Great points. My mother bought me an electric skillet made by some good name that I can't remember now, but bought it at WalMart. Cheapest piece of junk ever! All the teflon just starting flaking off with practically no use at all. I didn't realize until fairly recently that there was products made specially for WalMart like that.

Often times, the only difference in the exclusive is the product, model, serial or UPC number. You may have a friend that works at Wal-Mart, but my company's client list reads like a "Who's Who" of major retailers and vendors for said retailers.. I'm pretty sure that I have a little more insight on this than you or your friend (unless of course, your friend was hired for a home office position in Bentonville, AR....).

My friend has nothing to do with it other than she is the reason I go into that store to look around. She has no opinion on this issue and has not provided me with any inside information. And yes other stores have special products made for them but I have NEVER heard as many complaints about their products. I have on the other hand heard and read MANY MANY MANY times about a certain product WalMart sold being a piece of crap that people thought would have been better because it came from a "reputable" company. I am sure you are a very very important person and very very smart about the things you know about. As far as having more insight about things than I do from reading your posts on this and other issues I highly doubt that. As a matter of fact when I read it I laughed so hard I almost choked. No disrespect intended the truth is the truth. You can defend WalMart all you want but the truth is the truth. Cheap in = cheap out. I would rather buy a $100 item somewhere else on 50% discount than pay $20 for a similar item at WalMart! Why? Because intelligence based on research, observations, common sense, and experience have taught me this. Maybe someday I will be as important as you and know as many major retailers and vendors and other important world shaking people as you do. In the meantime I am just a smart person with good sense who speaks the truth.

Thanks for pointing this out, Anna. I don't shop at Walmart, but I wouldn't buy any one-off models there as I believe you're right, they have an increased probability of being under-designed to hit a lower price point. I don't think how a mega-company deals with its worker's comp or employee insurance issues, etc is necessarily indicative of their product pricing, marketing, layaway policies, bathroom cleaning schedules, etc. As such, I don't think anyone's knowledge of one area is relevant to another no matter how much they'd like it to be. ![]() cj/

I rather stick to target I have to agree the merchandise in Walmart is cheap and not worth the cheap prices and also as far as their line of clothes goes they are stinky and not nice at all. I have not shopped in Walmart in a long time for these reasons. I do wonder if Sam Walton the creator of Walmart was alive today how he would feel. I remember reading about him and how many money he made and that he became a billionaire and yet he still lived in a very modest home and still drove around his old red pick-up truck. I admired him for that. Then I remember reading about after he died how greedy his children became when they inherited the money and fortune and the family business. Which when he Sam Walton died each child while they got a ton of money neither are billionaires like their dad.. Again I think Walmart has made their prices so low, that the quality of their items is not really a good deal afterall.. Peace in this holiday season... Catherine

| ||||

Your last statement is right on, Catherine. Cheap things aren't always a good deal. Walmart is shooting for a different client than Target....and they are successful at that. I decided I'm not in their client pool and that's just fine with me. LOL cj/

You are so right, I also remember when I was looking for appliances we went to home depot (or home cheapo as I fondly refer to it) then to the local appliance dealer, he claims home depot gets a lower model of the name brands too.

However, I speak what I KNOW for fact in having dealt w/ the clientele I deal with. Yes, I do know important people. I don't consider myself anymore important than you or anyone else. I noted my company's clientele for the simple purpose of illustrating that I actually work with the people and the company that you are so easily trashing. And not only do I work with that company, I work with many more who do business the same way as Wal-Mart. The only difference is: those companies are not as big as Wal-Mart--not yet anyway. By and large all those companies aspire to be as big and as profitable as Wal-Mart. Yeah, I know that you and several others here think I'm a b*tch, and that I'm a "know it all". Frankly, what a member on this message board thinks of me is irrelevant. I know what I know, I am what I am--and the people who are important in my life know me. As is often the case, how things are perceived on a message board are not always reality. So, you (the general you) can think of me how you want. I'm sure of myself, my family and friends love me and that's all that really matters. Thanks and have a good night! OMG! LOL, I just read the comment that the OP left w/ the negative rep. "you love WalMart so much why don't you marry it?" How mature for someone I had assumed was a grown woman. I find the comment so laughable....

So, in closing, I would suggest choosing other stores besides WalMart for items you may want to have and use for a while. Thank you and good night everyone.

