New Baby - GC Recommendation

One of my employees is expecting his first child. We took up a collection and have ~$125 for a GC. Where would you recommend that I get it?

Wal-Mart or Target....depending on whichever is closest or more to the taste of family.

I'm in favor of Target. I know many people would say "Babies R Us," but I think you get more bang for your buck at Target, IMHO.

What a great gift, wherever you choose!

I chose Target, too. Babies R us is a bit over priced IMO.

I also say TARGET, hands down, the same stuff is there (from Babies R Us), and it is much cheaper... What a nice gift!

I voted for the Visa, that way they can use it wherever they want.

I voted for the Visa card. You can spend anywhere...so not limited to one store.

Hmmm....I was able to find them registered on both target.com and babiesrus. There's a number of items left on their target list, so maybe that's a good bet.

Thanks.

Target. I haven't been in a Babies R Us in years...but back in the day, I thought their prices were very high. Target has very cute baby things. ~Lisa

I've never bought a VISA gift card, but I've heard that some of the "credit card" type gift cards charge a fee to purchase them. There is no way I'd pay a fee to get someone a giftcard.

I'd go with whatever store is closest to the parents to be.

If they're close to a bunch of stores then I'd go for Target.

They not only charge a few to purchase, they also charge a "finance"
charge after so long of like $2 a month.

This happened to a gc from visa my grandmother had.

Target or Walmart - whatever is closest to them. If you want to shop for them, stock them up on diapers and wipes - you can never have enough....

I would go with Target, especially if they are registered there. Babies R Us has more choices, but they are also more expensive.

I don't like the Visa gift cards because you have to keep track of your balanace and you can only spend the amount on the card (if you are even $.01 over, the transaction will be declined and not all cashiers can/know how to split the tender so you can pay the difference). On most store gift cards (Target for sure), the cashier can scan the card and then charge you the difference in another form of payment without you knowing exactly how much is on the card.

If it turns out they don't need anything for the baby -- very unlikely, I know -- they could always use the Target card for something for themselves (toothpaste, shampoo, whatever).

What is the financial situation of the parents? If they are struggling a bit (especially w/ expenses regarding a new baby) then I would go practical-probably Target. If they are not struggling at all, I would get them a g.c. to a romantic restaurant. That may sound weird, but someone did that for us once. It took a couple of months to be able to use it, but once we did, and we were out for an evening (Grandparents watched the kids), it was absolutely blissful. And we had no guilt that we were not spending the $$ on Luvs and formula.
