Unhappy Grocery Prices!!

Grocery prices!! Ackkk! I just got back home from grocery shopping. I can't believe how the prices have gone up just from last week.

Have prices gone up a lot in your area since last week or the last 2 weeks? What are people going to do? I really had to cut back a lot more than usual today due to the sticker shock.

Example: A 5 lb bag of potatoes -- $4.97! Used to buy them for a little over $2.00.

Food Lion had a meat sale a couple of weeks ago and I stocked up on a couple of roasts and chicken. Good thing I did or we would have been eating peanut butter sandwiches this week!

I noticed today a lot more people with coupons in their hands. Usually I only see a few people with them. Today people were actually leaving coupons they couldn't use beside items on the shelves.

Ideas on how to make grocery shopping less expensive would be greatly appreciated by everyone!

I've noticed that fresh fruit i our area has really gone up. It doesn't matter if you buy from the store or at a Farmers Market either. I would hope buying from the source would be cheaper but it's not.

I went to buy apples the other day. I usually pay $1 a pound for organic apples on sale. I saw some apples and YIKES...$2.99 a pound. That equated to 2 apples for $2.99...uh, no thanks.

I haven't noticed meat prices but I buy my meat 2 times a year and each time lasts 6 month

It's tough when all the stuff that's good for you is so much money. You can buy the crap for cheap and that irritates me

I get a lot of bread products at an outlet store for less than half of hte grocery store. Buy in bulk and freeze it. The other things I buy at the grocery store at fresh produce, a few canned goods, some cereal and chips. The majority of my items I find much cheaper at Costco or online. I shop Amazon's grocery store a lot. I get milk delivered from a local dairy (but we only use 1.5 gallons a week for the 4 of us) and buy the meat in bulk. It helps out only going to the grocery store 2 times a month or so but then I'm more sticker shocked when I do go in

I feel your pain!

I was thinking that it would be good to go in on bulk items from some of the Cosco type of stores - for example, I don't need 40 rolls of bathroom tissue, but if I go in on these items with others, we all benefit. But there are some issues.

The issues are

1. How many of us truly can be flexible about what brand is the best deal

2. How many of us are buying enough of the same items to make this a worthwhile endeavor?

So, no - I don't have a good system in place right now, but I am on the lookout for a better plan than the one I've got now...

Suggestions

Look around outside of your town for orchards or farms that produce vegetables. Now is the time for winter squash , potatoes etc. One of the farms in our area just had their U-pick-em up day for potatoes. They dug them and people brought their own containers and picked up potatoes for .12 a lb. That way, you get only the ones you want.

Go to the orchards and buy apples. You can make applesauce very easily and it can be frozen instead of canned. I like to add cinnamon to mine.

If you do go to the bulk stores, split some of the bigger purchases with a friend or two. Find out beforehand if this is something they would want to do.

Also if you have the money, buy your beef directly from a farmer. They will often sell a quarter or half. You'll have to pay for processing, but you could save big bucks if you have a large enough family.

Hope these help some.

The farmers markets/produce stands around here are equal to or more than the grocery stores. I've given up on them.

I buy most of my groceries at Super WalMart. I buy everything there except produce and fresh meat. I will buy packaged meat there - lunch meat, smoked sausage, that kind of stuff.

I've noticed a loaf of Sara Lee Whole Wheat bread is $2.87 at my grocery store and $1.97 at WalMart. They're anywhere from a little to a lot cheaper on almost everything. However, I'm scared of their meat and their produce just sucks. Which is kind of weird because both the produce and meat are awesome down the street at Sams.

I've been buying more stuff that we use in bulk at Sams, too. Their fruit is always good.

I ran into the store for just a few things the other day and it was $49! It's insane!

I buy 98% of my groceries at Wal-Mart Super Center. I buy meat at my locally owned grocery store. DS likes bologna so I buy turkey bologna which W-M does not sell. One pkg was costing $1.59 last May when school was over, $1.95 when school started in Aug and this week it's $2.05.

I try and really stock up when stuff I use goes on sale. For example Pastene Tomatoes were .66 cents per can this week so I bought 36 cans. Barilla Pasta .66cents so I bougt 36 boxes.
When essentials such as Toilet Paper and Toothpaste go on sale same there.
I did pick up 5lbs of Potatoes for 1.99 and today I hit the number on the reduced produce shelves and the stuff was absolutely excellent. Zucchini .39 cents/lb, Cauliflower .99/hd Red Peppers .49 / lb
Don't overlook the bakery markdown rack also sometimes good stuff there too.

