Question what is purpose of rep points

As I didn't get an answer to my question in the other thread.....

Can someone (maybe a MOD?????) explain once and for all, exactly what is the point of rep points?

I readily admit that I haven't the faintest idea what the whole "rep points" thing is about.

I'd like to know what the rep power number means and what the green bars mean.

What do they actually MEAN??? I have no real clue on that.

What do people use them for??? Well, some people give a "disapprove" rating and leave a nasty comment. Some give an "approval" rating and leave a nice comment. Some do it opposite.....for instance, I got a "disapproval" with a nice comment. Go figure. I really don't pay much attention to it.

I think there is a thread explaining it on the help desk, tho.

Nothing!! Only my opinion ,of course.

There is another board where people actually beg for the reps.
So what purpose are they??

Not like we are saving up to get a prize, LOL.

Well, this is the post on the help desk -- and it makes absolutely NO SENSE whatsoever to me.

I cannot believe that anyone would find this system useful. Sounds pretty juvenile to me.

"Rep Power" Explained

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This "Rep Power" system allows members to keep tabs on their MyCoupons Community. In the same way a "neighborhood watch" program works. Members can work together to keep bad posters (spammers, advertisers, offensive members) out. Also, members can make sure good posters get recognized.

Ratings can go positive or negative, so it is not simply a system to knock down other people. Many of the most well-recognized online communities use such systems. As with any change, not everyone will be completely accepting but, with time, this system should make the ShoppingBoards a better place to post and reply.

This is our future, and we will be putting more systems into place where members help moderate the MyCoupons Community. Thanks for your help!
------------------------

The User Reputation system allows members to leave comments about one another’s' posts, and thereby contribute to their overall 'reputation'.

Members gain and lose reputation based on how their posts are scored by other forum Members. Users with the ability to affect reputation will either give or take away points by approving or disapproving with a post's content.

Point System

Default Reputation = 10

Number of Reputation Ratings to Display = 10
How many ratings to display in the member's control panel.

Register Date Factor = 365

Post Count Factor = 10

Reputation Point Factor = 1
For every 1 points of reputation, members gain 1 point of reputation-altering power.

Minimum Post Count = 50
How many posts must a member have before his reputation hits count on others?

Minimum Reputation Count = 10

Daily Reputation Clicks Limit = 10

Reputation User Spread = 20
