Thinning hair help!

I have always had baby fine hair. Even as a kid I could have a ponytail with one of those little hair thingies that you use for pigtails to hold the whole ponytail. Toddler clips even slide right out of my hair unless they are the really tight ones. So now at my age it is also really starting to thin out. If I don't wash my hair one day by the next morning it shows parts of my scalp. It's just really fine and thin. It's not horrible yet but it is heading that way. I have tried Nioxin, etc... I really don't think there are any products out there that can help me. One of these days I might just try to find a wig shop and have my son buzz my head! lol At least then I would know what it's like to have hair! I have never been able to style it either because it's just too fine, too thin and gets damaged too easily. I am hot all the time, always have been, so the wig idea might be pretty difficult for me. My thyroid is fine by the way. Any suggestions?????

Well, first of all, if you are going to shave your head, then let's get YOU signed up for St. Baldrick's day in March. You can be on my team:

St. Baldrick's Foundation - Welcome

I was able to raise over $3000 for pediatric cancer research.

All kidding aside, my hair was pretty thin, albeit from too many chemicals, before I had my head shaved last March. While it is still very short (think Jamie Lee Curtis pixie cut), I cannot believe how thick and soft it is. I actually did look at a few wigs after I got shaved, but the decent ones were just way too expensive. I think the best suggestion would just be to go with a really short cut. Wish I could offer you more help.

My hair has always been thick, but has gotten thinner once I hit 40. I remember reading that if it's not your thyroid it can be a lack of biotin too. I'm kind of fuzzy on that though. . .but google it and see what you find.
HTH

ETA: I found this it probably doesn't hurt to try:

I think I've had biotin shampoo before. I will have to check. I think I am just doomed in the hair department! lol I really noticed how awful my hair was from the pictures my son just took at the McCain rally we went to. It was breezy so my hair was blowing a bit and in one picture he took I could really see how thin and my hair is and how you can see parts of my scalp. Gosh, I didn't know it was that bad already!!!

I am right there with you. When I was younger my hair was so thick it would take all day to dry. Now it is really really thin. I had one woman ask me if I was on chemo! I have tried all of the shampoos, even looked into hair plugs. I used to keep it light in color thinking that it wouldn't look so thin, but then a stylist suggested to go darker. I was so surprised. But I know it is still thin and I have to live with it. What I would love to see is Oprah do one of her makeover shows and work with someone that is folically challenged.

Me too. Let's write Oprah! I used to hi-lite it. I tried professional hair extensions but they didn't work either. They poked through! I never had thick hair. I have absolutely NO CLUE what that would be like. What do we do?? I don't know if it's worse to have had thick hair and loose it or to have never had it at all!

Medication can cause thin hair. One of my coworkers used mascara on her scalp to hide her scalp from shining thru. Don't laugh it made her feel a whole lot better about herself. Just please don't do a comb over like the men do. Maybe if you had your hair cut in layers one layer would hide the the others making the hair look fuller.

Have you tried coloring it? it does wonders for thin hair, and dont keep it long, shoulder length or shorter is good for thin hair anything longer and it weighs the hair down and it looks thinner then it is, my mom used rogain and it worked great but you have to stay on it, I wanted to try this myself.
my mom has hers short and hilighted and she has the thinist hair I have ever saw or worked with, he hair turns to fuzz with a perm but the color is
great it adds body .

I have always had fine hair too. One day without a wash and oily has heck. So I kept it frosted to deal with the slick head look. It recently started thinning as well. I started taking B12 shots and now my hair stays on my head instead of falling out on my pillow.

Wow - I guess I'm not alone. I thought my thinning hair was caused from Lupus. I do agree that the coloring adds a little body. I think I'm gonna try that again. I use to stress about my scalp showing through but I had to get over it. Let people think what they want - I've gotten really bold over the last year.

Kathytheshopper - I agree with you about the wigs. I run hot and there's no way that I'd want to put a wig on my head.

One other thing I wanted to add. I had severe anemia at one point, and my hair would come out in clumps. Make sure you are not anemic, are getting enough B-vitamins and biotin, and protein. It may not be the cause of your thinning hair, sounds like yours has always been on the thin side, but it certainly won't hurt to make sure you aren't deficient with any of those. I agree about the coloring. . .that should definitely help too.