In saying that I am still spending a fortune each week on grocereies especially COLD CUTS!!! The prices are nuts. Land o lakes cheese 5-6 dollars per lb. roast beef 8.00/lb God it's terribly expensive making lunch for 3 kids.
And milk is crazy.

I am still doing the double coupons and just buying more of things that are on sale. Last week the store had ground turkey on sale for 1.00 lb, so I bought 15 lbs. that has gone into spaghetti sauce, chili, Manwich sandwich, meatloaf, anything I usually make with groung beef (that is in a sauce, my DH draws the line at tacos, LOL, I thought they were ok, but he said not again, only ground beef, so next time maybe half and half? LOL) because another store has it on sale for $1 a lb this week. I had coupons for fresh chicken so we have been eating alot of chicken, baked, fried, chicken salad. We haven't had a steak in a couple of months, we used to eat steak at least once a week and pork chops once a week and a roast once a week and I haven't been buying any of those items in the past couple of months, just been going for things on sale.

I am noticing really high grocery prices too-some items even going from $2-$4 in such a short period of time. However, I am noticing a lot more stores offerering better sales, more BOGO's, and better coupon incentives. For example, Harris Teeter only used to do triples 2x per year-it seems that they are running it every three months now. And we have another local grocery store that is now doing double coupons. Just got a flyer from K-Mart, and I HATE K-mart, that they are doing doubles up to a $2 value. I am collecting all of my $1 coupons and will make a day of it. I still by my meat at Harris Teeter after it's been marked down 75% Gross to some, but we have never had a problem with this. I only buy produce that is on sale. I think that during this crisis, those of us that actually have a budgeting ability, know how to use coupons, know how to look for sales, we won't be feeling the hurt so much.

Try adding 1 teaspoon of powdered beef bullion per pound of ground turkey. It really helps for tacos... My family really likes the ground turkey tacos when I do this!

I am also in NE and love those two items as well. This week, Shaws (known as Star market in some areas) has the Pastene tomatos for 88 cents. Last week the barilla pasta was on sale at Stop n Shop. I stocked up, but not in quite the quantity that the op did.

I used to love to see the new grocery fliers every week and would grab my coupons and match them up with the great deals to bring home alot of great grocery bargains. Now when the fliers come, I have a hard time making up a list becauses the prices are terrible. I have told the kids to stop quenching their thirst with milk and the fresh squeezed orange juice, Not only are these items really expensive, but I am sick of constantly running out and having to make a special trip to the store which is not close-by. They have to learn to appreciate water. We buy a 3 lb block of LOL cheese presliced at a local meat market, break it up and freeze the rest.

Also want to add that last spring DH and I watched a news segment on how the high cost of corn would drive beef and other meat prices way up- alot of cattle will be slaughtered because of lack of money to feed them, then the low inventory will cause prices to sky rocket. We all have to learn to live on less meat. Stirfry is a great recipe to accomplish this.

If you eat *healthy* you really get slammed. I cannot beleive the cost of fresh fruit and vegetables. We try to avoid high fat items (which seem to be the cheapest). We have been eating wraps several nights a week. A few pounds of boneless chicken breast can be stretched a long way if you use it for wraps. But, the cost of the vegetables and cheese to add to it are costly. We also try to make a huge batch of chilli and make it last several meals. Now that fall is here, I plan to cook a large turkey every few weeks. Last year at this time I was paying 58 cents a pound for frozen tukey at Super Walmart....now it is 98 cents a pound.

Mailady- yes, it's unfortunate that with the corn prices soaring what we've had to charge to make up for the corn increase. For instance, last year when we sold our beef, we sold it for $2.59lb (we made a couple hundred dollars from each one) and this year we are selling for $2.85 lb and won't make a cent! Yes, we'll get the money back for the feed and the animal, but that's it. A whole year and a half not to make a penny. No wonder farms are selling out.

