What style is your home - inside and out?

Just a light topic since I'm sick of all this election talk here and IRL....

What is the style of your home....i.e. the architectural and period style? Contemporary, colonial, ranch, split-level, apartment, condo, double-wide. ...type of windows, garage or no, big or small yard, etc....

And how do you decorate it?

As for us, we live in a pretty average center hall colonial (8 rooms, 4 beds, 2.5 baths) with a 2-car attached garage. The front of the house is traditional colonial with a hip roof, 6 over 9 windows, 8' ceilings (short by today's standards). Just your regular old house. The back is slightly more contemporary with French doors and sky lights.

Everything is decorated traditionally and in colors that are now out of style (burgundy, navy, hunter green) - and in need of a major makeover after 16 years Appliances and plumbing, etc are all starting to fall apart. Ugh Where to start??? (that's another topic, I guess).

Tell about your "castle".

We have French Colonial and try to decorate within that style. It has 2 balconies and a back deck. 5 sets of French doors that give a LOT of natural light. It came with a 2 car garage but we added another garage just so we could fit the cars in the regular garage.

We paid next to nothing for it because it was a foreclosure, but we have put a lot of work in it.

It is still painted a puke yellow color on the outside stucco and I can't wait to get that changed, but we just ran out of money after redoing the interior.

Hard wood floors and granite counters, all new because we had to it was unlivable the way it was.

I live in a big log cabin. All wood inside and out. (except for a couple floors which are ceramic tile and linoleum) I try to decorate it country-ish since that's where we live. I have quilts hanging, antiques scattered throughout the house and when I buy seasonal decorations, I try to stick with a country look.

It has 3 bedrooms and 2 baths, a 2 1/2 car unattached garage and up until this past summer we had a log barn too, but we had it taken down cuz it was unsafe. We have a pavilion out back which last summer dh sided it up, looks so much nicer. We keep our wood in it for winter heating. Stays nice and dry in there. The house also has a deck that goes around 3 sides and the upper deck goes out from the master bedroom/loft area.

As far as improvements, I re-did the kitchen island counter. It had just a cheap countertop (the other counter still does) so I tiled it to match my tile floor. Looks so much better and the kitchen is brighter. We have had the floor and shower in the master bath re-tiled, and the floor in the 2nd bath was just linoleumed (is that even a word?? ) about a year or so ago. We also changed the railing for upstairs. It was a colonial style which did not go with the log cabin at all, and the thin spindles kept falling out. We had the Amish build us a log railing (matches our log bed) and it looks like it was built with the house, it's beautiful. Not to mention it's sturdier and safer.

Well first off my husband is a builder, so we totally designed all elements oursleves. Its huge center hall colonial.. We have old moldings all around inside. We have a huge front porch which we love. Inside its a mix of what I call french country cottage old old shabby chic..Nothing modern at all. The older the better, the color palette is mostly blues, greens, pink and yellow and some earth tones. There is no red, black or gold at all.. My younger dd;s bedroom is all 60's she is 16 but loves Led Zeppelin, her room is really cool, totally a blast from the past. Her walls are painted a deep orange and her rug which we jsut got is a shade of what I call dark grape shaggy rug. She used old Albums to make a border around the room. This is a fun post, so please continue. P.s I also collect fossil watches and their boxes and hand painted pieces of wooden furniture. please continue to share ..peace... CAtherine

Outside is the classic 1967 mobile home style. Bluish grey with burgendy trim. Inside is updated-no paneling, the windows aren't crank outs, etc.

Decorated in the "Stuff I Like" style with a touch of thrift store thrown in.

We live in a 100 year old victorian home. It has a wrap around front porch with pillars and turets. We are looking to paint in the spring and are currently searching historic color schemes. 3 bedrooms up and 1 down, 2 baths. My husband and I have gutted the kitchen, bedrooms and dining room. Only one bath left to update. I love the character of the house and will miss it when we sell.

