UPDATED!!! I was snuggling Lou, my Beagle, last night while watching a movie. He was so relaxed I decided to take a peek into his mouth and check his teeth out, something he hates me doing. I looked and OMG! He has a cavity, possibly 2. One looks kind of bad - the tooth is decayed at the bottom and the gum area is a brighter red than the rest of his gums. And the other area looks like the tooth is missing a small bit at the top. The worse one is on the bottom - the other one is on the top. My other Beagle, Miss Daisy, has a dental cleaning at the end of the month, but I never thought to make one for Lou. Poor baby! I plan on calling the vet tomorrow to see what I need to do. Anyone have experience with something like this? Would it constitute an emergency dental visit? Or would they just have me schedule something for him? This is not on the $$ agenda, but I think the area is irritating him, as every once in a while he will scratch that area of his mouth with his hind leg. I feel awful, not realizing that he had a cavity and wonder how long it has been there. He is still eating and stuff, so that is good. But I still know it has to be uncomfortable for him, at least.

Vets have to do everything from routine exams to dentistry. You should make an appointment with your vet as soon as possible. If the gum is that inflamed, your dog could be getting an abcess. The vet will probably remove the tooth.

I told DH tonight I was afraid that it was going to be abcessed, if it isn't already. I totally plan on calling the vet exactly when they open to try to get an appt. asap. Lou is my baby!! I hate the thought of me not being able to do anything about it until tomorrow.

I got him in today. Just like a regular doctor, I called when they opened up and got a 9:30am appt. She was barely able to get into his mouth (he really hates people messing with his mouth), but did see the questionable tooth. She was unable to tell if it really was a cavity, but said that he did have quite a bit of tartar & gingivitis on his teeth. She gave me, at my request, a pain medication to give him 2x a day, and antibiotics to start on Sunday. And Lou took our other Beagle's dental appt, which is scheduled for Wednesday the 29th (he took her appt and she will have her dental visit on Nov. 18th now). Normally our vet has dogs start antibiotics the day before their appt. but Lou will start on Sunday because of the tooth issue, to hopefully kill a bit of the bacteria before they start scraping his teeth. I am relieved. And am glad that I discovered his funky tooth. And am super glad that Daisy (our other Beagle) had an appt for next week that he could take, as right now it is about a month out for dental cleanings with our vet.

He had his dental surgery yesterday. Turns out he needed 2 teeth pulled. And the vet saved the teeth to show me.... EWWWW. All bloody, gross, and nasty. He was still under anesthesia when we brought him home. But I told them that I wanted to bring him home ASAP. (they let me pick him up at 2:30pm instead of 4pm). He whined a lot, and wouldn't eat. His mouth hurt and he was still out of it. Finally, he started eating. And now he is acting more like himself. Poor guy! ![]() I am wetting his dry food until tomorrow, to give his mouth a chance to heal a bit (he has stitches). I am so glad that I noticed his gross looking tooth. And was able to get him in soon. Next month, our other Beagle, Miss Daisy, gets her dental work. Lou (and Miss Daisy's head):
