| For moms of teenage girls
My dd (15) is having a terrible problem using tampons. She has no trouble getting them in, but is in tremendous pain when she removes it. We have tried many brands, absorbencies, leaving them in longer, leaving them in shorter, and nothing seems to work. I've done some research and suspect that she may have a problem that would involve a visit to the gynecologist. Anybody have any experience with this?

What type of pain does she have upon removing the tampon? Is it cramping pain? Does she have a very heavy flow or is is light? I had terrible problems with my periods being very heavy and every time I'd remove a tampon I'd get really strong, painful cramps which resulted in the passing of large clots. My doctor told me that removing the tampon was stimulating the cramping because there was so much in the uterus to be expelled. So if she has very heavy flow this could be what it is. Other than that, I have never had a problem with pain upon tampon removal. I think I trip to the gyno is in order. There could be all kinds of issues that can be easily taken care of. Plus, she's at the age where I think it would be a good idea to teach her about yearly exams and have her establish a relationship with a gyno. Wish my mother would've set me up with a gyno when I was a teen, would've made my problems later on a lot easier.

I actually think her problem has more to do with her anatomy. After a lot of online research today, I've discovered something called a "hymenal band" or "sepate hymen". It actually is an extra layer of skin. She has no trouble getting the tampon in because it is so thin. However, when she takes it out and it has expanded, that's where the pain comes in. The periods are perfectly normal, but this is a concern. I was wondering if anyone has had to take their DD to the gyne for a pelvic exam at a young age (15 is young to me). How did it go?

I started going to the gynocologist at age 15 due to menstrual problems. It went fine. Other than I was so nervous about it. But going and having the physical exam was no issue. Lisa

I think if she's in that much pain a trip to the GYN is definitely in order. If it's giving her that much pain I think you need to consult with a professional, rather than internet diagnose. The other alternative of course is pads. I have one DD that started using tampons right out of the gate, and the other that still doesn't want to. What my gyn told me is that the normal time to take a girl to the Dr is when they become sexually active or if they experience a problem.

I agree with the others The pain could be coming from lots of things. A trip to the dr will tell you what it is and save you lots of worry.

My guess would also be the hyman issue. I remember having the same problem too. There is a flap that goes across that means she is still a virgin. SHe can either be really careful when removing and try different positions, try taking it out in the shower, or skip them all together.

I would think it's probably a hymen issue as well. I know before I had sex, tampons caused pain when removing them. After I had sex, it didn't hurt anymore. I would take her to the doc in any case just to make sure it's nothing more serious

Goonie my younger dd 16 Caitlin got very sick 6 months ago from using them. She was getting dizzy spells and just not feeling well. The one mistake she did make and I think alot of teenagers make is that they keep them in too long. They think because their a tampon they have much better coverage... For me personally I never used one. However so many of my dd;s friends all use them they love them they say for swimming wearing jeans and pads not showing. However we took our dd to the doctors and her female doctor said I am againist the usage of tampoms and again said that girls were leaving them in for as much as 6 hours too long. So long story short for many health issues the risks right on the package she no longer uses them and has not had a problem. i sincerely hope all goes well for your dd. Peace... Catherine

Ditto me also in the hate those things category. My body also wants to expel them immediately and they are physically uncomfortable for me too, and I'm 38. Really painful actually everytime I wore one so I gave up. Please let us know what you find out from the dr. (maybe your dd would be more comfortable with a female dr. at this age?), I'm sure a lot of us will be dealing with this issue in the next few years w/our own daughters.

Thanks for all of your help. Made an appointment with an adolescent medicine practice (referred to by our pediatrician). She will have a pelvic exam given by a female doctor. She has no problems with her periods, cramping or any pain otherwise. Just seems to be a tampon issue.