We live in a ranch home (when we bought it my children were small and my dh worked nights and I am terrified of fire.

My house before this was a 2 story and I couldnt sleep nights wondering how I would get 3 babies out by myself if it was burning.
Thats why the ranch.

Ofcourse they are in their late twentys early thirties and I hate ranches. Four years ago we had a one car garage and had a contracter build it into a 4 car garage with 4 rooms above and 1 more bathroom over the breezeway. Its white with black shutters. Large front porch and 2 decks out back. one half acre of land on a country road. God is my neighbor (very quiet) and it is furnished country. We have put alot of money into it. All new windows, furnace wood floors etc. The thing I love about my house is the fireplace in livingroom and changed it to gas. It has a large kitchen unlike other ranches.

We used to have a typical 1978 2 story with basement box house on 5 acres with a huge barn, pale yellow with rotting windows and disco era interior. We began remodeling in July and now have a farm house style with wrap around porch, added a third car garage with carriage doors, added a gable over my DD's window with window seat on the interior and added a family room. We have done tons to the house and it doesn't even look the same. The people that come for quotes on the gutters, etc, ask if the home is new construction. Kitchen is currently torn out but cabinets are in the third car garage awaiting the drywall work to be completed. We bought the house because of the location, totally secluded. We picked up another 13 acres so we now sit back here on our own on 18 acres and no one can see our house from the street. My interior style is a combination of simple and sllightly contemporary; stainless, cherry, warm earth tone walls, etc.

oops forgot to add some things. Inside we have 5 bedrooms, the master suite as a big private bathroom which is my favorite, I also have a sitting area on the other side its truly a really really big room. In addition to that, we have 3 more full bath and 2 1/2 powder rooms. I have large eat in kitchen and a formal dining room, we have the den, the formal living room, and the florida room. Downstairs is our finished basment and 3/4 is our son Thomas's room which is really like his own apartment since he has his bedroom, living room and his own bath. But the most fun is that is a totally used home all the way. Why well we live with 3 shelties, 3 cats, 1 ferret, 1 rabbit and frogs, they are my sons lol. And of course with a 16 year old and a almost 20 year old there are always plenty of kids over all the time. Also on a final note, literally 85 percent of the house is decorated from garage sales and tags sales I simply love finding great bargains... peace and keep sharing... Catherine

I have a typical 1970's ranch with a finished basement. 4 bedrooms and 1.5 baths. Vaulted ceilings in the kitchen, dining, living and all bedrooms.

It is decorated in no particular style. Just with what I like. My dining room is a France theme. I just redid the main bathroom this past summer and put in a new sink, toilet and slate tile flooring.

I redid the kitchen about 3 years ago with paint, counters, sink and all new appliances. The wall paint in there was darker tan than the rest of the house.

The wall colors are all a light tan but my living room has a burgundy accent wall (15 feet tall because of the vault) with burgundy and sage accent colors throughout. Now the kids rooms are different colors...one is pink with white trim and the other is a minty type color.

I tend to decorate with burgundy or red a BUNCH. I love those colors.

We have an oversized 2 stall garage, a small deck, large patio and privacy fenced in yard (because I hate some neighbors..LOL).

Another mobil ehome owner here!! Mine is 1965, blue gray & white outside, covered patio. Our yard has a huge pine tree aka the Christmas tree, in front of the home, an apple & Maple trees in the back, a Lilac bush and what's left of my garden on the side.

Inside focus points are my angels and everything else that I like.

My 2 biggest projects for 2009 are getting a storage shed and painting the outside. My plumbing and wiring were redone before I moved in and all the rooms were painted then also.

We live in a small country home in a rural community. Our house is what I call "modern comfortable". I don't have a lot of things on the walls and since it is very small in here I keep clutter, knickknacks, etc to a minimum. I am an organized person so my house is clean and organized. The outside is typical small town you can see it on my myspace in the pics section.

