People stink sometimes...sigh....

Well, I think I should stop exercising. I was in the YMCA tonight for about 17 minutes. The building manager came to me on my machine. He had my license plate written down. It seems someone smashed my window completely out and dug under my middle seat and moved a coat to take my purse.

I had the door locked and the purse covered. I actually did have some cash in there for a change ($140 I was keeping for the weekend with DH). I had to cancel all my cards, etc. (No activity on those thank goodness!) The worst part...for some dumb reason I had my SS card in there! UGH!! Getting a new license, etc is going to be tough and a pain. The purse was new (Vera Bradley from the warehouse sale last month) and I loved it! Not sure I can replace it. Photos of the kids, my access pass to the school building where I work, my calendar. I need that stuff.

It's frustrating. They had to have been watching us or they wouldn't have known that we just went in and they had time. It's a small, safe town. Ugh... When the officer got there, he claimed that they had already beeen out and were on the track of the teens they thought were the culprits. Still no calls on my purse or its whereabouts. Now I get to deal with credit card companies, the DMV, SS adminstration, my work, the car insurance company, etc. Gee thanks..... I try to live right, etc. I would have gladly given that very cash to someone who needed it. Ugh.... we just don't need this right now. Thanks for reading my vent.

That stinks! I'm so sorry for you. It's hard to keep feeling good about stuff when someone victimizes you like that. I hope you get through all this stuff with as little aggravation as possible.

Please update us if your stuff is found!

Yes, the op is the victim and luckily no one is making light of the situation in this case.

op, that just stinks. Continue with all of your calls/notifications and also consider contacting the 3 major credit bureaus to put a freeze on your credit file, as well as your dh's.

They have your home address. Be very aware of your surroundings at home and security there.

This has become almost epidemic around here. Especially at gyms & places like that. I can't tell you how many of my friends this has happened to.

I'm sorry you were victimized. They tell us around here, that when you go to the gym to only take your keys and your license, and that you can keep in the glove compartment. The trunk isn't safe either, they pop those like nobody's business.

Thanks everyone. This is a small, seemingly safe town at a busy time at the Y. Mine was the onlye one that was tampered with. Amazing...

I cancelled all the cards and my ID to the school I work at. I should call the credit bureaus today. My license listed our old address, but I think I had insurance paperwork from a meeting yesterday with all my kids' socials on it! OH NO!! Crap!

Thanks agian everyone.

So sorry!

I have done the same thing--covered my purse, stuck in under the seat, etc. Won't do that anymore!

I hope the police catch them, and you don't have too much aggravation with replacing everything.

I'm so sorry this happened to you.

A few years ago, someone climbed through my mom's kitchen window just to steal her purse!! That's all they took. Apparently they ran up the road with it, looking for money? because there was all the pieces of it scattered.. a nice lady walking down the street picked it up... she found moms license, ss card, check book.. everything but the mone (I think she said she had 75 cents in it) and the actual purse.

Chances are they are kids and all they wanted was the cash and will ditch everything else. I'd be willing to bet that most of your stuff will show up here and there.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

I'm sorry to hear about the smash and grab that took place in your car. Seems the crime is getting worse, along with the economy.

Sorry this happened to you OP. What a pain to lose everything, so time consuming too. Makes me think twice before leaving my purse in the car, which I do daily!

That really sucks! I'm sorry you have to go through this aggravation, as if times aren't hard enough. I hope they find the perp(s) before too much damage is done. Good luck, OP.

So sorry this happened to you, OP. Been there, too. I do know how you feel.

Is there any chance there was a security camera outside??

Thanks everyone.

Guess what?? My items were found in a neighboring town about 20 miles away. EVERYTHING was found between 2 places/people. One man called me (he found the papers, makeup, etc...no wallet). He was worried about the paper with the SSNs on it. I talked him and he returned to search for more things. The police in the area had the wallet and cards, etc. The only thing missing was the cash. The cards were not used and all cancelled last night. My only concern now is watching the credit reports for the SSNs.

