When I first moved out on my own, I was able to live with very little in order to stay within my means and build a household gradually. I didn't have any LR furniture, a TV, or a kitchen or dining room table for a long time. What I did have that you don't mention is a bed with linens. I know some people start out with Aero beds or inflatable mattresses, but I wanted a real bed. An inexpensive dish set, some glassware and silverware would probably also be pretty essential (look for back-to-school markdowns for these if you're buying new) and a small microwave, if the place doesn't have one. You'll probably also need a bunch of incidentals....garbage can, shower curtain, rod & hooks, etc. cj/

If you do not have alot of extra money to buy alot of things let all your family and friends know that you are moving out on your own and can use ANYTHING, you may be surprised at what people will give you. A friend of our just did this and we gave them a rocking chair, a bunch of food from my stockpile, lots of other odds and ends, another friend gave them a loveseat, someone else gave them dishes, coffee mugs and silverware, someone else gave them a bed, they just got stuff from all over, just by letting everyone know they needed stuff. Moving out on your own is expensive anyway with all the deposits for utilities, initial food to purchase, cleaning supplies you don't think about I have to buy toilet paper, toothpaste, paper towels, trash bags, soap, aluminum foil, all those extra type things too.

While it's not always the least expensive option, Bed, Bath and Beyond always has 20% off one item, and $5 off $15 coupons. They accept them beyond expiration (60 days, I think) and also competitor coupons for anything they also carry. Linen's n Things is currently going out of business, here 25, 30, 40, and 50% depending on the items. Another resource would be yard sales, or a Goodwill type store. Just think of what items you are currently using in the household you are in. dl |

Don't forget you will need a lawnmower! I also agree with Penny - people are upgrading or changing decor all the time - if you let people know you're moving into your 1st house, lots of them will be happy to give stuff to you. Lisa

If you have Freecycle (Yahoo groups) in your area you can maybe pick up things from there that people no longer want.

I would second the bed along with kitchen items (plates, silverware, glasses). Using kitchen items will save you money instead of buying paper plates and plastic cups.

I think the "letting your family and friends know you'd be happy with any donations" is a good idea. After asking family and friends, I would definitely go to yard sales every chance I could. Check the classified section in your local newpaper on Thursday to find out where the yard sales are, and make sure you're there as soon as they start. (The early bird gets the worm!) Some bargains I've found at yard sales over the years include a nice 7-pc bedroom suite for $225 (no mattress), nice couch & loveseat (almost new) for $25 for both, a beautiful old pine hutch/sideboard for $50, a 6-seat maple table and chairs for $47, and two 4-drawer wooden dressers for $5 each. Also hit the Goodwill & Salvation Army stores, flea market, Target clearance, and any other stores with clearance merchandise, scratch & dent furniture, etc. You should be able to find decent cheap furniture at yard sales and the Goodwill type stores. If can't find furniture by these means you can always make due with a couple of bean bag chairs, a card table & chairs, those plastic drawer storage type thingys for a temporary dresser, etc. And of course, keep checking the LWIF boards here at MyCoupons! Recently on the LWIF B&M board there was a post that Walgreens had the Magic Bullet on clearance for $15.49 (reg $49.99). Several MyCouponers (including myself) were able to pick one up at that price. They also had a rice cooker, a 12-cup coffee maker and a 6-cup food processor all marked down to $4.19 (reg $15.99), a steam iron for $5.49 (reg $19.99), and a blender/food processor marked down to $7.49 (reg $29.99). This was almost 2 weeks ago, so they probably don't have any left..... But, if you have a Walgreens near you, it wouldn't hurt to check and see. The shelves were empty where the tags were when I looked, but I was able to find these items on the very top shelf where the overstock is. The coffee maker, rice cooker, and food processors were Signature Gourmet brand and they were white. The Magic Bullet was in a red box, but from what I read I think they may have put the price on those back up to $49.99. You can always just ask them to scan an item to double check the price for you. Who knows, you may get lucky. You don't have to start off with top of the line "everything"..... You can pick up a lot of kitchen and home essentials at the Dollar Tree (if you have one in your area), and just upgrade as your finances allow. Some other household items you may need..... basic tools (hammer, screwdrivers, wrench, pliers, etc.) flashlight & candles (for when the power goes out) flatware/cutlery tray kitchen towels & pot holders dishrack (if you don't have a dishwasher) hamper/clothes basket plunger Good luck with your move! .

It depends on how much money you have to spend. If you have a good amount to spend, I would get a nice table & chairs for the kitchen or dining room, a couch, chair(s) tables and entertainment center for the living/family room and a bedroom set (mattress, bed, night tables, dresser, etc.) and bed linnens, and any other decorative items (artwork, lamps, etc.) that you see and like. If money is tight, first get a really good mattress and an inexpensive bed frame (most mattress places sell them for very inexpensive) and a set of good sheets. If you can't afford a dresser, hang most of your clothing in the closet and use plastic bins and/or drawers for socks, underware, etc. Then get a table and chairs -- get a card table and chairs set if that is all you can afford. It will be functional and when you can afford a nicer table & chairs, you can hold on to the folding set for when you have guests, etc. Look for inexpensive seating for the living room -- Target has those 'dome chairs' on clearance right now for very inexpensive. You'll probably also want something to set the TV on so its not on the floor. As family and friends for donations. Someone probably has a couch in their basement that they aren't using. If its hideous fabric, you can always slipcover it until you can afford a new one. Thrift stores and yard sales are also good places to look. Even Craigslist or something like that -- if you keep an eye it, you may find a really good deal. Good luck... Sarah...........mom to Jaosn & Devin |

Since he's your finance', will you be getting married soon and then you can have a bridal shower and get things for your house. Until then maybe get some things at yard sales to tide you over and that way you won't have a lot of junk to get rid of after you're married.

Get thee to a thrift store! I'd thrift as much as your kitchen stuff as you can. Think about it-dishes that aren't broken are perfectly functional and are easily sanitized with hot water so there's no worry about thrift store cooties. Get plates, mugs, glasses, utensils, baking pans, etc. I'd just stay away from electrical appliances. Toasters and mixers are cheap enough to just buy new. Some people may disagree with this but I say check out the bedding too. Unfold the sheets to make sure they aren't worn or stained. Wash them in hot water and you're good to go. Same with blankets and towels. Check out the furniture too, I see lots of decent table/chair sets for $25 or so.

| my 1st vote would be Old Time Pottery store But >>>>> If you can get by for now with out a coffee pot, toaster, mini chopper, hand mixer wait till the After Thanksgiving black friday sale at wal-mart, they will have these items for 5.00- 10.00 or less. they have them every single year. Also, many many stores will run their Black Friday sales with household items with 10%-40% coupons. I have seen sheets, towels,pots/pans, dishes, silverware, glassware, decor items ranging from stores ( example, Jc penny's, sear's, pier 4, etc) Also, some stores will run a B1G1 example CVS, Walgreens on kitchen items. Try to get by with as little as needed for now and save some money for the After Thanksgiving sales where your money will got futher for items you are needing. But, if you jsut can't do it check with your local SA,Bargin center, flea markets, clearance sales, Old time pottery is ALWAYS having some kind of sale going on. Good luck and congrats on your 1st place. |
