Smile Going back to my roots (hair roots that is)

I have decided to figure out just what my natural hair color is. I have been coloring my hair, with differnt things, since I was 13 years old. I'm 37 now!! I have no idea what color I really am.

I do have a question though. I've been going blond, really really blond. Will I have to get the blond cut off or will it eventually turn back? I know that is such a dumb question but I truely don't know. It is to the point now that it looks like crap, I have a good 2" of roots showing. I've tried this before and I get to about this point and just can't stand it and end up reverting to my old ways. Please please tell me we have a beautician on here.

Is there anything I can do to speed up this stage??

Edited - Thought of something else. Could I color the blond parts to match my roots? The last time I tried to go dark I ended up purple so it kinda scares me.

Well, you could do like I did and just shave it all off-I know where we could sign you up for a good fundraiser-lol...I have been going blonde for the last 20yrs. It is so odd to see myself so dark now. My problem when I had my hair so bleached out, was even if I tried to go darker, it would just wash out so fast, given that my hair just got to a point where it could not hold any color. My hair is so mousy-looking right now, but I am trying to hold out to see if I want to do the color route again. I am so tempted to go platinum!

The hair will have to be cut off. You could try a temporary rinse, or a color close to the roots if you can't tolerate the color difference while it's growing out.

I tried that this winter. I have been doing my hair since high school---various shades of brown--but have gone blonde when the top showed very white roots. The blonde and the white are more compatible but I just got tired to doing it so I started to grow it out. Unfortunately, the back of my hair is steel grey and that is one ugly color.

I gave up again and put the blonde in...but I do agree with the poster above, that you could put a non permanent rinse in to try to keep the roots and the blonde similar.

I'm a hairdresser and here's what I suggest. If you have 2 inches of your natural hair showing, get a color that's the closest color to that and color all over , the growing out process will be painless. I would hate to use a temporary rinse everytime you shampoo, plus with temp. rinses, they don't penetrate the hairshaft like permanent or demi permanent color. I'm 37 also, and have quite a bit of grey, do you as well? That may make the growing out a bit difficult (if you decide to color,) when the grey starts shining through, but I still say that's better than having blonde ends with natural new growth. What is your natural color? Good luck!! I have a salon in my home and if we lived closer I'd have you come over and we'd play beauty shop!

I would not know what my "real" haircolor is I honestly have only a vague idea at this point.

Anyway if I did not color it I would look like an English lawyer (whitehaired that is LOL).

Good luck the last time I tried growing out natural was in about 1977 and after looking exactly like the orangutan in our anthropology class in ninth grade.

I didn't start coloring my hair until I started going grey, very young. Now, I have to color it at least evry 6 weeks, or I am shining white! I HATE it!! I have never went blonde though, most people don't realize that I color my hair.
