shampoo (Paul Mitchell makes one and there are many off brands) once a month and frontline every month. I also treat the yard with Ortho stuff that attaches to the hose. When the dogs are going to be gone (dog-sitter for vacations) I spray their house/bedding as well.

I like the Garlic tablet idea - I'm gonna ask my Vet about dosage for my small dogs, plus one is diabetic/insulin dependant. I have also done the pill from the Vet that kills the fleas immediately, expensive, but it gives you a jump start.

Regular garlic tablets found in any vitamin section. I should have added in previous post:

The dog to whom I referred is with me all day, but belongs to the boss. Floyd is on Frontline or whatever most of you seem to be using for your dogs. Unfortunately, the boss isn't very good about making sure it is applied regularly. Since it is not applied frequently and on schedule, I resorted to the garlic and saw a tremendous difference. Those of you with small dogs will need to adjust for weight.

I had a horrible flea problem at the beginning of the summer. I got the Frontline from somewhere on the internet, it cost way less than it did at the vets. I also sprayed my entire house twice with some spray called Bengal. Also some Ortho stuff out in the yard. It was costly, but it worked.

We use Frontline for our dogs and all our cats and yes it is expensive, but that's ok, it's one expense I don't mind paying for. It works great for us, although sometimes doesn't last the entire 4 weeks like it's supposed to, sometimes we have to give again at 3-1/2 weeks or so, depends on your pet. As far as spraying the yard, I personally wouldn't want to spray my yard with chemicals because we have fruit trees and we grow a small amount of veggies and I prefer that they be organic and I wouldn't want to have any extra pesticides in the yard if I can help it.

The other thing about Frontline is that when they bite the pet, the fleas die, with other methods it just repells the fleas and they just jump off the pets into your carpets and house.

I wouldn't use any of that garbage you can buy at the store, especially not HARTZ!

I read multiple stories of pets, especially cats and small dogs, being poisoned because the stuff wasn't formulated correctly for small animals. Not that the owners used the wrong amount, it was the drip on the neck stuff that comes pre measured, but it was manufactured/packaged incorrectly. Not worth the risk IMHO.

Thank the gods I don't have a flea problem, my cats are indoors only and I comb them regularly just to make sure they don't get anything. I have a flea paranoria, if I so much as saw 1 flea on my cats I would high tail it to the computer and order some Frontline/Advantage! My parents used both Frontline and Advantage and are pleased. Their cats are indoor most of the time but do go out for occasional supervised jaunts and got fleas 1 time. The stuff took care of it, no muss, no fuss, no having to bathe a cat!

We have used "Bio-Spot" (we buy it at a farm suply store, but can be had at places like big box stores) for the past 3 years, no flea infestation probs here in the Mid-West as we used to have on the Jersey Shore or Philly area.)
When my first few kids were tiny, I'd bomb at least twice summer. Since "Bio-Spot", we haven't had the need to bomb even once.

We've always used frontline, but I've noticed that the last 2 years it hasn't really worked well. Last month I went to the vet to get Advantage, but they didn't sell it. I'll have to order it off the internet.

I used Frontline plus this past month and it didn't work AT ALL. I'm going to order Advantage now that the month is almost up.

I've also had a problem using Frontline on my indoor/outdoor cat. I had been using Advantage on my cat for years and decided to try Frontline for three months. Before the month was over, every month, I found fleas. Switched back to Advantage and no further problems. I have only heard/read negative things about Hartz products.

Good luck and I hope you find a solution.

I'm relived to hear that I'm not the only one not impressed with Frontline. as I orginally stated, "I'm not impressed with Frontline for the money it costs"
Brandi (my pooch) is still itching and biting...send more home remidies Please!
Anyone heard of the yeast tablets or what about Sevin dust?

I haven't heard about yeast tablets, but Seven dust worked wonders on our old Beagle. We had a bad backyard infestation, and by all means, it should glow at night with all the layers of chemicals my husband has sprayed, scattered, etc. It was awful, and I praise God it never got indoors. We powdered our dog liberally with it and not one flea came back. She was so relieved. Just really rub it in good on your dog, all over. She'll be powdery, so you may want to keep her outside, garage, or somewhere for a while. My dog shook like crazy and had poofs of it going everywhere! Wash her after you see no more evidence of fleas. You can get a good sized bag at WalMart for 5 dollars and change. If you just put it on your dog it will last forever, but if you have problems in your yard, scatter it everywhere! It may take more than once. Use rubber gloves, we just scattered it like you would chicken feed. I really feel for you. Fleas are the pits. Good luck.

Also, alot of people don't believe in putting this on animals, so be warned.

my sil swears that you should wait three days after a bath before you put frontline on. the skin is wet with water and the frontline will not aborb. They have very few problems
