Question Restless leg syndrome - anybody have it

I have had it for years, but very sporadically.

I had an episode last night and had forgotten how awful it can really be

I know there are medications out there for RLS, but -- truthfully -- i take so many medications already that I really don't want to add another to my list.

Usually, if I take an aspirin and soak in a very hot bath for about 30 minutes (I have had to do this at 3:00 in the morning!) it helps some.

I would love to know if anyone else suffers from RLS and what you do to ease your symptoms.

I have it too. I've had it for as long as I can remember. I take 2 Naproxen Sodium (Aleve). I've even resorted to having my DH sit on my legs. That makes them feel somewhat better. I guess from the pressure or something. I'm been known to just sit and cry with them.

I have an appointment with the doc the 27th and this is one thing on my list. I just can't deal with it anymore.

I have it sporadically also. I tried the free sample last year of Natures Inventory "Night Time Leg Calm" It does help.

I have had it before too. One time it kept occuring after a surgery. I was told it was an imbalance-maybe potassium? Anyway, I was told to eat a banana before bed and to take magnesium supplements.

This is going to sound really odd but in Dr. Gott's column in the paper he suggested putting a bar of soap in ur bed, like in a sock or whatever but under the sheets. I don't have it but it did help my mother and father when they tried it. Here is one article about it:
There is now a prescription drug (Requip) to treat RLS (restless leg syndrome). The only problem is that some people fall asleep during the day. This could be risky if they are behind the wheel. As far as we can tell, there are no side effects to putting soap under the bottom sheet.

Q. Several months ago I went to my neurologist for my yearly physical and told him about a problem I had with my legs "jumping" at night and waking me up. He gave me the technical name for it and wrote me a prescription for Mirapex. I then told him I had read in your column about putting a bar of soap in the bed, so he told me to try the soap and fill the prescription if it didn't work. I still have the unfilled prescription sitting on my bathroom vanity. When we went on a trip to Yellowstone, I took my soap along and slept fine every night we were gone.

A. This home remedy mystifies us, but we have heard from many readers like you. The risk of unwrapping a fresh bar of soap and putting it under the bottom sheet where the legs will be is almost zero. The cost is far less than a prescription. Positive responses from other readers experimenting with Ivory soap remedy:

“A while back I wrote to complain that the bar of soap under the bottom sheet quit working for my restless legs. (It was great at first.) Then I got to thinking, it worked before, so why not now? That bar of soap had been there for six months, so I replaced it. The result: no more restless legs. A few times that I had symptoms, I put my feet on the soap and the sensations went away in about two minutes.

“My husband was having severe leg cramps at night. Without telling him, I placed a soap bar under his sheets for two nights before he noticed. It worked! He’s had no more cramps. We still can't believe it! “

“I have had severe leg cramps for years. When I read about putting a bar of soap in bed, I got a bar of Ivory and put it under the bottom sheet near my legs. It’s been a month since I did that, and I have not had one leg cramp.

Ok...maybe I'm not getting this, but where do you put the bar of soap so that you don't feel it all night long??

I have been having leg cramps & tried putting a little chip of Ivory in the top of my socks, my legs still get tired, but no more cramps in my legs. I put the Ivory in every morning when I dress.

DD has it very bad. I'm no expert, but, some of the replies on here sound more like leg cramps to me than actual RLS. RLS can effect not only the legs, but, the whole body even. DD has it everywhere. Before we knew what it was she called it "UCUTM" UnControllable Urge To Move" We would be in the car, and she would just start beating on her legs, and screaming.

She constantly is "popping/rolling" her shoulders , and rotating her hands and feet. It keeps her up at night. Originally, they put her on Lexapro, an anti-anxiety drug, telling us that this was her body's way of working out it's frustrations. Um, that wasn't what it was. Then, we got some muscle relaxers.......no help there, either. Finally, we went to a neurologist and had loads of blood tests (to rule out other things) and the doctor has RLS as well, so is very familiar with it.

We finally got an Rx for Requip, and it's been very very helpful. She takes a very small amount about an hour before bed, and it has helped immensely.

DD tells me it feels like she just HAS to move her body.

KellyJef, I would suggest requesting a neurology consult and asking a neurologist. There is no real test for RLS, they just rule out other stuff. Also, it runs in families.

ETA: here is a web site I found about RLS http://www.rls.org/Page.aspx?pid=471
