Moving...

from Boise Idaho to Alice Springs Australia!! We will be there 6 months to a year. We're leaving some time in January. Which brings me to my question. We are keeping our house, How much of the house should I pack up? My DH's company is paying for our living arrangments there, we don't need to take furniture, just personal belongings. We are paying someone to check in on the house once a week. I was thinking of going room by room and packing as if I'm moving out of the house, so that in the year we're gone I'm not going to be thinking of that thing I left behind. I planned on leaving furniture and wall decor where they are and pack pretty much everything else. Is that too much? Would you just do a very through cleaning and pack what you're taking? I stress easy and if I stay busy, I don't think about things like being away from family and friends for a year, or getting my toddlers to control themselves for an 18 hour flight, or how incredibly scarry moving to a totally different country really is.

I wanna go!!!!!!!!!!

I would make sure any valuables are secure. Things like put a back up disk of your family photos and up to date important papers in the safe deposit vault or store any heirlooms with some one you trust etc. I would then pack the bare minimum (take some homesick preventers though). anything you need you can buy there or have family ship to you later. When I travel I love to take very little then have fun buying whatever clothes or other things I need there. Maybe go through your house and declutter and have a yard sale to make extra money so you can spend more freely when you get there, and have more room for all the cool stuff you will get while you are there. Teach yourself about opals and buy a really nice one for me.

Wow! How exciting....How scary!

I haven't a clue about what you need to do as far as packing.

I just think that it's awesome that you and your family are getting this opportunity.

Personally, I would pack everything up and put it in storage. Never know when a break-in might happen, and let my realtor friend know it will be vacant, you never know when some one needs a short term rental, (1 - 2 months) to make some money. I rather the place used, then vacant.

Theresa, There is a company that started right here in Boise (yup, I'm here too!) and she (the owner) handpicks people to move in to your house, and they have to have nice furniture, and they pay a really cheap price in rent, she does it for most of the $$$$ homes here, that are waiting to sell, they have to keep up the yard and everything, but I would definately look into renting it out, even at a really low price to some one you could definatly trust, just so it doesn't sit empty. I do know someone who just moved here after a divorce and she's living with her sister right now, but looking to rent a home... Let me know if you need help! Good luck, and HOW FUN! I would love to miss out on the cold of Boise!
