Question Rollover Accidents

My drive home from work is in the wee hours of the morning on a winding mountain road. Last Sunday morning I was just starting the climb when I noticed headlights in the oncoming lanes that were on a car obviously rolling over and over. As I watched the vehicle went off the road, and down the embankment. I called 911 and police and fire were there in less than 6 minutes. Even so the the two men in the truck were DOA.

My SO and I were discussing the fact that it seems that we hear about so many roll over accidents in our area. I was wondering if it was because there are so many long stretches of highway between cities and towns or if it was some other factor. But I don't recall hearing about so many rollovers until recent years.
I spoke with a friend who is a police officer and asked what his take on it was. He said he believed a lot of people are doing several things besides driving and that when their attention is diverted away from the road that the car drifts to the side of the highway and when the person realizes there is a problem they overcorrect. And given that todays cars are lighter and highly responsive coupled with high speeds the overcorrection sends the car into a roll. But that was his personal opinion, not based on any statistics.

So I am wondering do you hear of many rollovers in your area and if so what do you think is the cause?

Oh and Please wear seatbelts.

I'm so sorry that happened and that you were a first witness, cashchik. How devestating!
I know when we've had rollovers, more likely than not, an SUV is involved, but I was not aware that there was an increase in the number of rollovers.....haven't really been paying attention. For sure, cell phone talking and texting is a huge distraction.....you can almost tell by the way they're driving when people are doing that instead of paying attention to the road....

I don't know,we saw the strangest accident close to our house last week.Keep in mind the speed limit on our street is 35 mph. There was a car sitting on a tall guard rail over half way on top of it ,facing the opposite direction of traffic. The guard rail was in front of a church and the direction the car was made it look like he had come from out of the woods. I have never seen anything so strange in my life. How on earth the car got into that position is beyond me but the driver was OK.

I've notice it too.Your friend is right about the roll overs....People are not paying attention anymore..They freak out when they drift off the road & jerk the wheel trying to get the car back onto the road that's what cause them to lose control of the vehicle & flip..

My father who taught me how to drive ---always told me NEVER jerk the wheel if you drift off the road..Keep a firm grip on the wheel ...Let off the gas immediately allow the car to slow down to a safe speed then slowly bring the car back onto the road... I actually went off the road before going 65 mph & the advice he gaved me work.

We had a rollover accident in my town only recently... Seems the man was less than 1 mile from his home and he hit a pole and the truck rolled over numerous times. He was sea belted in, but died anyway

SUV's can be prone to roll over crashes because they are tall and not necessarily wide.

My 17yr old DD was driving to school April 14 of this year and was in a roll over crash. She was driving a small SUV (Suzuki Grand Vitara). She made a left hand turn following another car on a yellow light. A car came out of a driveway about 20 feet before the intersection and the driver decided to accelerate to make the light instead of stopping. My daughter was considered at fault although the officer said she really shouldn't have been. Her car came to rest upside down on the other side of the road facing the wrong way. She rolled over 3x according to witnesses. Luckily her car had front & side airbags. They saved her life. She came out of the crash without a scratch but was in shock for the rest of the day. The other car (Ford Explorer) had a very small dent in the front bumper. My daughters car was totalled. DH and I aged 10 years that morning!!

We witnessed an SUV rollover. A van was pulling out of our street while a SUV was pulling out of the gas station and neither had a signal on so they tapped each others bumpers. It was a surreal experience because the SUV just slowly rolled over on its roof. The vehicles were maybe going 10 mph.

We were told at the time it had to do with the center of gravity being higher in the SUV.

I think a lot of people go too fast around bends and corners and don't realize until it's too late. Some overcorrect maybe that causes some of the accidents.

I read the paper everyday and don't recall seeing an accident like this around here for a very long time.