I've noticed a huge increase in what we buy too. We buy no meats (we raise our own beef, chickens and pork, then buy a lamb from a friend). Our monthly bill used to be around $250. Now, I'm lucky if I can get the stuff for $400. I've resorted to baking more from scratch and going to the amish salvage stores, where I can buy canned veggies for 3-$1, pasta for .39cents a box, juices for $1.25 a bottle, dressings for $.59, etc. So, if you live in an amish community, ask around....it'll save you big!

I have become a Super WalMart shopper also and have been having trouble getting meat to fit into the budget. What my SO & I have started doing it getting up early and hitting the marked down meat.

Dh wanted Sprite yesterday. I ran to the store to get a few things and this. It was $5.09 for a 12 pack (on sale, plus we have .10 deposit on cans, so another $1.20 on top of that). He can wait until we go to Sam's club this weekend.

It's a shame when you can go out to eat just as cheap as trying to make it at home at times it's CHEAPER to eat out.Right now just about every single place has some kind of special whether it's a kids eat free with paying adult, or buy get 1 free.We are not talking 15.00 a person either, One place here the kids eat free with paying adult ( up to 2 free kids ) the prices run from 2.99 to 6.99 it's shameful if you ask me.

Any hoot,
my DH asked me to pick him some apples up last week, I nearly had heart failure when I saw the price at wal-mart and Winn Dixie both were 5.99 for a 4 lb bag of red apples. thats 1.49 a pound..Bananna's are running anywhere from .59 a pound to .79 a pound ( wonder if they come with a Monkey too ? at those prices it should ).
Bread, Holy cow !! even wal-mart has gone up use to be .97 now it's 1.39, name brand is 1.69.Won't even go there on the milk as thats been over priced for a year or so, 6.00 a gallon for name brand, 5.00 for store brand unreal !.
I went last night to wal-mart and picked up a few self made dinners, even at buying 2 bags of somethings was cheaper than having to buy everything needed for same dinner. I forget what brand it was, but it's a pot roast dinner with potatoes, carrots, onions, beef and the broth for 4.xx. roast here are not on sale has not been on sale forever and a day. a roast here runs 3.99 lb, potatoes are on sale 2.99 5 lb bag, carrots 1.99 1 lb bag and onions 2.69 3 lb bag comes to

11.66
1.04
-----
12.70
frozen dinners
under 10.00
Yes I will have extra potatoes and onions, but thats about it and it will not add up to much either . Plus I have never seen a 1lb roast here. wont even know how big it would be,but I wouldn't think it could be that big tho. plus add in the fact you will have to cook the roast for a few hours, the ready made meal is already cooked . P.s Our electric company just did an increase of 3% .
It's crazy and looks as if it's not getting any better any time soon. this has got to end soon or people will not be able to afford to fed their families.

I was going to buy a stalk of Celery last night until I saw that it was $2.99 each.
It didn't even look nice.

I walked away and I will check another store.

I agree, I have been upset at how my favorite supermarket's prices have been soaring. So I have had to be as creative as all you girls. I have been picking things up on sale at CVS, Walgreens, Target, Walmart, little fruit stores, just any store I happen to be in, I pick up a few low priced items. I don't make "special" trips because of the gas, but if I am nearby I check into the sales. So it is now "a little here" and "a little there" just to even out the rising prices. I just try to stock up on items I see are really good loss leaders.

Do check White Hen, 7-11, and gas station mini-marts for milk. Ours carry gallons as a loss-leader at $2.99 STILL. They do so much volume in milk sales that it is always fresh and good.

Living on SS doesn't help matters any either.
We shop on Kroger's Sr. Cit. day to get 10% off and we use coupons and try to buy most things on sale.
We charge our groceries on our Kroger credit card and every time we charge $100 worth of groceries, we get .15c off a gallon of gas. Kroger sends us some very good coupons and also checks to spend in the store. It's different each time, anywhere from 20 - 40 dollars. All of this and their $4 prescriptions has gotten us by okay until now when everything has gone sky high. My favorite thing now is the miniature boxes of cereal!!!

What a great idea! I would have never thought of that! I know the turkey has to be so much healthier since there is absolutely no grease when I get done frying it, and on sale it's only $1 a pound as opposed to the "cheap ground beef" which is running $2.59-$2.99 a pound here. I have almost switched to cooking with all ground turkey for those meals where I would have normally used ground beef.

