Friends over after school

My dd, 8 years old, is always having a friend ride the bus home with her after school for a play date. Sometimes I feel that parents try to turn this into "date night" for themselves, example, a friend is coming over today, for the first time, and after talking to the mom I guess this little girl is hanging out until further notice, to be recieved around 7:30-8:00pm when her mom is going to call/text me!
Not really sure how it happened, I'm not a push over, but between bad phone reception and telling this mom of our plans to go to the high school football game ($5.00 a head x5 ) I like to go and watch the game not keep track of kids- ya' know what I mean??- also, dinner has to be in there somewhere, usally a drive thru on the way! I'm feeling like this mom took this invite and ran with it! She said she would be at the game "somewhere" and she'll text or call me....
So, I'm wondering what does "come over after school" mean at your house?
Of course when dd has a friend sleep over than the above package is all inclusive....

Personally, I would say 1 maybe 2 hours at the most. After that they need to go and I have things I need to get done.

We only do friends over after school about one day a week, because of sports, homework, chores, ect... And I know the parents well of the friends who do come over. Come over after school would mean up until dinner, I would have said, "well, we will be leaving at XXX(time) so do you want me to drop her off when we leave, or will you pick her up before that?" That way she(mom) knows that you are not offering babysitting services so she can go out!
Good luck
Becky

my kids have friends over on the weekends. usually bringing someone home on the bus and then the next day they go home. If the girl's mom is gonna be at the game then I would of said we will be at the game at so and so time and will meet you by the gate. That way you dont have to cough up 5 bucks for her. Then after the mom had made contact you could let her and your daughter hang out during the game and you would only have to worry about keeping up with your own.

I've had these kind of situations arise sometimes when the kids are making their own arrangements. The child might have told the other mom the "plan" as if it was approved.....I know that's happened to us before. Setting the rules of engagement with my own kid has helped. Just a thought...

My daughter loves having friends over and they love to stay here. If it is on a Friday that they come over ...they usually spend the weekend. I just think of them as one of the family. She is 9.

I've had that happen before, and it always seems to be with the kids that are a challenge. You know how some kids come over and just sort of blend in with your family and others just cause disruptions? I ended up have to set the time they had to go home before they could even come over - and make sure the Mom knew it. We had too many times that we had to work the next day, it was time for us to go to bed and the Mom/Dad was nowhere to be found!

My daughter often has friends come over after school on Friday....and they stay until Sunday afternoon. She has one friend who has two little brothers who drive the girls crazy, so I know they have a much better time at our home. I don't mind if we don't have any plans for the weekend. They are good kids...
