Question Coffee Drinkers: Is taste important to you?

I know, it kind of seems like a weird question but I am really wondering about this. I am a coffee drinker. I drink a pot or more a day. So, taste is MUCH more important than cost. I cannot drink bad coffee. I have had the cheap stuff from the grocery stores and I can't drink it. I also can't drink Starbucks (too bitter). I have been chatting with some friends lately and they say they buy "whatevers cheap". This is just one of many foods/drinks where "whatevers cheap" doesn't cut it for me. Being expensive doesn't mean I like it either though...I go off taste.

So, is taste important when you buy coffee or just cost?

Of course I LOVE the taste, but, go for whatever's cheapest or on sale I love, love, triple love the Gourmet Folgers line...caramel drizzle and vanilla biscotti are so smooth and rich, makes the house smell great also. I'm the only coffee drinker in the house, and I feel guilty buying the "high dollar" coffees, so I stick to the cheap crap. That being said, though, I don't have high standards lol! I'll eat anything generic, off brand, etc.

I buy on taste! I have tried the cheap coffee (even cheap beans) but can honestly say that I taste the difference! A lot of the cheaper coffee that I have tried is bitter. Yuck!

Ok...so I'm not totally weird. I love Farmer Brothers (they use it in lots of restaurants) and a local roast of Jackie's Java. It has to be 100% arabica beans...I can taste the difference otherwise. I just know my neighbor offered me a cup of coffee the other day and I took it and bleh..it was awful! She said she just loves it...pays less than $10 for a huge tub of it. I laughed and told her I pay that for a pound. She about died! LOL

Personally ladies for me I cannot answer that question for fear the lipton tea company will send me a letter..lol. I am such a huge tea drinker,I hate the taste, smell of coffee. However speaking for my parents who love and drink coffee, they swear by Dunkin Donuts coffee and only this coffee. They also tell me they use no sugar and that, this way, they really taste the truth taste of coffee. Also for my dh he only likes and drink Folgers coffee. For me personally drinking hot tea is too bitter to drink without sugar.Does anyone else here who drinks coffee or tea without sugar feel the same.. Peace... Catherine

I used to use cream AND sugar in coffee and sugar in tea. When I went on Weight Watchers, I taught myself to use nothing...and I really like coffee better black. Tea...I still like Farmer Brothers tea with a bit of sugar (I use liquid pure cane) but many flavored teas (like orange or apple), I can drink without any sweetener. It's just black tea that I have to have sugar in

I buy what tastes good. I only drink coffee when I'm out from Starbucks. At home I love Folgers instant coffee.

I'm good with most brands, but I can't stand weak, watery coffee, Most stuff in restaurants is way too weak for me.

Taste is the only thing! That being said, I've had expensive coffee that tastes bad and cheap coffee that tastes great. I like Starbucks, but won't go out of my way to find one. I detest Dunkin Donuts coffee unless it's iced.

My favorite coffee? Kirkland 100% Columbian from Costco.....go figure.

I agree with truble - weak coffee is the worst.

I don't have a great pallet, so as long as it's strong and not burnt, it's good enough for me.

My favorite is Senseo pods made in the senseo coffee maker but I had to give it up because it stains my teeth horribly. Absolutely nothing I do at home will remove the stains between my teeth. My dentist couldn't believe that coffee would cause staining like that. Sooo, since I'm the only one here that drinks coffee and only drink one cup a day, I enjoy instant Taster's Choice, black.

When I'm out it's usually Dunkin Donuts. Personally can't stand Starbucks. (although I had no choice but to drink it when I went to Cali.....my friend did order something I liked but can't remember what it is now). To me Starbucks is to bitter and WAY to expensive. At home we have Maxwell House, Folger's or Dunkin Donuts Coffee. In my coffee it's always cream and sugar.

As far as tea....I only drink Twining's Irish Breakfast Tea. I just add some vanilla creamer and I'm good to go.

I guess I'm a coffee snob. If someone offers me a cup of coffee in their home, I usually decline, because I don't want to take in the caffeine if I'm not even going to enjoy the cup, and it seems rude to respond with, "Well, what kind do you have?" I'd rather have water, then go home and make my coffee right (usually $9 to $10 dollar per pound, typically whole bean, not ground - unfortunately never sold in large cans...) I also cannot drink a cup of coffee if it's been sitting on the burner for more than a half hour, and I can't have it with skim milk.

Wow - I sound so negative - I imagine my chances of any of you inviting me over for a cuppa are now shot...

ETA: I don't care about name brands or price of any other item I eat or drink...

