Smile What are the essential questions to ask when looking at a college?

DS has decided he wants to attend a technical school instead of traditional college. We are fine with this because we honestly figured he wouldn't go to any kind of college. Right now he is looking at Automotive Training | Nashville Automotive and Diesel College at NADC .

We are going this weekend to have a look at the school and get more information. It seems quite high to me. For 13 months it will cost $22,100. I already have a few questions wrote down but I'm at a lost for what I need to ask. DH nor I went to college so all of this is completely foriegn to me. So any suggestions....

I don't know anything about this type of school, but I think that I'd ask questions about their placement rates, a list of companies where their graduates are employed, and starting salaries.

22K seems awfully high for a tech school but then again, I have absolutely no experience here.

Actually I just found out that my oldest is going to be graduating a year early (yeah!) so I need to get on the ball with this college stuff. He's already taking some JC classes but I think he would love to go to a tech school for sound engineering. I suppose we need to start applying or at least getting ready to apply to colleges. Eek!

Is 13 months a full program? Will he have obtained the necessary skills, trainings and certifications at the end of 13 months to be employable? And if so, in what capacity (entry level, supervisory, etc.)? Are there any extra costs within that 13 months that you'll be responsible for?
Like CJS said--ask about the success of their graduates, job placement assistance, career planning.

FWIW--if this is a vocational/tech program, and 13 months is the full and final program--meaning your son will have the skills, knowledge and certifications he needs at the end of 13 months, then $22K is equivalent to 4 years in a fairly decent University.

Thanks everyone, I'm getting good little list going. I don't know a lot about the school at this point. He visited the school through the local vocational school. He really liked it. From my understanding this isn't like a local vocational school. They have schools all over the US.

Igotscammed - congrats to you and your son on him graduating a year early! That is absolutely wonderful.

Annadrose - The school is only about an hour and fifteen minutes from our home. He wants us to pay for him an apartment up there. So I'm sure partying is up there on his list. I really don't think I'm going to pay for him to live there. He may just have to do that on his own.

Are they required to buy certain tools/toolkits and what is the average cost. My nephew graduated from a similer program. I recall that the cost of the tools was astronomical. He had no problem getting a job. Even though at first it seemed really high, after diseccting the time it wasn't that much out of the norm. His program was an intensive 13 months. No summer off, no spring or fall break. It was full time school for 13 months.

That's exactly what this is. Continuous school for the full 13 months.

College MatchMaker - Type of School

I don't know if this site lists vocational schools but it may be helpful to others in their college searches. Lots of important facts: good overview of colleges.
