Do you feel that your job is secure?

I work in a call center. Telemarketing. We try to upgrade people into newer cars. Well, as times are tough with car sales, people are not wanting to purchase or set an appt to even have thier car appraised. Truly, gut feeling, the company is on the way out the door. They have already had thier first round of layoffs and also quit matching 401k's. We are even having to pitch a wrong number. I do hope it gets better, but I truly have my doubts.

My job is relatively secure....as long as there are major retailers who need work comp insurance and/or work comp administrators.

My job is pretty secure as I am self employed. I have not yet seen a huge hit in business and it looks like my holiday season *should* fair well.

DH is another story. There have been layoffs on and off over the last few years. They are laying off some people now because they bought a company and of coarse, that gives them duplicate employees for one job. I suspect there will be many more layoffs because of the president who was elected. The CEO came out prior to the election and said if Obama was elected, the company would be *forced* to lay off even more people than the original plan set forth if Obama put into place the business taxes he wants. That money they will lost in taxes will have to come from somewhere and it's going to be jobs....and most likely jobs in the US So, we keep crossing our fingers but we can't really worry as it does us no good

Self employed here too and actually doing better than last year (not exactly sure why, but I must be doing something right).

I am VERY worried about DH's job, he brings in the real bill money for the house. He works in the asphalt department of a huge quarry, but they have been firing management and laying off workers for a couple of months now. No one is building, so no need for new roads, the only work they get is airports or roads, but those are slowing down too.

This is the first year since he's worked there that they're laying off, we'll be in trouble this winter, so we are already cutting back to bare necessities. We have a big stockpile to help us and he'll still get unemployment, but that's nothing compared to the check we usually live on.

I work two jobs, one part time. Well the part time job offered me full time with higher pay and I decided after a long debate to take the job. I decided not to give my "other" employer notice until the actual two weeks (I am suppose to start on Dec 1st). The job called today and retracted the offer. The company had not made enough money to keep hardly anyone on. Only 3 people will remain in the company (very small company) and there's 12 including me. I'm so happy I didn't give notice but I'm so bummed. The pay was so much better than what I'm making and I would be doing everything I had gone to college for (business/office). The market just isn't there anymore for anything

I work in a school, actually in 4 schools, and I am the only one qualified to do my job. I am secure. DH has worked there for 32 years and would be one of the very last ones to go. He could also go to another branch, so no lay off for him.

I sub, so as long as teenagers are made to attend school, I guess my job is safe. I do worry about dh and his job. He works for GE (been there 21 years). Right now things are busy for them, but it looks slow in the next few years. Its scary because GE is known for closing plants in the US and moving them elsewhere. They could decide tomorrow to close the plant and 500 people would be unemployed. We have actually lived with this fear for years now..

I sub as well. They have a shortage here so, yes, extremely secure! The school would take me on full time as a teacher in a heartbeat but I don't want to because I would have to give up my volunteer work -- no way -- and DH is completely on board with that decision.

DH works for a community college in an administrative position. A year ago, he left a job with a granite company (not secure) as the building industry started slow down and an offer came in from his former employer at the college. Perfect timing; no-brainer.

Our current jobs are both very secure and we are extremely thankful for that!

DH works at the local prison.

Yes, he has job security. As long as there are felons, he has a job.

I am a sub teacher as well. I am pretty much working full-time as it is. As long as there are teachers, DH's job "seems" pretty secure-he actually got a nice raise in July. However, it is pretty scary to think that anyone could be laid off tomorrow, and there is really nothing you can do about it. We would be totatlly hosed.

As long as the Federal Govt is operating I SHOULD have my job. However I am not a "permanent" employee nor do I get any type of benefits whatsoever so I guess I am more expendable than those who are and do.

I am a SAHM and do freelance stuff, so I am fine. DH works for a major company that is still doing pretty well. For the most part, they don't lay off people, they just eliminate jobs and make you find a new one within the company within 30 days. If you find one, great, if not, you're out of luck. DH is well liked by many in various departments across the company so he shouldn't have any trouble finding a new job within the company in the unlikely event his job happens to be eliminated.

I work for a major retailer and have been with them for 8 years so I'm in no danger of being laid off. However, I can see hours being cut to the bone if sales don't pick up.

But I'm not sweating it. I have about 5 months worth of bill money saved up and if worse comes to worse I'll get a second job. The economy will have to get REALLY BAD before there are no jobs at fast food joints and the like.

My dh company is going to do layoffs. They are going after the employees with over 20 years. I guess it doesn't pay to stay at one job for a long time.

I work at a major optical retail shop. We have been doing awesome business in our store for the last several months. That said, I have always felt that I will not have a job from year to year. They havent laid off anyone because of bad business yet, and glasses are something alot of people need.
My husband will have a permanent job as long as there are felons. He works at a prison. Good job security!