I usually don't care for Starbuck's but I had a brewed hot coffee there yesterday and it was actually good. It didn't have the bitter, burnt flavor it usually has. DH said they changed the way they make it awhile back to make it less bitter.

At home, I have a Keurig so I make one cup at a time and it's so good. The K-cups are pricey but I get them on sale at Kohl's. I have the"my K-cup" so I can also use my own fresh ground coffee.

There's a restaurant in our town with awesome breakfast food but we had to stop going there because the coffee is sooo bad.

yeah, what is up with that? Most great breakfast places have lousy coffee...I could never understand that! I guess I am a coffee snob! I buy freshly roasted beans from a local coffee shop and grind them as needed at home. It makes such a huge difference to have fresh roasted beans. The coffee I buy is about $10-11 a pound depending on what blend I get.

I don't have to have *good* coffee... but I can't stand *bad* coffee. I'm fine with Folgers or Maxwell House, but I bought some super-cheap $1/brick stuff (hey, you never know - I figured I might as well see if it was any good for a buck!) and it rather tasted like sewage. BLECH! Oh, my! SOoooOoo bad! Bad, burnt, old coffee in quick stops... BLECH. Some restaurants... the same.

I appreciate a *good* cup, but I drink way too much coffee to be able to afford good stuff all the time *and* feed my family - lol. So... I serve better stuff when we have company, but when it's just me I'm content with Folgers. Black. Always black.

Hubby & I go by taste not price. We both like Folgers for everyday, but also like Gevalia and Seattle Best for after dinner and special occasions.

I try to go by taste, but have tried all brands. I drink mine black with no sugar. I don't know if it is my taste or the coffee's change, but I drink one brand for awhile, and then I get a can that has a horrible taste, like cigarette butts were in it. So I switch to another brand. I clean my pot alot and have good water. Can't figure out what it is unless they pick the beans too green before being roasted. Don't have a grinder, so I buy the ground. One time my husband joked that maybe the pickers throw their cig butts in that bunch and was ground up. I have been drinking coffee since I was a kid. I guess I am hooked, as I really need it for a pick me up in the morning. Tea just doesn't do it for me. After I get two cups in me then I can function better-LOL!

Taste is important to me. I like Kona coffee. The perfect blend for me. Not too strong, not too weak. Starbucks is a little heavy for me. Dunkin Donuts lacks to punch/caffeine zing that I'm looking for, but will do in a pinch.

My sweetie and I have been accused of being coffee snobs, but for us it is a quality not quanity thing. I drink one large (16oz) cup in the morning and one small (8oz) cup after dinner.
But the snob thing comes from buying good roasted beans and grinding them in our Bunn commercial (yeah, like the one in the coffee aisle at the grocery store) grinder, brewing small batches with filtered water in an awesomely clean coffee maker.

But again for me it is about taste. I don't care for Starbucks because of the scortched taste. But I think McDonalds and Dunkin Donuts have good coffee. So go figure.

Ditto!

I love coffee! Even a bad cup of coffee in the morning is better than no coffee at all. (LOL) Normally, I prefer a little milk and no sweetener in my coffee. But, if it's "good" coffee, I can drink it black and unsweetened and be perfectly content. If it's instant (which I'd rather not drink, but sometimes do), I have to have it with milk and sweetener.

As far as restuarant coffee goes, I think McDonald's has the worst....yuck! I can only drink it with lots of cream and sweetener. I've tried Starbucks coffee a couple of times and really don't care too much for it, but I certainly seem to have acquired a taste for their sugar-free vanilla, soy latte w/whip!

I agree that weak coffee is the worst! It's very frustrating, like my tastebuds are being teased!

As far as iced tea, I don't drink it very much anymore. I use to drink it a lot when I was younger, but now I tend to drink more water than tea. I had even gotten to where I could drink it unsweetened. But, when DH and I got married he "cried" so much about it being unsweetened (then DS jumped on the band wagon) that I just caved in. I do like green tea though, and I'm going to try to start drinking it regularly. However, I'm sure I'll start off with it sweetened and gradually reduce the sugar until I can drink it unsweetened, if possible.

As far as hot tea, I like Earl Grey with a little sweetener. I'm not really a big fan of herbal teas, but I still like to try them (when I find free samples) in hopes I'll find one I like.

ETA - I remember receiving a free sample of San Francisco Bay coffee several years ago. I can't remember which blend it was, but I thought it was really great. I've looked on their web site and if I had to take a stab at it, I'd say it was probably the Colombian Supremo. Unless they had some other blends back then that they don't have now.

