My 5 month old kitten died accidentally, please read

My 5 month old kitten died accidentally. I am hoping this post keeps other kittens from dying too. I was doing laundry and she jumped up on the washer to watch. I let her watch then pushed her down. She ran out of the room and went to play. After that load washed, I put it in the dryer. My clothes were drying and after about 20 or 30 min, I went to check on them. I looked into the dryer and there was my kitten. I grabbed her and screamed my head off. I couldnt stop screaming. My son was home and we rushed her to the vet, but it was to late. I dont know at what point she died. I dont know if the heat or the tossing around killed her. I never saw her get in there. I am so sad, and all I can do is picture her lifeless body in my head.

When I took her to the vet, they said this is NOT uncommon. They had a kitten in last month that the same thing happened to. Please, check your dryers before you turn them on. Check under your recliner before you recline it, watch out for that little kitten that is so curious. I hope this post helps save the life of more kittens from this tragic death.

Beth

I'm so, so sorry for your loss, especially the shocking way that it all came about.

Don't blame yourself, however. There was even a mom that called in to the Oprah Show and said that the same thing had happened to her. (It was the show about the mom who accidentally left her 2yo in the car). Hopefully, by sharing your story, you will prevent the same accident from happening to others.

So it sounds like she actually got into the washer, and then was transferred to the dryer when you moved the clothes. I don't see how a kitten could get the door to a dryer open, but since she was already curious about the washer a kitten could easily slip into a top opening washer.

I'm so sorry - that must have been horrifying for you to discover. Hugs to you, and please don't beat yourself up. It was an accident.

My cat frequently hops into the dryer just as my back is turned when I go to get more laundry from the washer. He is a big black cat so he is easily seen, but I can totally understand not seeing a kitten hop in. They are playful and love jumping into boxes and shopping bags and any small place.

It is a terrible accident, I am very sorry.

Oh, I'm so sorry this happened. The exact same thing happened to a friend of mine with her cat years ago. It's so sad.

she was definately not in the washer. I was playing with her after I put the clothes in the washer. She was sitting on the washer watching me load it, and I pushed her off just before I closed it. I am positive it wasnt the washer. When I did find her in the dryer, she was still limp, like she could have still been alive. I even considered giving her mouth to mouth.

Thank you for the warning, we was adopted by a stray kitten not long ago and he's a curious little creature.

Cats can sneak into places really easily. I got into the habit of throwing wet clothes into the dryer, hard, because my boy cat's curious, but not very smart, and that tended to flush him out of the dryer if he'd wandered in. I'm so sorry you lost your kitten. but I can see how that would happen. Some of the traits that make cats so fun also put them in danger.

I am so sorry this happened to you. I had a cat when I was teenager that was a RUNT and he always did things like that. I truly believe he actually lived out all of his 9 lives. He was so small he fit in my hand. He did this same thing when Mom and I were folding laundry one night. About 5 minutes after we started dryer we couldn't find him so we ran to check and sure enough as soon as we opened the dryer door out he came. He shook his head and ran off like nothing happened. He also got shut in the refrigerator. Luckily my Dad was still thirsty and ran back for another drink. He was also stepped on, slammed shut in door and fell in swimming pool(and had to be rescued by pool net). Kitty owners beware and be careful. They are curious creatures and will get into all kinds of trouble. Again, I am sorry this happened to you but Thanks for posting so others can be aware.

I had an even worse experience with a kitten. We got a siamese kitten from a breeder when we were first married. We put it in the basement overnight, because it seemed to be not quite litter trained. It climbed into the furnace to be near the pilot light where it was warm. The furnace came on and the kitten
was cremated. It was awful. I stood there at the top of the steps calling the kitten, and it did not come.
My husband went down and discovered what had happened. It was just awful. Who would have ever thought that something like that would happen.

Poor kitty, I can imagine how you feel.
I once had a kitten sneak out the door while I was leaving for work and as I was pulling out the driveway the kitten sprung out of nowhere and attacked my car tire trying to stop the car I guess.I did not know it had gotten out.
I also bought a Siamese kitten one time and the 2nd day I had it,the kitten was running and dashing around the room and wasn't looking where it was running and it accidentally banged its head into the coffee table leg.It got a severe concussion and died .

Wow, thats horrible. I have had cats run into things and even had one fall from my upstairs gameroom and hit the stairway railing on the way down, and I rushed her to the vet when she was a kittten, and she is 6 yrs old now, and doing fine. Never thought she coulda died from that.

The same thing happened to our cat when we were younger. My brother put clothes in the dryer and the cat must have been in there already. We heard thumping but our dryer was always off balance so it didn't faze us. It was so very sad.

I'm sorry for your loss.

My kitten was in my dryer and I heard this thump thump and usually I just let the machine work it out but I went to open the door and out she shot.
Honestly I do not know what I would have done if I had not stopped the dryer.
My heart aches for you and your family.
I am so sorry to hear this. I think that your story is a wake up call to all of us "cat people".
Take care

I did hear thumping around, and assumed it was something the kids left in their pocket. I hear it all the time, once there was a shoe in the dryer. I cant stop thinking about how long did she survive. How long was your kitten in there before you opened the door?

I'm so very sorry for your loss!

One of our cats did that when I was a kid, luckily my mom heard the bumping sound and opened the door immediately. After that we never closed the door without checking first. They just love crawling in dark places, particularly warm ones.