I really don't understand the venom some people have towards WalMart. I really don't. WalMart really isn't any different than other major retailers. I took THREE - count 'em, THREE - coffee pots back to Target, one after the other, because they didn't make it past a month in my kitchen. The Circo brand clothes my kids wore didn't last any longer than the WalMart things we bought for them. The few things we owned from Gymbo did hold up much better than either the Target or WalMart clothing, but as messy as my kids were, the Gymbo stuff still got stained and in the end wasn't fit for a garage sale even though it was name brand. If you want to talk cheap... the cookie dough scoop I bought from a school fundraiser for $13 died the first time I used it and I really had no recourse at all. The Oneida brand I bought from WalMart, however, is phenomenal. The pancake turner from Target - the super thin plastic one that I thought would be awesome for my non-stick griddle (purchased at WalMart nine years ago...) turned out to really be too flimsy for me, however, the one I bought at Dollar Tree is absolutely perfect in every way. Go figure! Regarding the WalMart laptops... I have two friends who purchased those and they are still going strong. They love them! And... if you watch Best Buy and Circuit City ads and such you will see that they are carrying virtually identical items made by the same company, but the item number will be one digit off because - gasp - it is a model made specifically for that chain. It is very very rare to see the exact same model made for more than one store. One big reason for this is that stores that advertise that they'll price match the *exact* item don't want to be caught carrying the *exact* item as their competitor, so they insist on a small difference between otherwise identical things. I had glassware purchased from Dillards that died within my first year of marriage 20 years ago... and some things from Alco that are still going strong. Did you know that many of the grocery items that are in WalMart under the Great Value brand are made in the same places as the name brands? They've just slapped a Great Value label on them. The same is true for many Aldi products. I understand that there are times that a company will make a lesser-quality item with the intent of retailing those out through discount chain stores... but I'd wager that the same quality of product is going to appear in *any* discount chain. I'll bet a Black and Decker iron from WalMart is of equal quality to the one in Target or KMart. I think you have to bump up to a sewing store to get your hands on a high quality iron. And then the question becomes whether you iron enough to justify spending $200 on a very high quality iron.... or if you iron so little that the $5 one from WalMart is sufficient. None of these things, IMHO, make WalMart *bad*. They just may not be your best choice for certain things. Maybe not even for *many* things, depending on your income level or specific needs. One thing I have noticed, living in a rural area where wages aren't what you see on the coasts, is that WalMart allows 'us' to acquire things that are considered standard in other parts of the country at prices that we can afford. We may not have 'top of the line'... but from WalMart, we can get 'sufficient.' For instance, someone who lives in an area where people pay $500,000 for 30 year old one bedroom homes probably thinks nothing of dropping $1,500 on a laptop from Dell. Dell certainly doesn't price things differently for people in different regions of the country to allow those of us living in less-affluent areas to be able to afford their product. So... for someone living in an area where the average household income is $32K/year, the ability to buy a laptop at WalMart for $298 a couple of years ago was something that was very helpful. You can say, "Well, they ran all the mom and pop computer stores out of town!" Perhaps. But the mom and pop stores would never have sold enough volume to allow them to offer a price the Average Joe could have afforded. Is WalMart perfect? No way. Am I a big believer in small businesses and the service that often comes with them? You betcha. But I also think there is definitely a place for WalMart in our economy, and that it's very short-sighted to demonize them and presume all the other businesses don't do the exact same things WalMart does... or that every mom or pop who runs a mom and pop shop is honest and decent. |