Me, either! My coffee pots (I've gone through a couple) are the kind that brew directly into a carafe, so they don't sit on a burner. I set the timer for 4:15 a.m., since I'm usually up by 5:00, if not earlier. I need either powdered creamer (I actually prefer this to half and half, but not Cremora, that stuff is vile!) or will take half and half in my coffee. If it's milk or skim milk, I skip the coffee altogether.

I have an aunt that uses a glass carafe pot and she keeps the leftover coffee to re-heat later in the day. Nasty! I prefer to just make what I need, even if I have to make a second pot later.

I drink my coffee black and, and coffee is a luxury grocery item to me, so taste is #1 for moi-self.
We buy our beans (Ethiopian) green (because it's much cheaper and fresher than already roasted beans), roast and grind em as we need em. I used to have a small coffee roaster, but when it broke I learned how to use my air popcorn popper to roast beans. (but you can even roast beans in a skillet). Brewed coffee goes straight from the pot to a thermal carafe in our house, I agree that burnt coffee taste is vile. There is one gas station near me that has coffee I'll drink, and I'll occasionally splurge for a cup of Caribou coffee. I agree that all of the Starbuck's coffees I've ever tasted were bitter.
I love all sorts of teas, but not ones that have flavorings added, I drink my tea the way it comes outta the teapot, no lemon, sugar or cream, but I do like lemon in iced tea. I used to only like very dark and strong types of tea leaves. I love the smoky flavor of Lapsang Souchong and the flowery taste of Earl Grey, but got hooked on green and white teas after a trip to Asia years ago.
There are 3 luxury food items I am goofily picky about and won't scrimp on: coffee, tea, and chocolate ;-) I figure my frugality in most other areas of spending gives me leeway to splurge on those 3 things.

I have only started drinking tea in the last 10 years. Mainly because every time I tried tea when I was younger someone would tell me to put in sugar, milk, honey etc. Turns out I like tea and only tea. Hot or cold, I don't want anything added to it.

I LOVE coffee! I couldn't live without it, but these days I can't stomach a lot of it. I can't stand weak, watered down coffee, or reheated coffee. I go for taste. I can settle for a cheaper coffee during these winter months when Coffeemate has their Peppermint Mocha creamer out, otherwise I have to have the good stuff! When I'm out, I only get coffee at the Starbucks, that is inside our Target, and I only do that if a certain Barista is working. She makes the best coffee!

Gosh, it's so nice to see you back, Nicole! How are things?? Hubby home yet?

Ooops...that was off topic - sorry!

I love coffee.....drink way too much. I love coffee more than I love good coffee, so I will drink anything just to have it. However, I do not like Maxwell House and won't buy it. I am OK with Folgers though. Dunkin' Donuts is my absolute fave...I live in New England after all. Starbuck is icky in my book, although they seem to have improved from that scorched nasty taste somewhat (i.e. I still drink it when it's the only choice....when I'm at a conference or something).

still looking for them, haven't been able to find them here locally yet. Online they are about $14.00 per box of 20-25, depending on the flavor

They go on sale for $9.99 all the time and I buy them when I can get at least 15% additional off.

If you have a Bed Bath & Beyond near you, they have the Keurig cups for $9.99 regular price, then you can use one of their 20% off coupons (I get them regularly in the mail and Sunday paper) to get them for $7.99 per box. If you're getting multiple boxes, you can use a separate coupon for each box.

Taste is very important to me. I will drink it at other peoples house but I do not care for weak coffee. I buy either Maxwell house when on sale at $5.99 or Folgers. I do not care for instant coffee either. This week Maxwell house(the big containers) were on sale at Walmart for $5.88 so I bought 2. I normally buy 4 or 6 when they are on sale but I still had some other containers at home so just bought 2.

My favorite coffee Is Tim Hortons though! MMMMM! I have bought that for home and its just not the same so I only get Timmies coffee when near one and thats not often enough for my liking LOL!

I also like Dunkin donuts and Eight O'clock coffee but they are too expensive so I put Dukin Donuts coffee on my christmas Wish list.

I am ALWAYS looking for coupons for Maxwell house and Folgers because we drink it so much. With Dh and I both home on disability we drink 2 to 3 pots Everyday! Too much I know but alas we still do drink that much.

Dh takes Powder creamer and sugar and I take Half & Half and sugar in mine.

Does anyone know what brand they use at Burger King. They used to call it bk joe. We tend to like this better than any of the other coffee's when we are out. I wonder if it can be bought somewhere?
