This has been on my mind for awhile and thought I would bring it here for some thoughts or views. I cannot believe that a baseball team would offer someone 140 million dollars to play baseball. While I am a Native New Yorker I am not a Yankee fan at all. It literally makes me so sick to think of where that money could be better spend... There is no way in the world anyone could ever convince me that a single human being a man has that much talent that he is worth that kind of money.. Where are our standards, what does this teach young boys who someday want to grow up and become a professional baseball player..I guess its personal for me and my ds Thomas who is a huge Boston Red Sox fan when they got Johnny Damom couple of years back.. My son;s heart was broken, he idiolized this man.. Me too I love his talent, I loved his rebel ways of long hair and all. But I guess in the end he went for the money.. The Red Sox and the Yankees hated each other in baseball anyway..I am sorry perhaps I am wrong, but no one person deserves that kind of money. I guess also I must understand and realize to the Yankees its totally all about winning.. Which is wonderful however we cannot all win, for instance my son;s girlfriend Katie plays for our High School lacrosse team, there is a dad who has 2 daughters on the team, it is so hard to go and watch Katie play cause this Dad is plain nuts, he screams so loud at his girls , he carrys the stick and walks up and down the entire field, he does not stay still, he curses, he has been removed so many times. I feel so bad for those girls, yes it so nice to see your childs team win, but there will always be a winner and there will always be a loser, if you cannot fully accept that, then you should not play the game... Proud of our Boston Red Sox all the way..... Peace... Catherine

The Red Sox are great. Yankees always have to do something to get back up there because right now they suck. When they made Johnnie cut his hair that was rediculious. Cant stand the yankee`s Red Sox fan all the way. nancy

truble I agree with you with the ticket sales being crazy and the fans buying , I also agree that there are other teams who pay their players very extremely high salaries. However hands down The Yankees are far the worst and even more to the fact about their best played A-Rod who is getting over 252.00 million over a 10 year period. There are so many countless over paid professional sports players today. When you truly think about it our newly elected president Barack Obama will make a salary of 440.000 per year omg. I think his job is way more important and alot harder then our professional sports players. Iff they offer CC Sababthia 140.OO million where will it end... Catherine

It's not just the fans. It's the companies that pay huge amounts to sponsor the teams, and it's also the cities/counties where the venues are built and maintained. Many build FOR the team and then give them huge tax incentives. Eventually the newness wears off and the team stomps their feet wanting additions or upgrades and threatens to go somewhere else if they don't get what they want. And they will get it elsewhere. There is so much more than just the fans keeping this subsidized charity going for the owners. dl |

Most people are surprised when they hear we live in New York and also that we are not a Yankee or a Met fan.. They are so surprised when we tell them we love the Boston Red Sox.. To us personally its totally all about winning the Yankee's saldy have to prove to all that they are the best and if it means spending outragous money to obtain the best most talented players out there , then its what they will do. I agree when Johnny Damon left and had to cut his hair and shave his beard and leave the Red Sox , it was truly sad, however my ds who totally believed in Johnny Damon and never ever thought he would lost he favorite player to the Yankee's anything is possible... I work as a Kindergarten para in my school district and I have this little boy who in the beginning of the school year, he came to school dressed in a Yankee shirt, which is fine, you love your team, you should support your team. However he was wearing the hat and the shirt alot and so after about 2 weeks of being together everyday. I bent down and said you know Louis me and my family and especially my son we love the Red Sox, to which he turned to me and said me and my dad think they suck???? I was like omg a five year saying this....Needless to say I do not mention the Yankee's nor Redsox . Of course I told the teacher and she felt it necessary to address the parents because he said the word suck.. Naturally the Dad said jokingly. he really said that, yeah like you did not say it enough times in front of him, where do you think you heard of the word. I know this got off topic sorry for that, but I was just trying to prove what means a Owner will go to , too have the best of the best. On a personal note to any Yankee fans my ds Thomas always will say he does like Derek Jeter and thinks he is a wonderful player and a decent honest good guy... All the way... Red Sox fans here as well.... Peace... Catherine

I think it's nuts that any sports figure gets paid that kind of money to play a GAME. In my mind, I could see a max of $1 million a year for not more than that (and that is still too much if you ask me). Funny thing is, no one would want to play for that LOL I would LOVE to get paid as much as a "lower earner" on a sports team for playing a game for part of the year. Oh, I hurt myself...that's okay, we pay you anyway. Must be nice...

Companies can subsidize all they want, but they do it as advertising. If the fans boycott and stay away, that money's going to dry up, as are the ridiculous salaries. Why should Paul Allen have to release his financials to anyone? I don't understand that logic. I agree, that way too many towns and cities are giving way to much to sports teams, which are nothing more than private enterprises. Why are they being subsidized by the public that way? The Richmond Braves skipped town here when Richmond and Virginia refused to build them and bigger and better stadium. Ta ta boys, don't let the door hit you in the butt on the way out. Richmond sure doesn't subsidize my company's offices -- why should it subsidize the Braves which enormous stadium, fields and/or tax breaks? Remember the baseball strike and the fans that swore they'd never go back? I think they're back.