I really need to break out my recipe books or look up some recipes online, because right now with coupons I am getting lots of pasta totally free and Ragu for only .69 a jar, tomato paste for .09 a can and we are doing spaghetti once a week, but I am stocked up on rotini, penn pasta, elbows and no ideas of anything to do with it. So I really need to come up with some things to make. I guess I could do a turkey casserole, lasagne with ground turkey ?,

Personally, I just can't get over the smell of ground turkey.....it fills the house and just makes me nauseous. My guys will eat it, but I just can't cook it.

I've had that happen before. Now I buy only the ground white turkey. It seems to be better.

I was reading in the a book by the Ultimate Cheapskate that he tries not to buy anything for more than $1 per/lb. I'm going to try that this week. You have to see what you can get and then build your menus around that.

I also agree with the poster that said try different places. Our minimarts around here always have milk as a loss leader, usually $2.99 a gallon. We also have a bakery outlet. You can still get bread for less than $1 a loaf, even whole wheat. When I was at the dollar store the other day I noticed they had the big 2lb bags of frozen shredded hashbrowns for $1. I think we just have to get more clever I guess. We have Gocery Outlet here and you can find some really good deals there sometimes, especially on the healthy stuff. For me it's just a matter of remembering to go to these different places.

Someone mentioned pop. . .ugh! It's getting crazy expensive. I switched myself and my kiddos to lemonade and flavored ice tea. They haven't complained yet. Also, I keep a big cup from the local minimart for when I absolutely must have some Diet Coke. It's only 75cents to refill it.

There is a Walgreens coupon on their website for $5 off $20 today and tomorrow. They do these fairly often.

They had ice cream on sale for $1.99, so effectively I paid $1.50/ea. They are regularly $2.99. They had butter BOGO, regularly priced at $3.99.... so the BOGO made it $2/ea, and my coupon made it $1.50. At the grocery store it's about $2.79 right now.

One thing I did today was shopped around. It really pays to do that! The exact same spices that cost $2.89/ea at Super WalMart were $.88/each at our regular grocery store. SWM had grapes for $.98, while the grocery store had them for $1.89!

OTOH, the grocery store has boneless skinless chicken breasts for $1.98, while SWM had them for $4.29!

Had I just shopped at one place or the other I'd have paid far, far more than I did.

ETA: Walgreens has Pringles 10/$10. There is a $3 off your next Walgreens purchase certificate that you get if you buy ten Pringles products. Use a $5 off $20 coupon and in the end that really makes your Pringles $.40/can.

Every little bit helps!

We don't eat a lot of chips, but it is nice to have them as a snack at the end of the week when the plums, grapes, and other fresh fruits have been eaten and I haven't gotten back to the store yet!

I'm in the Boston area myself and haven't heard that particular pronunciation gaffe. Learn something new every day.

Voila is pronounced 'Walaw'. Maybe that's it?

LHEA = Linnybop Has Enormous Aptitude

Back to ground turkey... Maybe post on the Let's Get Cooking Board? I personally really like the turkey meatloaf with Stovetop Stuffing (in the place of bread crumbs) in the recipe. When I make meatballs, I mix in the powdered beef bullion, garlic, onion powder, and black pepper before forming the balls.

Yeah, I got that, Cuthie. Just to beat a dead horse, according to the dictionary (and all those years of French class ), voila is pronouced vwah-lah; Fr. vwa-la. Pronounced walaw is quite similar to pronouncing nuclear as nucular, but who would do that?

Here's an upside on the high cost of groceries....I'm finding that the regular items are now priced similarly to organic, so I'm going to use this as an opportunity to buy more organic items. For example, Stop-n-Shop carries Nature's Promise organic items.....I bought organic canned kidney and black beans of those instead of my regular brand for about the same price.

I noticed that some of the unit pricing labels have not yet reflected that the size of the products have gone down on some items....grrr....

I hate turkey anyway(always get a steak for Thanksgiving) but the ground turkey smell makes me sick and my hubby won't eat ground beef so I am always cooking turkey. My son will eat it but daughter refuses. I am going to have to try the beef boullion to mix it up a little.

Well gosh Nancy, I could totally live happily ever after if I had MY suggested WALAW. One of the best moments of my life was when we did our official Make-A-Wish pose with Tim, and I was next to him, and he said, "Come on guys let's get closer for this next shot." And he totally squeezed me for the next shot. OMG....It is so funny, because DH is still pissed over that photo. Tim and I were definitely having a moment. or so I lead myself to believe. I don't know how to post pics, but if anyone would like a photo of our family w/ my Tim, I would be happy to send one. Just send your addy to koppenhavers@cox.net. Nancy, I still don't think you have receieved one.