I am the queen of the Doublewide trailer

Yes our home is a MH doublewide with a large screened porch in the front and an enclosed utility porch in the back. It sits on a little over an acre in a high desert valley between two mountain ranges.

I am not much of a decorator so most of the decoration is in the form of photographs. My sweetie is a photographer and has taken some beautiful photos that I have had printed into all sizes and framed.
People seem to like the idea of seeing a postersize photo of Horseshoe Bend on the Colorado river while the are using the guest bathroom. Or three framed 4 x 6 prints of macros of desert wildflowers.
I also have a wall dedicated to framed 5 x 8 prints of the people, animals and memories in my life that are important to me.
Other than that I can just say that our house is fuctional and suits us.

Now my yard is another thing I get many compliments on my little oasis in the desert.
So I guess you can tell where my priorities lie.

And if that Red dog doesn't quit lying in the herb bed, somebody is in trouble.

We bought our home in 1982. The house plan was Better Homes and Gardens home of the year 1949. The original owners sent in for the plans from the book and built everything to specifications a year later. It is a Cape Cod 1 1/2 story on a beautiful corner lot slightly less than an acre. When we bought it from the estate of the original owners, we spent years remodeling. Then.....2 years ago, we enlarged the breezeway, and went above the breezeway and garage with a master suite, lg closet, and utility room. We also added on a wrap around porch.

Before this major construction, we hired an architect and told him that we wanted the house to look as though it grew from the ground up this way and not look like a typical addition. He did a beautiful job by incorporating all of the interior and exterior angles and creating a nice balance with additional dormers on the front.

10 years ago we built a 30 X 45 building out back and DH uses part of it for a workshop while the rest is for vehicles, golf carts, bikes, and stuff.

We also built a playhouse out back with a 3 sided deck around it. It is about 8 X 12 with carpet, pull out sofa bed, cable, telephone, skylight and anything else we decide to drag up there. It is fun to sleep out there once in a while. It is my idea of camping.

Our friends refer to our property as "The Ponderosa"

We have a small 1300 ft. cottage that I bought three years after my divorce--four days before Katrina hit! I remember walking out into the parking lot at the title company and bawling...I was (and still am) so proud of myself and my progress. It's nothing fancy, but it is exactly what I wanted. The decor is just me...fleur de leis hanging from the chandelier in the breakfast room, a ships wheel from a riverboat in the bedroom that's decorated in a nautical theme, assorted iron crosses on the walls, red-yellow-black guestroom with Olivia pictures/items on the wall...just whatever says, "Marilou!" It may seem weird to some, but it's just what I've always wanted...glass windows that look out over the woods, a pond and ducks next door...Life is good.

We just built our new home, infact we file for occupancy on Monday and hopefully move in next weekend.

What style is my house inside and out? I would call it Keowa eclectic, a little traditional meets contempary meets modern. I took alot of things I liked from other houses and added them to mine. I have to say it looks really good.

I have not decorated the inside yet because I haven't moved in. But we did go with all cherry cabinets and granite countertops, instead of tile or wood floors we put in cork flooring which I love. I have black appliances because I am not a fan of stainless.

We both work fairly stressful jobs so when we come home we want someplace cozy and relaxing. In the livingroom and bedroom we have very plush, cozy furniture with calming wall colors. The kitchen is someplace we wanted to be more alive so we added little whimsical features to it like colorful pendant lights and colored glass above the sink. Our entryway I wanted to be welcoming and inviting so I did light, happy colors. I want people to smile as they walk in our house and I thought a start is to have someplace that when they walk in and look around it sets the tone.

My DH is a techie. He loves gadgets and whatnot. So the modern comes in with different elements added into the house like our dimmer switches that are touch pads or panels to control different zones in the house. We have a touch screen thermostat and all cat6 wiring and other things I don't really understand lol.

I am very happy with the way it is coming out and I can't wait to get to live in it.
