Do you Neti?

I recently started using the Neti pot. At first I hated it.. I think I did it wrong, it felt like water was coming out of every hole in my head!
I finally got my head tilt down pat now YAY and it is acutally slightly enjoyable.

If you do Neti, do you do it daily? Right now I am having some sinus problems so I am aiming for twice a day to help push all the bad stuff out as fast as possible.

Yes, but only if I am getting a cold. It certainly takes practice to get the technique down. I think it does help!

I have not actually searched or anything.

Susiecat I am glad you opened this thread.
I tried the neti pot one time, thought I was drowning myself and said nope, not for me.
But you give me hope that if I get it right it will be ok.
I know Dr. Oz suggests doing it before bed if you often wake up with sinus headaches.

I tried it a couple of times

I think it does work, but sometimes i just don't take the time. I got a good deal at drugstore.com. it is a blue plastic one and they often have a bogo for it.

We love our Neti pots (our household). I ordered ours online and they are ceramic. It does take practice in the beginning in order to perfect the technique. I use mine about 3 times a week or like another poster stated more often when I'm feel like I'm getting sick.

I put a pot of salted water on the stove and boil it and then hold my head over the pot with a towel draped over my head (burner turned off, of course). Is this the same sort of thing? If so, people have done it for years, haven't they? It really works.

Not really. A neti pot looks a little like a ceramic teapot. You fill it with warm water and mix in salt. Then you literally pour it into a nostril and it comes out the other one. Sounds gross, but a lot of people swear by it.

Whoa! and yikes! That would be like drowning! My dad used to put salt water in a mug and suck it into his nose one nostril at a time. Too much information?! but maybe a cheaper alternative?

I'm sorry but this is one of the grossest things I've ever heard of.....made me sick the last time it came up here too. Gross, gross, gross.

My neti pot was only $11 at drugstore.com and it came with 50(i think) salt packs.

Last year this time I would have agreed with you 100%! Since then I have had such horrible allergies and sinus problems with facial pain that kept me up at nights.

Warm compresses and the neti pot have really helped! You quickly get over the grossness of it the first time it helps you

I use the plastic bottle version but it's the same concept. It's a bottle with a straw inside so you squeeze the water out rather than pour it. I was so afraid to try it -- I'm a big baby when it comes to getting water up my nose but it was fine and it does feel good once you're finished.

I use a Neti pot every few days. It really helps with headaches. I only get a cold maybe once every 2 years, and I think the pot helps. I feel better when I use it.

I love my neti pot, it's saved me (and the entire fam) many $$ in doc visits with our seasonal allergies , also has helped keep cold viruses manageable (as well as religiously using zinc gluconate at the first sign of sniffles) in our home during those seasons.
When I was younger I used to do the salt water snorting up one nostril and then the next, the neti pot makes it much easier.
I know it may sound gross to use a neti pot, but since I got everyone here using it we hardly ever get sinus infections or throat infections from viruses or allergies, and the duration/severity of rhino type viruses has been cut down by at least 50% for us.
Ours is cheapo plastic deal I found at some grocery store a few years back, I think it cost less than $15, I do remember Walgreens having a BOGO deal that I missed out on several years ago, watch this winter for those type of sales. We only have one neti pot, but if I could find them at great prices, I would insist we all have our own indy ones. If you only have one per fam, hot soapy water and/or peroxide are good sanitizers)
You *can* do the same thing w/a shot glass of salt water (I did that for decades) , but the neti pot makes it much easier, and whether they are plastic or ceramic, they can be sanitized in a dishwater or even in hot soapy water in the sink..

Does anybody use something like this?

NeilMed Pharmaceuticals, Makers of Sinus Rinse, NasaFlo Netipot, Nasal Irrigation

NeilMed Pharmaceuticals, Makers of Sinus Rinse, NasaFlo Netipot, Nasal Irrigation

I don't think DH would use a neti pot, but I'm sure he would give a spray a try.

I have the lil blue neti pot from this same company. I have never tried the spray. If your husband does the neti and you tilt your head just right and you have the water at body temp.. you don't feel a thing!

Thanks. I am definitely going to get the pot or the spray for DH.

Now that I think about it -- I sneeze almost every day -- sometimes 5 or 6 times in a row. I wonder if this would help stop the sneezing? Could I have irritants/allergens that cause sneezing?

About a month or 2 ago I started sneezing daily, about 10 times a day spread throughout. No biggie at first but after a while you start to notice. Since doing the neti I think I've sneezed 3 times in 2 weeks.. has really cut it down!

I can understand why you would think it's gross, but honestly, if you are prone to sinus infections or allergies, this is a life saver!

I have one and use it off and on all the time. Love it!

BTW - you can make your own solution mixing salt with baking soda.

The recipe:
~ Carefully clean and rinse a 1-quart jar. Fill the clean jar with tap water or bottled water. You do not need to boil the water.

~ Add one level teaspoon of non-iodized (”pickling”) salt. DO NOT use table salt. Table salt has unwanted additives. You can ask for pickling salt at the grocery store.

~ Add one level teaspoon of baking soda (pure bicarbonate).

~ Stir or shake before each use. Store at room temperature.

After one week pour out any mixture that is left over and make a new recipe.

I think adding the baking soda would be great.. I think it would soften up all that crud inside... hmmmmm

I also wonder if people would be offended with neti pot christmas presents? hahaha