| wowitsdark, I completely agree with you! Thank you for expressing my thoughts so precisely, you saved me a lot of typing. (LOL) Lack of quality is the main reason I very rarely shop at Sears anymore. I all but stopped shopping there nearly 14-yrs ago when the non-stick coating in my roasting pan washed right down the drain as I was rinsing out (after very few uses). It simply slid out of the pan along with the water and went right down the garbage disposal drain. There were the numerous articles of women's clothing that either shrunk and/or became mis-shapen (even when following the washing instructions on the labels), amongst many other inferior products. Most costly, though, was our Whirlpool washer's transmission that had to be replaced less than 2 months after the warranty expired.I've also bought garbage from Kmart and Target in the past. With Kmart, I basically learned to stay away from GE, RCA, Magnavox, and/or anything made by Thompson Consumer Electronics. From Target, I bought my junky 6 slice Oster toaster oven that only holds 4 pieces of bread. The wires are so far apart on the rack that the toast easily slips through them if you're not careful. Yeh, it still works. But, sometimes I swear I see it spark inside when I pop the button up to turn the toaster off, or if I unplug it while the oven feature is on (which is the only way to turn it off if your food gets done before the timer shuts it off). It kind of scares me, so I keep it unplugged when it's not in use. But, the biggest piece of cr@p I bought at Target that really upset me was the Bissell Little Green Machine with the water heating feature and rotating brush. Sadly though, I had it over a year before I ever took it out of the box, therefore the warranty had expired before I ever used it. The very first time I used it, it leaked water from the very bottom of the machine. Not from the shampoo canister, which was properly in place, but from the seam on the bottom of the machine itself. Sorry Anna, I know how much you like Fashion Bug, but..... I use to work there and they do sell quite a bit of low quality clothing. They have some nice (and really cute) stuff, too. But, just like any other store, you need to inspect the quality of each item before you decide to purchase it. Most of costume jewelry and most of the shoes (except the Sketcher's & Ked's) are very low quality. The shoes have no arch support, let alone decent cushioning (if any). Quite honestly, most of their clothes are no better quality than WM's clothing. It's just that more often they have much cuter styles than WM. Plus, some of FB's clothing is just soooooo over priced, that even when it's on sale it's still too high IMO. I remember about 2-yrs ago they had a thin vinyl jacket (plus size, I think) that was regularly priced around $70!!! It came in both white and black and had some little metal studs on it around the bottom, if I recall correctly. It was thin vinyl with a very thin lining, nothing very fancy. If there's a standard for vinyl jackets, I'm sure this one was on the lower end. All I could think of when I was taking them out to the floor was, "Who in their right mind would pay that much for this jacket? Even at 1/2 price, they'd have to be insane!" I had (and still have) a vinyl jacket that I'd bought at WM prior to this for $15 (reg. price). The quality is just a tad better than the one FB was trying to sell for $70! I bought the vinyl jacket at WM because, at that time, I would occasionally go out to the club and didn't want to risk my leather jacket getting stolen off the back of my chair. The vinyl one was cheap enough that I wouldn't have been very upset if something happened to it. I had just lost a lot of weight when I worked at FB, so I really needed a new wardrobe and bought a TON of clothes there. As a matter of fact, I still shop there occasionally.... But, usually just when they send me a good coupon. ![]() Anyway, I guess the moral of the story is that you can find low quality products at any major retail chain. That's the American way (apparently). ![]() .

LOL at "MsMiser"'s post (who is she? I can never figure these things out). But anyways, I wouldn't buy a vinyl coat....or vinyl shoes...or a vinyl handbag...at WalMart or Fashion Bug or Target or Macys. I would not buy vinyl period. Vinyl is icky to me; wouldn't be caught dead in it. I don't think I'd buy a leather coat, shoes, or handbag at WM or FashionBug either. That said, there's no way I'd buy Coach either! cj/

Ms Miser I agree with you that you have to look at each item carefully. And the shoes at Fashion Bug suck they are as bad as the ones at Payless Shoes. They are cheaply made and ill fitting. And you are right about Fashion Bug clothes they are not that great. Although many of them are pretty well made I shop at a lot of clothing stores and believe me for the "regular" priced (meaning not designer or what would be considered "high" quality) they are pretty good. The main reason I have shopped there is the cute clothes in bigger sizes. The other stores that sell Plus clothes have Old Lady clothes, Lane Bryant included. I do think if you shop the sales and use coupons it's worth it. I have Fashion Bug clothes last me for a couple of years and I have sold my whole wardrobe after wearing it for a year. I have had jackets and coats (NO vinyl LOL) that lasted two years that I sold on craigslist for almost what I paid for them. I don't know maybe it's because I wash them in cold water and hang dry the tops so they still look new and last much longer. As far as WalMart I am sorry I don't mean to insult anyone however the things I see that people I know buy there are lower quality than what I see coming from other stores. I have not just picked WalMart out a hat to "hate" there are lots of reasons to have negative feelings about them. When I walk through the store I see with my own eyes and handle with my own hands the items to see what the quality is. And again I am not trying to insult people when I walk into a WalMart I see the people who shop there I hear them speaking and the things they say. I hear what they say to their kids. I see how they treat the merchandise. I feel out of place this store was not made for me and the items here are not targeted to me. WalMart has done this to themselves. I remember years ago (we have mentioned this on this board before) when they used "Made in the USA" as their motto and used American suppliers and treated their employees well. Those days are gone and I believe Mr Walton would be turning over in his grave to see the cheaply made foreign products, to hear what people say about his store, and about how the employees are treated. The fact of the matter is that WalMart is a behemoth corporation and they have shown in many ways that their main concern is obtaining product and staffing at the lowest cost possible to keep the profit margin as high as possible.

just as an aside, I have visited 2 walmarts, 1 in an extremely depressed nearby city where I live , and one while visiting my in laws in an "upscale" florida retirement community. I would note that cleanliness, clientele and variety of merchandise varied SIGNIFICANTLY... in each store. This may explain our differences here. Just a thought.

