Question W W Y D ? possible bottle cap cancer phone card hoax?

I volunteer at a local food pantry, I was talking to this fellow volunteer and she was telling me she was collecting plastic bottle caps for phone cards for cancer victims. Anyway I have been looking online for something about this program and all I run into is every program like this is a hoax. She is an older lady and like me we both like to help people and try to do good. Which brings me to this I had been collecting Mountain Dew caps for my sister for a promotion, anyway she was not able to use them. The promotion for the M. D. is now expired so they are no longer good for that. The way the woman told me the promotion works, is each bottle cap equals 1 minute phone card time.

Every site I goto from searches I have done on yahoo about this type of program winds up being a hoax.

Do I just give the caps to her and say nothing or should i give them to her and tell her I think it may be a hoax? I really don't want to break her heart she is a good woman and if she or I would find out it is a hoax it would devestate her.

Sorry so long I just do not know what to do.

Thank You all for reading and your advice.

I don't know if it is true or not but some lady that I work with is telling everyone that she is collecting bottle caps with words on them and they are worth 1 minute of radiation for chemo patients without insurance.

It sounds like a scam of some sort or someone just trying to be funny and seeing how far people will take it.

I would give her the bottle caps and tell her that I researched it, and found it to most-likely be a hoax. You won't be out anything since the MD promotion ended and you'll let her know what you think so that she can then research if she wanted.

I agree what would it hurt to give them to her? Maybe she knows something others don't. Even if she is wrong she is getting a really good feeling from doing it.

It may have been true at one point -- that's probably gentler than outright calling it a hoax. I'm pretty sure it is a hoax, though.

Bottle Caps for Cancer......

Dear all,

Just a note to let you know I am investigating the possibility of establishing a nation wide recycling program for the plastic bottle caps whereby the proceeds would be donated to cancer research. I have recently returned to NJ after spending 10 years in Barcelona, to support and care for my Mom during her continuing battle with Breast Cancer. As it turns out, recycling bottle caps is somewhat of a complicated issue, although where there's a will, there's a way. It is encouraging to hear there are so many people out there, with the interest and belief that these little caps are worth taking the time to recycle.......every little bit helps from an environmental standpoint. And furthermore if the proceeds could also serve a dual purpose and contribute towards a cure for this dreadful disease that inevitably touches us all, that would make it even more worthwhile.

This obviously will not happen overnight, but for anyone out there interesed in getting involved in such a project, do feel free to drop me an email with your contact information. My time right now is somewhat limited, being dedicated to the care taking of Diane, but as the project progresses, the involvement at the individual, community, and state levels nationwide will determine the viability and success of such a program.

Thank you for reading this email, and your interest in this topic.
Best wishes to all,
Christine Zois

According to snopes.com this is a hoax. Listed below is the link to that page. Perhaps you can print it out and explain to your friend that, although what she has been doing is a noble and well-meaning gesture, there is no place for these caps to be donated. It is hard to work on something for long and hard and have it turn out this way, I understand. But, better to let her know than to have her continue and also possibly to pass on this erroneous information to other well-meaning souls.
