Unhappy Hear of a store shutting it's doors a bank closeing or a big lay-off post it here.

Unfortunately we are seeing a lot of theese lately, and I think it would be a good idea to have a list for theese places.

I heard about Great Dane in Terre Haute, Indiana laying-off a little over 100 people. They make semi trailers.

My mom works for Mervyns in Las Vegas. They are in bankruptcy and if they don't find a buyer in the next week, they will have to liquidate. My mom says it will be about three months before they close. Very sad as my mom has worked there FOREVER and is 61,,,,,she probaby won't find a new job ~ who wants to hire "older" workers??!!!

I couldn't answer the poll. I think it has a lot to do with who we elect as president.

I know that my husbands company (tech) will be laying off more people in the next 3 years. They bought another company and need to *scale down*. We have been in "layoff hell" for the last 6 years with them. I just hope DH can keep his job. REALLY good people are getting laid off I know their CEO said that if Obama is elected, there will be more layoffs than usual if he puts into place the tax rules on corporations he talks about. The company would lose a lot more money in taxes that would otherwise be paychecks for employees. Many people just don't understand the tax ramifications and that they could lose their jobs.

Mervyns closed down it's store here a few years ago and it's spot in the mall is still empty.

ALCOA is closing its potline facility in Rockdale, TX leaving over 500 people without a job by Dec. 1, 2008. Uncertainty about energy costs and the soft metals market worldwide has been cited as the cause.

Nonprofits are deeply in trouble.

Not related to nonprofits but the price of copper has dropped $1 a pound in the past 2 weeks (we live in copper mining country).

The casino that I work at has just done a round of lay offs that resulted in 10% reduction in staff = 50 workers. I am not sure they are done yet. 10 other properties in town have laid off much larger numbers.

I posted this one on another thread but I'll post it here in case someone didn't see it.

Ashley Furniture in our area (and I also heard one in Georgia too) has closed up. Just one day they weren't open and had a sign on the door. People have furniture they've already paid for and some have been waiting since May to get it.

Linens N Things is going into liquidation - so I think its safe to say they're ALL closing. Liquidation sales could start as soon as this week or so the news said.

Yes it is sad. I live in NW Tucson and the Shoe Pavilion by me is closing. They had some great sales, but nothing that fit me. I heard about LNT also, haven't heard about ours closing yet. And YET they are buidling a new mall near me and most of the stores are set to open this month and next month. Go Figure.

Circuit City plans to close about 62 underperforming company-owned stores in its international segment in Canada. This division also plans to exit some product lines to align its merchandise offerings with demand.

Circuit City also plans to close the domestic segment operation that was being held for sale and had already been reported as discontinued.

By the end of February, Circuit City plans to close 7 U.S. superstores that generated $71 million in revenue during the 12 months ended Dec. 31. The company plans to close another superstore this month before opening a replacement store during the first quarter of fiscal 2008.

The retailer also is shutting down a Louisville, Kentucky, distribution center used mainly for store fixtures and signs.

Our big dog store already closed. I guess they are going to internet only as I was told in the store. I guess my Shoe Pavillion isn't the only one closing then.

Actually there are many places that want to hire "older" workers. They tend to be more loyal employees, take less days off (no little ones at home) and do an overall fantastic job.

I think a lot of the "bad news" is media hype. Sure, there are places closing, but, where I live we have lots of new stores going up. The only store that I have seen closing is Linens' n Things, and quite frankly, with their prices, I'm surprised they lasted this long

A friend's husband works for Comcast Cable co. here in NJ and they just laid off a bunch of people, VERY unexpectantly. He has worked there for over 10 years producing commercials and they called everyone to a meeting and told them Dec. 19th is their last day. They were in total shock, never thought it would happen to him.

DH's company has been laying off people for months, a little here and a little there. He works for Tilcon, an East Coast company. They started with management and have been working down the line to the workers, we are pretty sure they won't work through the winter this year and that will be the first time in a LONG time they don't. We'll be livin' on that stockpile!

A very popular restaurant, Flat Rock Grille, abruptly closed its doors today (well, probably yesterday) in our area. A friend of my son worked there and didn't know it was closed till he went to work.
There was a short note about it in our newspaper this morning.
It stated the economy as the reason for the closing.

Both LNT in my area have HUGE Store Closing signs hung across the front of the store (directly below their name). I also received an email telling me that everything in my local stores was 30% off.

Value City department Stores will now all close according to an article my newspaper today.
They filed chapter 11 on Oct 27.
They have closed closed 75 across the US since Dec and subleased some areas to Burlington Coat but will now liquidate all assets and close the remaining 65 stores. (including the one nearest my area)
A final closing date was not available in the article I read.
Reason given was a decline in consumer spending and a tight credit market.

DH told me this morning that Value City and Mervyns were closing all their stores. I'm sure there will be more before the credit crunch is over.

Circuit City filed for bankruptcy protection.
Quote:
It said it decided to file for bankruptcy protection because it was facing pressure from vendors who threatened to withhold products during the holiday season.
Quote:
Circuit City also said it would cut 700 more jobs, after announcing a week ago that it would close 20 percent of its stores and lay off thousands of workers.
