It's so sad to know that these type things happen. However, it is good to know that companies do inform their customers when they bring the appilances. We purchased a new stove from Sears within the last month. When they brought the new stove, it is freestanding, the delivery guys asked if we had any small children (we don't) but they went on to tell us that if we did have small children ever around that there was a kit included in with the stove that we could have it mounted to the floor or wall so that it would not tip over onto small children if they were to climb onto the oven with the door open. That we needed to have this done if there were going to be small children around.

Wow. You would think that if three children had used the dresser previously with no problems, number four wouldn't have been able to turn it over. I guess that strapping is something to consider, especially if your child's a climber.

I saw the same thing 13 years ago when I was pregnant with my first. We strapped every dresser, Entertainment center, big tv's and have had it that way ever since. My Brother in Laws Nephew was climbing in the drawer of his dresser when it fell over. Luckily it didn't crush him because it was so close to bed the dresser landed on bed.

I've heard of this happening. Thanks for the heads-up.

Just wish the Aunt had heard the dresser fall over.

My daughter's dresser from Pottery Barn Kids came with straps to fasten it to the wall. I haven't done it yet but will do it this weekend. What a sad lesson.

When my oldest ds was three he pulled a dresser with a tv down on top of him. He had a nasty knot across his forehead but luckily x-rays and CT were clear. The worst part was that we had just bought the hardware to anchor the dresser, but hadn't gotten to it yet.

I had all my kids dressers and bookshelves screwed to the walls when they were little. Better safe than sorry. I worked at a furniture store when I was younger and a child pulled a dresser over that they bought from us and it killed him. They didnt blame the store but wanted the furniture picked up. They just couldnt look at it.

The article refers to a dresser and the posters here refer to dressers also. To me a dresser is the piece of bedroom furniture that has a mirror attached. I would likely think the piece of furniture is what I call a chest of drawers which is not nearly as wide as a dresser and has anywhere from 3-5 drawers and much more likely to tip than a dresser is.

A good reminder, and such a heartbreaking story.
