Do you have bamboo close by??? You can have them make bamboo fishing poles. http://www.associatedcontent.com/art...e_fishing.html or try a google search of "bamboo fishing poles" or "cane poles"

In 8th grade shop, my son made those Cracker Barrel peg games (they cut straws into even lengths instead of golf tees). Not sure you can let these kids use a drill, but it's a pretty easy project. cj/

How about a small wooden box for change or rings/watches they could decorate the box or shalack (sp?) pictures of the children with the dad or pictures of different memories the children have on the box, sounds pretty easy and would not really cost alot.

| Thank- You all for the suggestions, I really like them all. Sadly My den has little money right now and trying to get the parents to support a fund raiser it almost as bad as pulling teeth. So with this I'm trying to find cheap gifts that I can budget on my own for them to make. Seems as if every time something comes up it always "hits" the parents at the wrong time of the month when they have no money . Oddly we have only gone camping 1 time since we regrouped ( we are not a full year pack, only met during the school year months - Aug-May )and thus far I have only had 3 parents ( 3 out of 6 paid) to help pay for the trip. I'm "owed" another 60.00 which would have gone for this project ( their craftsman activity badge ). But such is the life of scouting, so it once again will fall on me to supply everything and right now money is getting really tight, but the boys don't understand such grown up problems and I can't let them down. Thanks a million everyone, I'll check all the suggestions and see what I can budget for them. |

I have another suggestion that would be cheap ( I was a den mom for my 16 yr old many yrs ago) we took them on a nature hike with brown bags and had them pick up pretty leaves pine needles just stuff they found on the walk, then on the next meeting we made a placemat we glued all the stuff the boys found on a semi large peice of paper, and then laminated it, mine right now is still on the back part of my computer I see it everyday, that I am sitting here.

Here are a couple of links to ideas. The first one is a decorated coffee mug. You can usually find these for a dollar each at dollar tree or dollar store. Father's Day Crafts: Dad & Me Coffee Mug - Kids' Gift Ideas for Dad - Kaboose.com This one would be cheaper to do. My kids are making search jars for relatives. Use a small canning jar or pb jar. Collect 20 very small items: button, lego, bean, safety pin, etc. Fill the jar with birdseed and place the items inside. Attach a list (we typed ours up very small and glued it to the lid, but you wouldn't have to.) so the recipient knows what to search for. They sell something similar at amazon for $20. Cheap, fun and different. ![]() Amazon.com: Find It Games Original Version - Green Ends: Toys & Games |

| Sorry everyone, been really busy with a puppet show for the boy's showman badge. I'm still kicking around the post here and so far I really like the Coffee Cup,and the Photojojo pencils ( the pencils are way too cute !! ) But I have a question for everyone, Some of the boys in the den don't have a Father in their life, Do I suggest they make a gift for their GrandFather >?Or just leave it alone and let them do a gift for the mom ? I feel so badly knowing some of the boys will be making gifts for mom and dad and a few boys will only be doing it for their mom. I sure don't want to make any child feel bad about not having a father in their life. So what do you suggest I do ?P.s Thank- You all for the replies, I'm still looking around |

| Do you have to specify who they are supposed to make the gifts for? Can you just say, "We are having a Christmas present craft day!" and let them decide who they want to give the end result to? All of the suggestions you've received so far could easily be adapted by the boys to make "male" or "female" presents.

How about, instead of a present for dad, make it a present for the special man in the child's life? This way they can make it for any man they are close to. I like the rock idea. You could take the boys on a nature hunt to find the rocks. Have the boys help you think of short sayings. Some suggestions "You Rock" or "Rock On". HTH, Judy p.s. They could also make more than one other people. |

I am glad you thought of the boys that do not have dads. It always hurt me a bit growing up when we made "men" gifts since I did not have a father that was alive. I always gave whatever I had made to my mom but no one ever had that consideration. I like the above posters idea of it being an open gift and then you could suggest for a dad, mom or family member. Good luck with everything.