They do have security cameras in the parkign lot. They were pretty sure it was this Cherokee that they had reckless driving reports on. Umm...3 reckless driving reports and no license number to find the kids? Should be easy right? Barney Fife won't worry now I'm sure!! UGH! The window had a $100 deductible and we still need to fix the molding they messed up. Expensive lesson.

And all the women in the Y said their stuff was visible and unlocked. Why me then??? CRAP! Oh well...I said I would be happy to get the stuff back. Just need to keep an eye out.

I appreciate the words and advice. No weekend fun for me. (I had saved that cash for me to spend. I had won $500, but spend most of it on kids, glasses for DS, etc.) Oh well.....

OP, your insurance company should pay for all of your broken window. Isn't it just like when a deer or a rock hits your windshield? Insurance should pay for all of it with no deductible involved. I would think they'll pay for your stolen items, too, since it was covered by insurance, including giving you your cash back.

According to the car insurance, there is a $100 deductible for that damage. They will pay the difference. The contents are covered under home owners insurance and we have a $500 deductible there. Oh well.,...

Thanks again mom2twins.

I am glad you got some things back. My Mom had her purse stolen by a crackhead a couple of years ago in a Safeway parking lot. You got off pretty easy compared to what happened to her.

I bet they WERE watching you. The bastards probably hang out in parking lots all day watching people. I have to leave my purse in the car when I am working going into people's homes and I worry about this a lot.

The truth is as long as we are not locking people up and it's not a priority to use money for law enforcement this will keep happening. People break the law there is no consequence why should they stop? Meanwhile us honest people suffer.

This stinks but I am glad that you were able to get most of your items back.
On a positive note LET THIS BE A LESSON FOR EVERYONE!!! I am awful about leaving things in my car (purse, phone, camera). WIth the holidays coming up everyone needs to make sure that your car is empty. Thieves know what that big lump is in the seat under your coat. OP you have made me open my eyes.

So sorry this happened to you! I am mad for you--gosh how I hate criminals! My cc number was stolen online a few years back, boy, was that a mess to fix/clear up (I'm still watching/worrying that some unexpected something will show up some day on my credit report, etc.). It really sounds like it was a bunch of teens looking for cash or they would have taken the other stuff--the ss card will fetch quite a bit of money for illegals and the credit cards, well we all know what damage they could have done with those. Sorry again, please keep us posted--it's a good chance they will find them.

The reason these crimes keep happening is because nothing is done about them! I had this happen a little over a year ago and lost a lot. My wallet with credit cards, license, ss card (I had just used it to fill out paperwork at my new job and forgot to take it out right away), and less than a dollar in change (no cash, thank goodness). My cell phone and GPS were in there, too. The criminals must have been watching because I was away from my car less than 15 minutes. I got everything cancelled right away so the only thing they got was my cell phone and GPS which wouldn't work unless they bought a new charger cable for it since it was almost dead at the time. The phone was listed stolen and supposedly couldn't be used again. The really rotten thing is, the punks tried to use my credit card several times and the clerks at the stores were told to retain the card because it was stolen when they swiped it for authorization and they GAVE IT BACK and DIDN"T CALL POLICE! The guys were caught on security camera trying to use it but they were never caught. I was basically told by the officer that they weren't even wasting time on it because they had bigger fish to fry! My insurance company was really wonderful too They basically divided up everything that was stolen between homeowners and auto so that everything fell under our deductables ($500 each) I'm still not sure why a GPS would fall under homeowners since you can't use it at home but if it fell under auto, they would have to pay! It's been over a year and it still ticks me off. Those of you who leave your purses in the car for even a few moments are dodging a bullet every time you come out and find it still there. Trust me, I thought it would never happen to me, now I know better and never leave anything in the car that is valuable!

Wink

Personally there were too many times I left my purse in the car while at work and then a few times some of the ladies had their windows broke just to get the pocketbook. Lesson learned will never do that again. To the op I am happy to hear you recovered some of your items. Peace.. Catherine

Glad you were able to recover most of your stuff. Although you should be cautious, I wouldn't worry too much about the SSNs. It's unlikely the theif even looked at them. If only the cash is missing that is probably all he/she was interested in. This is a very common theift. My BIL is a police officer and they often find wallets along the side of the road, in a dumpster, etc. with nothing missing except the cash.
