Septoplasty??

Has anybody had surgery for a deviated septum??

I went to the doctor today for yet another sinus infection. She mentioned to me that I had a deviated septum. It leans off to one side. Which could be causing my frequent sinus infections.

I have a funky looking nose anyway, due to an incident where a tire hit it when I was in junior high (18 years ago).

She told me that in the future I may need to go to an ear/nose/throat doctor to see what they have to say about my frequent sinus infections and septum.

Anybody go through this??

Nothing is set in stone yet, but she told me that any time I want to see an ENT doctor to let her know. If I could get my nose taken care of so I don't have frequent sinus infections (avg. 4x year) PLUS get my wierded out nose fixed, that would be wonderful. I am worried about the pain though. Plus, being a mom, I worry about the house falling apart and my family spontaneously combusting while I am not 100% well.

I had sinus surgery back in the 90's, broken down into 3 seperate surgeries. The 1st & 2nd surgeries scraped polyps from all of my sinuses. The 3rd surgery repaired my deviated septum (the most painful of the 3 surgeries). The surgery was beneficial, but vowed never to go through it again.

I had bunion surgery years ago, and the pain was awful!! I would not go through that again. EVER!!

OTOH, when I had my wisdom teeth removed, that surgery was not painful or horrible at all. I was up and moving the next day. No problems.

I am a big weenie when it comes to surgery and stuff. I think because I can't/won't sit still after it is all done. I feel like I should be up and moving immediately.

I have a deviated septum and several bone spurs in my nasal passages. I can't find a doctor who will do anything about it. The worse thing about it is that I get migraines which are made worse because of the spurs. I have been to several specialist and they keep telling me that its just migraines and that they don't feel I need anything done about either the deviated septum or the bone spurs. They have told me that neither should have anything to do with my migraines. But, having done research, I have found many articles that do find bone spurs and a deviated septum can cause migrianes. From what I have heard that the surgery can be very painful.

My Brother had huge problems with head aches sinus infections etc. He is a big baby but went through the surgery for his deviated septum and said it was easy. He was the biggest miserable lump when he had his wisdom teath out. He did a lot of research and found a Dr. that did a lot of them and he said that really did matter. He doesn't have any headaches or sinus problems since. They didn't change the outside look of his nose at all just repaired the septum.

About 6 years ago somebody in school broke my nose and I went to have surgery because I had already had problems and the fracture didn't help! In my case they had to chisel the bone around the nose (per Dr.) and I have to tell you, I was in pain. But it was sooo worth it! I was out of work for a week and even then looked like Alice Cooper . Now, even with a cold, I can breathe! We really don't remember pain much, please don't let the fear keep you from doing what makes you healthier! Good luck!

Both my husband and daughter had this surgery. It was painful the first day but both said it was well worth it. Less problems with infections.
