My grandmother had one before she passed away. It was paid for by Medicare as part of her Hospice benefit (I think). They hooked a box to her phone. If you pushed the button on the box or on the 'necklace' it would call them. You told them what the problem was (or if you pushed by accident) and they would respond accordingly. You are supposed to wear the necklace 24/7 while at home, even in the shower. It would be good if neither of them were able to get to the phone (grandma lived by herself), but if one of them could call 911 if something happened to the other, then I don't know how much benefit it would be to them.

also find out false alarms are handled. Some companies will charge for false alarms--and depending on the city where you live, the responding police department/EMS/Fire may also charge for false alarms as well.

My mom has one and that is what she used when she fell back in august, Thank god she had it or she would have laid on the floor probably for 12 hours or more until the neighbor came by to bring in the mail. EMS broke the front door down because Lefeline forgot to tell them the neigbor had a key and where the spare was but that was fine and for some reason I was not called like I was supposed to be, but that is in the past and Mom is fine for now until the next fall. I would higly recommend it. One thing you should know is that you cannot use a dialup computer with it so if you go to visit you wont be able to log in it interferes with it and will boot you offline. i had to get a broadband modem from my wireless company to access the net while I was there. They do run a test on it regularly and ask that the client test the system also regulary, my mom does it weekly and I am thankful she has it with me being 800 miles away it is a blessing.

In terms of "false alarms" when using the device..I will check with their local fire department..But does the life alert company also "charege" when it is pushed?? Thanks,
