My 8 year old CAT has a toothache, HELP!

The poor baby is in pain and it's breaking my heart but I can't afford to take him to the vet

He is VERY GROUCHY and rubbing one side of his mouth and making weird moaning/growling sounds. I keep valerian root capsules in the house for me and I also know it works on cats, so I opened up a capsule and poured the powder on the box he is sitting on and he licked most of it up. I HOPE that calms him and his tooth down.

What else can I do?? I know animals lose teeth as they get older. Will his bad tooth eventually fall out?!?

I've had animals all my life, but I've never seen one with a toothache!

I just did a web search and it says that cavities in cats are usually under the gum and if it is not taken care of the cat may become extremelt thin and lose his hair and I am sure that leads to worse things. Have you tried calling a animal rescue? We have a rescue in the neighborhood and the lady has an agreement with the vet and for a flat fee per month her cats are all taken care of. Maybe a rescue near you has this agreement and will take your cat to the vet for you.
While I can't tell you and wouldn't presume to tell you what to do it seemss like this problem will intensify without treatment and cost you a bundle in the end.

I can call the rescue tomorrow morning. The Vet wouldn't be open today anyway. Even cats get toothaches on weekends when vets offices are closed.

He licked up the valerian powder and for right now he seems pretty pain free . He's not attacking me every time I move. He even gave me some love a few minutes ago. I'm glad to have eased his pain for now.
I will call tomorrow though!

Do see if you can get into your vet. The painful tooth could be delivering bacteria into the bloodstream, damaging the organs. If abcessed, a pet could even loose an eye. Call your vet and find out if they are an AAHA accredited hospital. They may be able to help you out (if you qualify) with this fund:

AAHA Helping Pets Fund

Some hospitals have their own funds as well, so ask about that. Another option is Care Credit which will give you a no interest line of credit to be paid montly for a speicified time frame.