I am an elementary school librarian and was layed off this summer. Well, actually I was bumped out of my job due to lack of seniority in the district. But then the person that bumped me went out on a 4 month medical leave so I was called back in to sub. So now I am doing the job I've been doing for the past 10 years (and dearly love) for a lot less money! I am now applying in other districts and public libraries.

Nope, in my 25 years in the electronics industry, I've never felt absolutely secure. It's a highly competitive industry. But hey, what other industry has delivered more performance in a smaller footprint for a lower cost year over year over year?

We don't really lay people off per se; they're not typically coming back.

One job, yes, the other one, not so much!
I work in a high school, inclusion for special ed kids. Since we'll get twice the number of SPED students next year, I think I'm good there.
Second job - massage therapist for a chiropractor. The only patients I have left are insurance cases.

I work in a business office of a small school district in New York State. My husband works for the Dept of Environmental Conservation. Because of our positions we are hearing some pretty bad news. New York State is in terrible shape,
Our superintendent sent an e-mail to all staff cutting field trips and staff development. He wants all staff to think outside the box and think of ways to save money. My boss (business manager) says we will have cuts. That means more teachers on the streets.
My husband has been told by the governor that layoffs are going to happen. All departments need to cut back. My husband doesn't know where else to cut.
Both our positions should be safe for at least a year but who knows after that.

No I'm not sure. I work for a market research firm and the client I work for is on of the Big 3. Gee we are in about the worst shape of the 3. I think I am safe until April 1 when my portion will finish mailing.

MIne yes I work part-time as a Kindergarten paraprofessional as long as they have Kindergarten they will need us para's I have been working with the same teacher for 9 years . Now for my Husband most defintely, his Dad started his own business over 53 years old and with him and my dh and his 3 brothers build homes for a living, They started with Condo;s and now have expanded their business into private homes , single family homes, 2 and 3 family homes and at this point , they cannot build them quicker. Because they are all in Queens New York which is cheaper compared to Manhattan , New York City and in Queens where they build is only 30 minutes from the city and much cheaper. So as long as they can keep building homes and people are willing to but homes at least here closer to NYc where so many people work, its been a very successful business... HOwever I sincerely feel bad for others whom their jobs are at jeopardy especially in this holiday season. However being with Family and enjoying good food and having your health are the best Christmas presents... Peace... CAtherine

Ugh. My employer just reset expectations for Q4 down to a level less than Q3. That hasn't happened in more than 20 years (Q4 is historically our strongest quarter). Ugh. Hang on, the ride will be a wild one.

"They" say you should have six months of bill payments available for us that would be about $12,000 cash who has that kind of money just sitting around for emergencies?

We do not have 6 months in *cash* We have about 4 months. The rest is in stock. We figured we could always sell it one day but now ...well, it's not worth a lot.

DH came home yesterday and announced his company is making everyone take the week before xmas off. The already have to take the week after off. If you have vacation, great...take it but if you don't , it's unpaid. I am SO glad DH hasn't used all his vacation days yet. I can't imagine having to have him take a week unpaid and feel for those who will have too. At least if they tell you at the beginning of the year, you can plan (most employees get 3 weeks except new hires so they will have to take unpaid). Thing is, it's not a "normal" thing so if you plan on it, save vacation so you can have it for if it happens again, they might not close and then your manager *could* say "you can't take that time off...we need you". And you can't roll those days into next year so you would lose them.

We definitely do and I would really hope that most families do. In fact, in this economy and job environment, I think 6 months might be on the shy side for some professions. Sometimes it can take a year or more to find a new, close-to-comparable-income position. It's sad and scary, but it's true....

Um, "most" families do NOT have six months of living expenses saved.

The number of people simply living paycheck to paycheck is scary.

Is my job secure? Nope, no way. Like a couple other pp, I work in special ed. As long as families continue to move out of my district and the budget continues to be cut, there's no security. I've got the least seniority where I'm at (4 years). I've got sub-certification, but most subs I know are fully-credentialled, and most are seeking FT positions and have been unable to do so (they cheer when someone announces a pregnancy, because atleast that's a long-term assignment to look forward to).

My husband is an engineer. His job has never been secure - he's been laid off twice (one of those times, the company closed it's doors) since 2001. No raises in 10 years for him either - only pay cuts. Lovely.

I guess I've drunk the Koolaid of Dave Ramsey, The Wealthy Barber, and The Millionaire Next Door, etc and think that anyone can (and should) put 10% of their income into savings and make this happen (pay yourself first).

I think that *some* people are having issue (like us) because we put some money into savings and some into stock. We are not "put all of your eggs in one basket" kind of people. Therefore, we don't have all we should because the stock took a dump.

I don't think most people have any savings. I know lots of paycheck to paycheck people. Why save for tomorrow when you can live today? Not *my philosophy but it rings true for many

Yes, as long as there is a need for violin teachers and band directors, I will have a job. I do not yet have tenure in this district, after next year, I will, however, I am not the low man on the totem pole in the music department. There are three under me, so worse comes to worse, I may have to teach general music. Yuck!