I am a vendor, one of the stores I service is Walmart. My company does make different items exclusive to certain stores, not just for Walmart but also for other stores. Some of the items in Walmart are lower in quality so they can be sold for a cheaper price than you might find in one of our other accounts in a different store, some are not, some are higher in quality just exclusive to Walmart. My company does not make appliances or electronics or anything like that so I know nothing about those items, but for the items we do sell, we do have SOME different items exclusive just to Walmart.

(LOL)I guess maybe since I grew up in a poor home (wearing sock mittens, bread bag rain caps and such, LOL), I'm still humble enough that I can allow myself to wear a vinyl/pleather jacket when I feel it would be a better alternative for a particular situation. Diversity and adaptability are strengths. So, go on and judge me over a vinyl/pleather jacket if you feel you must, I can take it. But honestly, as far as vinyl/pleather jackets go, it's pretty decent. It can pass as leather as long as no one is inspecting it up close. (LOL) And like I said, I bought it when I was going out to the club (which is dimly lit) because I didn't want to risk someone stealing my leather jacket off the back of my seat. If they stole the vinyl/pleather jacket, it would be no big loss.BTW, I bought my leather jackets at Wilsons Leather. Are there any non-PETA people here opposed to shopping at Wilsons Leather? (LOL) Everything I've bought from them so far has been excellent quality. And I've gotten some really awesome bargains from them, too. As far as WM goes..... I understand why some people feel the way they do about WM, and even about WM's "clientele". However, I really don't like to feel that I am being lumped into that category just because I shop there. (I like to think I'm in a class all my own. ) Our income forces us to shop there. But, even if we were in a higher income bracket, I still wouldn't waste money. I am fully capable and aware enough to recognize the differences between high quality, low quality, and the various grades in between..... in products, in foods, in services, and also in people. Therefore, I decide my purchases with regards to quality, price and value.... no matter where I'm shopping..

The Wal-Mart Bingo Game --well, you can find those people at just about every store around town -- I've seen those type at Target, Sears, Best Buy, the shopping malls. If you don't like Wal-Mart, don't go to Wal-Mart. But for those who go to Wal-Mart to save $$ on groceries, then don't knock it. It's none of your business. And don't make fun of people who do go there. Some of you act like you're too good to go to Wal-Mart. I guess you don't go to Goodwill either. |

It seems like the innuendo here is only those with no class and who cannot afford to shop anywhere else go to Wal-Mart. (i.e the BINGO Card) Not true. I once saw people in front of me swipe a Black AMEX card. As an avid Wal-Mart customer - That BINGO card, to me at least, is very insulting. As far as quality, I see no difference than going to Target or K-Mart for example. It's illogical to believe that you are going to get the same quality merchandise, especially clothes, at Wal-Mart as you do at Macy's or Dillards. But for everyday things Wal-mart is great. I honestly do not see why all the bitterness towards Wal-Mart. |

I do shop at Goodwill. Every week. My reasons for not shopping at Walmart are my principles. I won't get into it, because we could argue all day and all night. Honestly, as far as groceries go, I save more money shopping at other stores. I use a lot of coupons and shop wisely. Everyone has their own way to shop, and what works for them is great. To each his own said the old lady who kissed the cow. As far as the bingo game goes, I thought it was funny. But, then, I happen to have a warped sense of humor. There are a few on there that I find in poor taste...that's one reason why I didn't post it. And who knows? Maybe I fit into some of the catagories. I guess you'll never know. ETA Pardon my ignorance, but what's a black AMEX card? |

But I feel that *everyone* is too good to go to Wal-Mart. I'd like nothing better than for someone other store(s) to be *true* competition to them, so that there would be options for everyone who truly rely on their prices to make ends meet. I go to the Goodwill Store occasionally, but I like the Salvation Army Store (their competition around here) even more. BTW, I found the BINGO card insulting, as well. And I don't even go there.
