| Getting your Credit Report / FICO scores
My DH and I are getting ready to get a new car and I'd like to look up our credit report and find out our FICO score before we go to finalize and get the loan just to make sure there isn't anything on there that shouldn't be. I googled it and came up with all sorts of links, but most of them were for free reports with some sort of trial you have to cancel within 30 days or something similar. Isn't there a place you can get this information without paying? Thanks! Becky |

You can get each credit bureau for free through www.annualcreditreport.com however it will not give you your score. They will charge you a fee to receive your score. I worked at a financial and when I ordered my score from transunion the score was very different than when I had it pulled through the financial. It was almost 100 points different. Apparently when the financial orders a credit score they are sold a score that is specifically for financials. If you purchase the score don't be surprised if it is different than what your bank/credit union has listed. |

Keep in mind that there are three credit bureaus and all can have different information on your report and different FICO scores. Unless there is some misinformation listed on one, they should all be similar, but most likely won't be the same. You can get a free credit report from each of the three agencies every year. You will have to pay for your FICO score, unless you want to enroll in some kind of credit monitoring program (which costs money). There are probably some 'free trials', where if you cancel before a certain time you don't get charged. I agree with what others have said -- unless the dealership is offering a very low rate (0%, 0.9%, etc.), go to your bank or credit union and get pre-approved. It will probably be a better rate and gives you bargaining power because the dealership can not do funny things with the numbers and then recoup the 'discount' in the financing. Sarah......... |

You can get your fico score at myfico.com. They are very sneaky though. The score they give you is NOT the same score they give out to their real customers, the banks, insurance companies, employers etc. They won't tell you the real score or how they have determined your score. If you have any questions about your credit reports or fico scores go to ClarkHoward.com Home: Save More, Spend Less and Avoid Rip-Offs on clarkhoward.com . They have links and explanations. |
