Chantix to stop smoking, anyone tried it?

My son has been smoking for a few years (started in the navy). He has been trying to quit without luck. He got an RX for chantix from his dr, and after 3 days, didnt have any cravings for any cigs. He decided after 6 days to have a cig, he said it was so gross, he never wants one again. He said the chantix works great. He told me he had a couple cigs on day 1 and 2 of the meds, but day 3, no more. Anyway, just wondering if anyone else has tried it, and when you stopped the chantix, did you get your cravings for cigs back? Tell me your story. My son is so excited that this is working, but I have heard some people go back to smoking when they stop, and other people never want a cig again.

I have heard good stories about it more than bad stories, and I tell him all the good ones. I dont dare tell him about the bad ones. But, for my own curiosity, I want to hear them all.

Beth

I don't have a story for you, but I'm interested in hearing what others have to say. I've been taking Chantix for a week and so far haven't had a cigarette. Unfortunately for me, I am still craving them terribly. I've come really, really close to buying a pack, but so far I've been able to resist the temptation. I'm hoping to hear a lot of stories about how MUCH EASIER it gets after a couple of weeks!!!

My father inlaw used this product 2 years ago...he is a very heavy smoker, chain smoker. When he started using Chantix he got down to one cig a day....he could not even finish the cig most of the time. But he had to have that one cig. He stayed smoking just that 1/2 cig for months. Then slowly he just started smoking more and more. He is back to chain smoking. I believe if he would of not smoked that 1/2cig a day he would of not started smoking again. He try chantix again about 6 months ago....did not do very well....cut down his smoking but not like the first time.

I quit smoking 5 years ago....cold turkey...i was a heavy smoker. I just told myself it was going to be the hardest thing I ever do, but each day would be easier. I also read that after 24-72 hours your body your body is cleaned of the nictone(craving). I knew it was all a head game after that......I think that is what help me the most.....Cravings will still come to me but they are brief and far between now.
Good luck to your son......keep us posted.

My dh tried it and was down to 3-4 smokes a day. He gave up the Chantix and went right back to smoking. It's expensive too! $9x.xx a box with insurance! My friend also tried it and quit completely for months. Her main complaint was CRAZY vivid dreams. Then when she quit Chantix, she went right back to smoking. My concern with the Chantix is the high instance of suicidal thoughts/suicide. This was on the news a few months back.

Let me start by saying you HAVE to have a true desire to stop smoking or NO smoking aid will help you stop.
That being said I consider Chantix as my saving grace. I was a VERY heavy chain smoker and had been for many years. I really enjoyed my cigarettes but they were slowly killing me (literally). I coughed horribly day and night. The dr. said she could barely hear air going into my lungs when I took a deep breath as she had the stethascope (sp) to my chest. I had tried every other smoking aid I ever heard of including hypnosis but none came close to helping.
It took the Chantix much longer to work for me than it was supposed to but I kept taking it and slowly decreasing the number of cigarettes per day. I was finally down to one per day, usually in the evening. One evening I got busy and accidently forgot my cigarette. I didn't think about it till the next day but that was the end of my smoking. But I continued on the Chantix for a couple more months just for safety. I can honestly say I have not lite a cigarette since the one before the forgotten one. But I can also honestly say the desire creeps back frequently. Chantix or not you DO still have to exercise some self control. I've been told by former smokers that the desire NEVER completely leaves you.
So, yes, I truely believe in Chantix. But if a person doesn't have a true desire to quit NOTHING can help. And you do have to resist the desires, but Chantix makes it MUCH easier to resist.
Oh, and yes, the stupid dreams are aside affect of it. Not scary dreams, just stupid ones.

And by the way my last cigarette was May 24, 2007 If I can quit anyone can.

Good luck to all who are trying to quit. You can IF you REALLY want to.

ETA: Yes, Chantix isn't cheap but it doesn't cost any more per month than a carton of cigarettes per week, probably less.
