Michaels open Thanksgiving night

I was just at Michaels and one of the clerks told me they will be open Thanksgiving night - maybe 6-9 - for pre black Friday deals. She's thinks it will be the same deals as Black Friday. Nice heads up!

Kind of sad that some employees will have to work Thanksgiving evening. Really, who wants to shop Thanksgiving evening? Black Friday is good enough for me.

Red face

I would have to agree Thanksgiving is such a family holiday before all the rush of Christmas shopping. I would sincerely feel bad for people whom would have to work and not be able to be with their families. Of course while I know there are plenty of people who must work, doctors and policeman and fireman and such, I believe there are certain days when stores should not be open and people would be able to be with their families especially for the holidays.... Peace... Catherine

I don't know. It might not be too bad. I guess it depends on if the employees are missing family activities or not. We have Thanksgiving lunch. If they have enough employees that want to work then I think it's a good idea. Especially if they pay them overtime! I'll probably run over (it's pretty close to my house) just because I can! lol If I worked in retail I would much rather work Thanksgiving night than early Friday morning!!!!! Kmart is open on Thanksgiving too isn't it? And Walgreens?

Hmmm, 6-9, that means you get to do all the eating, but miss the clean up, right? Not bad either, because not too many people will be out so you won't be too stressed. Maybe if the associates work Thanksgiving night (missing clean up at home!) they also won't have to be the ones getting up in the wee hours of the morning for BF hours.

We have a small family so there really isn't much cleaning up to do. The main thing I like at Michaels is their scrapbooking stuff but I bet that won't even be a speical deal! I do hate getting up early since I am a night owl!

I used to work retail. For the most part they don't care that you're missing family activities, many people need to be in the store for it to operate. It's a bad cycle. This year they are open 6-9, next year maybe 4-9, then noon to 9. We all need a day to not think about work. Let these people, that make very little btw, have at least one day before the craziness of the holiday crowds. It's a craft store, will you have a craft emergency on Thanksgiving? Sorry if I sound grumpy. I just feel so strongly about this. With unemployment up people are less likely to complain, they will allow themselves to be taken advantage of, even if it is a low paying job. It's a job.

I have never agreed with retail being open on Holidays. I remember I vowed not to go to KMart on THanksgiving the first year they were open but they still do it, so they must get enough business that it makes sense to them.
My mother in law works at Meijer and they usually allow the employees in her department to say when is best for them to work, based on when they have family activities.

theresa981 is absolutely right. I worked in retail management for many years. We needed a certain number of people just to open the store. The company didn't care if people had plans or not - we needed the employees to be there. There needs to be at least a couple days that retail workers can have off with their families... I feel so strongly about it that I refuse to shop on Thanksgiving Day.

Thanksgiving ins the only day we shop at Kmart. We don't really like Kmart but it's the only thing open in town. After we eat, the boys watch football (yuck) and us girls go to Kmart. I always feel bad for the employees. I used to work retail as well but I only had to work xmas eve (which sucked because that was our families big day).

This year we are going to my in-laws (oh joy). It's a small town in KS so I'm sure it will all be closed and I'll be stuck in the house all day with my in-laws. I just hope they have their internet connection up and running. I love family time but a whole say with my in-laws....we will run out of things to talk about quickly

When we lived in TN we did. It was just dd, dh and I, our family was 4 states away. We hit Sonic for lunch, KMart for shopping, then home to do dinner. It was fun and crowded.

If you work retail don't you expect to work some holidays? Doesn't that just come with that type of job?

I personally feel Kathy that there should be some family oriented holidays that should be spend with family and friends and to have a store open just to shop, you and I can miss out on one day and spend the whole next day from opening to closing and shop till ya drop..lol.. Peace... Catherine

Some holidays like 4th of July, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Veterens Day, Valentines Day, New Years, St. Patricks Day, Cinco De Mayo, Halloween. When I went into retail it was not the norm to be open Thanksgiving, Easter and Christmas. I am willing to budge on Easter and Christmas. Thanksgiving was just the day I cherished most because it was the last day I could relax before I was faced with grumpy shopper after grumpy shopper for the next month or so. Until you work retail I don't think you really understand how mean spirted shoppers are in Nov and Dec. They are extreamly rude to staff and other shoppers. It is far from the Merriest Time of the Year. Retail workers are working extra long hours with very few breaks, paid very little, and treated like scum, give them one day to relax.

I worked retail but it was YEARS ago!! I guess I just figure it comes with the job. At my other job (very, very partime) we deal with the elections. During the presidential election season I think most of the elections staff works every day for about 6 weeks! If Halloween falls during the week then there's no treat or treating at their houses. It's very, very tense the whole time too and they get angry people coming in a lot about this and that. The elections staff has to be there at 6:00am on election day and work until usually 1:00am and be back to work at 8:00 in the morning. This also stinks but it comes with the job. It's the same in the years that the governor is up for election too. I guess that's how I see retail these days. Some parts of peoples jobs stink! It would make it a whole lot easier if bosses would take into accounts employees personal situations if possible. And with the economy the way it is don't we want people out there shopping????

I just don't believe in stores being open on days such as this. That is a family holiday, and nobody has a real reason to be out shopping.

I am on call for Recovery at my hospital on Thanksgiving, and I would be ticked if I got called in for anything other than an EMERGENCY.

I love to shop as much as the next person, but I really wish that stores hadn't gone to opening on the holidays. Besides, with the advent of 24x7 internet shopping, it's not like there's no outlet for the addiction. And it can be an addiction....like my DS2 says "Mom, Target endcaps are like crack to you" Or buying 400 items at Kohls .
