Looking for an expert on creditors

Hasn't someone here worked collecting bills at one time? I need advice please!

Every morning this week, just a few minutes after 8, Wells Fargo Mortgage has called here looking for a relative of mine. I've told them more than once that the relative lives in another state, but they keep calling here. I've about had it!

My number is on the DNC list, the thing of it is though is that I actually have my mort with these idiots. I know they can call me to talk about my mort, but can they continue to harass me about someone else's?

One more thing....while the mort is due the 1st of the month, WF has a grace period till the 16th. These relatives apparently pay by the 10th. Afaik, they've never gone past the grace period or been assessed a late charge.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Sadly they can call you. The family member has given them YOUR number as a 2nd contact. Same thing happen to me with my niece. After the 100th called looking for her, I finally got really ugly with the lady and told her since I've already told you 99 times before she doesn't live here, don't call back. she said something to me about the phone numbers being the same of the medical form as my number she was calling. I told her well if she's NOT paying you what the hell makes you think she's paying this phone bill. ???.. Must have worked, I've not heard back form them since that time. I want to say, there's a law that says once you tell them to stop calling they can only contact you Via snail mail.

Actually, they haven't. They didn't use my information at all.

Hmm wonder how they got your number then ?? I know they can do look ups to find your closes neighbor, but never heard of them just falling upon a family member. how would they even know you knew this person then ?? Are you sure they didn't give your number and just telling you they didnt give it. ?? ( This doesn't seem right as to how they "Found" you, but not any one else in the family to call. ).. Did you ask the collections department how they found you ?? I would want to know 1st and far most how they connected us as being family close enough to contact each other.

The relatives used to live at this address. 17 years ago.

That happened to us for a while. BIL was having great financial difficulty, then went into the service. He was overseas and his creditors started calling us. He had never lived with us, never used us as a contact or anything. Creditors start searching for relatives any where or way they can find them. We finally got ugly with them, too. I think once you tell them to stop calling you, they have to quit. At first we just kept saying he's in the service and we're not responsible for his bills. Finally we told them to stop calling. They actually did stop.

I guess you could always call your local DA's office and ask about this. I would also tell the collections this as well. I still would have questions for the family member on how they found you tho. Even if they did live there 17 years ago, Unless they had the mortgage on the home you are living in then the collections would have no clue that you and them are family members ( KWIM?). If they moved out of state did they sell the home that had this mortgage on it ? . Something is not adding up on this as I see it. I really don't think the family member is being truthful with you on how WF got your number.
(major pet peeve with me on people giving my phone number out and this is why ).
In those 17 years since they have lived there, unless you have lived there since that time they moved, that house has changed hands a few times ( KWIM).But even so, they still wouldn't contact you just by living in a home they use to live in 17 years ago, as they have lived somewhere in that time frame why not contact their last known address before buying a home with WF.. I personally would want answers from my family member on this, If a collections can call you on a mortgage that is 'in good standing per the grace " then if they default on anything else, you'll be the one they will start contacting each time.

They can call you ONCE to ask for information on your relative's whereabouts. They cannot say that they are collecting a debt. If you advise them you do not have this information, they cannot continue to call.

This link is to the Fair Debt Collections Practices Act. I would mention this LOUDLY if they call again, and then I would file a complaint.

Bank Of America called me a bunch of times about my dad, I have no idea how they got my number since my last name is different and he would never give out my phone number.

Finally I got MAD and asked for a manager and told him if they called again I was going to report them. (to who I don't know) It all stopped.

I just got a call today for the people who lived in our house before us, and they were evicted about 5 years ago.