We've been getting a box of food from Angelfood Ministries every month to help stretch our dollars. (Paid for, not charity - its like a huge buying club of sorts but the food is distributed through churches). Otherwise its just pretty ouchy - if we hadn't prepaid for a box of organic veggies/fruit through our local Community Sponsered Agriculture farm I don't know how I'd be getting that much produce with the prices so high.

Although prices have been climbing for months by using less of things and being especially mindful of waste we have been doing okay.
I go to farm stands a lot and buy things on sale and of course coupons are a real blessing for the things I can use them on.
Using ingenuity to make meals is making us more creative and we are having some great stuff.
Now I realize that we are two adults and homes with children it's harder. When my son was a teenager we went through so much food between him and his friends I would sometimes wonder if termites were invading the fridge.

My intention wasn't to be tough on you. It was my feeble attempt at trying to steer things back to the topic... Sorry!

Red face

Some things I noticed is that the coupon inserts are painfully thin, also they are putting alot of target coupons in the sunday inserts and finally alot of the items the stores post as sale items are always out of stock, I truly have noticed a big difference. Then you try to get rainchecks and they give you such a hard time. Then you use the rainchecks and they get upset. TImes are bad. Peace. Catherine

I had a raincheck for a local store here, Farm Fresh. It was for a 5lb. bag of russet potatoes for .99 (reg. price was $3.99). When I went to use it, the cashier asked, "Since the first bag is free, would you like to get the second bag for
.99?" I was bewildered. While I have been shopping there for years and years, I never knew that was their raincheck policy. If they are out of an item, you will get it free when you use your raincheck. And you have the option to buy one more at the sale price. So I ended up getting 10lbs. of potatoes for .99. Of course, my 15 yr. old son had to make fun of me-"Mom, you really get too excited about your sales and coupons." Umm yea, he is the one -from now on, I'll just call him Mr. Baseball. Every time we go to buy new jeans, he drops two inches in his waistline, and gains those two inches on his length. He is now a 28 W/34 L-not very easy to find. He should not be complaining about potatoes-a 5lb. bag is pretty much considered a single serving around here!

We have been trying to garden more. We just planted some cool weather veggies and are hoping to do more soon. We planted brussel sprouts and broccoli and and are looking to put in various greens or maybe swiss chard. I wanted to try salad greens possibly too. Does anyone else have suggestions for cool weather crops?

It seems as though I spend at least $100 everytime I step in the store now. The prices are ridiculous. My favorite light cream for my coffee is $1.99 for a pint. I seem to remember that my mother would stretch milk by mixing regular milk with prepared powdered milk. I also remember my mother stretching the ground beef by adding bread crumbs or some brand of "meat stretcher". I am going to try this out, to see if I can stretch the almighty shrinking dollar.

My mom used to do those things too. I'm not much of a milk drinker, but my kids could eat cereal all day long! Last week I bought my first ever box of powdered milk. LOL! I was going to try to mix it in with the regular. . .maybe 1:4 and see if anybody notices.

I've been trying to watch waste lately too. I throw away A LOT of food. I'm trying to be more mindful of that. . . .remembering to throw something in the freezer if it turns out I'm not going to use it when I thought I would. And I've declared Saturday as Garbage Soup Day. Basically, any leftovers get thrown into my wacky version of minestrone. I usually add spaghetti sauce as my base, but this week I was out and just used ketchup. It still turned out good. . .my kids chowed it down. It was gone by Sunday.

My mom used powdered milk too. We never drank it, but she used it in recipes all the time. I can't stand to drink that stuff and I can't stand to smell it either, but I could never tell a difference in recipes. HTH.

I bet it was TVP (Textured Vegetable Protein). I use it but not because it's cheaper. I use to to stretch the meat so we're eating less hamburger. I use it mainly in chili, but spaghetti sauce and similar things when I think about it. My kids don't have a clue. It takes on the flavor of what it's cooked with and just appears to be crumbled hamburger. In our store it's in the sugar/flour isle near the fancy flours and gluten-free stuff.
