Holey Socks... Sew or Throw?

Maybe someone could recommend some socks that hold up well? My boys are really hard on their socks. I'm off to buy more today since I don't feel like sewing!

Great question!

Are the socks white socks? Do you bleach them?

I'm pretty sure the shelf life of our white socks is shorter than the others because of bleach.

I'm experimenting with less bleaching - now I use vinegar on my white loads more often than bleach - hoping to see less holes!

Until the holes discontinue, I use the nicer (holey) socks for dusting, and the really sorry socks are made into garage rags, or discarded.

I've never darned a sock. My mom used to and I hated the way the darned socks felt on my feet so I refuse to darn them. If it's a white athletic type sock, I'll sometimes save it and use it as a dust rag, otehrwise, in the trash it goes.

I'm a diabetic and worry about my feet so in the trash they go. although I use to have a dog that would play with them - make a big knot and toss it she was a happy camper.

I use Fruit of the Loom (men's style) sometimes Hanes and don't bleach them very often.

It's funny you mention this; My son's have a few socks that have holes. I had planned to mend them but after reading yngsto6's post I may have to rethink that idea

In any case, old socks are great for dusting or cleaning mirrors and windows.

There was a brand that I purchased at Target about a year or so ago - I think it was Hanes. They had yellow hand color at the toe and heels. Anyway, almost every single one of those socks ripped or tore, sometimes while attempting to put them on! I know they were defective or of really bad quality.

I use the thicker old ones for some cleaning, and the thick white ones for waxing the car/truck.

Try the brand Gold Toe. They will be a little more expensive, but hold up much better. I get them at JC Penney when they have a rebate to spend something like $30, get $10 back.

I don't know if this guarantee is still true, but I used to buy my son's socks at the Champ's sports store at the mall and they would replace them if they got ripped. They weren't that much more expensive and worth it with the guarantee. I haven't bought from there in several years so not sure if they still have this policy.

Where are they getting holes? If it's in the toes....be sure they are keeping their toenails clipped. It helps, really!

I agree that darning them leaves you with an uncomfortable lump., Of course in the old days that was expected. My mother darned socks ( and there was an uncomfortable lump) and she also turned the collar of dress shirts when the collar frayed. How she did that I still can't figure out.

I am not big on extra work that results in discomfort.....so Dh uses them to clean/dust the inside of the car and then throws them away. I suppose I could wash them......NAH!!!!

I totally agree with this. My mom tried it once too.

We have had great success with the Gold Toe brand; they wear like iron. Kohl's has deals on them too.

My son used to wear holes in all of his socks until I tried the expensive Adidas socks from Kohls. Now he just loses them.

Nope, I toss them!

My boys are truly hard on socks. About 3 years ago I started trying different brands and found that the Under Armour socks are really durable. I was buying them at Dicks Sporting Goods for $12.99 for 3 pairs, until I found that Marshalls carries them for $6.99. As another OP, it's not holes that I'm replacing now, it's because they lose one or they lend them to friends when their over!

We toss them....because usually it isn't just a hole in a perfectly good sock, it is usually a hole in a worn area as well, so sewing just wouldn't help.

We do, though, keep clothing longer than most people, and we do get all very cheaply or at Goodwill. We look nice, but I don't like to spend a large part of the budget on clothes.

When my folks grew up, you fixed everything-- you never just threw away appliances or shoes, or clothes. When I was a kid we would go to the shoe repair person to put on new heels. I don't even know where there would be such a person anymore.

Wink

For me personally I say throw them out, I am not good at sewing at all. I agree with white socks I do soak them overnite in bleach and after something the bleach does start to tear away at the material. However if you do not use bleach with white socks, they become so yucky. Peace. Catherine

I agree
Rough or long toe nails can wear holes in the toes.

Something else--I bring them to the free box and put them in. The homeless that hang out there act like old socks are gold. Yes I do bring them and my husband and I always wonder why they can't skip one pack of cigarettes to buy a bag of socks.

Get Gold Toe ones.
I got some for my dh in 1999 and they are still going strong, with no holes!

My kids lose socks more than getting holes in them. So I do buy them the cheap ones. I keep asking them if they eat their socks when they take them off

I'd throw them out. I love the look and feel of brand new white socks! They don't stay that way for long though which is a shame. ~Lisa

Your child will wear holes in the bottoms of their socks if they're wearing them around the house.

I remember reading somewhere that is is actually cheaper to wear a new pair of socks every day that is it to smoke!

Throw those holey socks in the bin for the homeless or the garbage bin and treat your feet to some new fluffy socks!

Gold Toe seems to hold up best for my boys (ages 5 & 8).

I also have some Hanes 'premium' socks that I got on clearance 75% off at Target. They don't hold up as well as the Gold Toe, but they were super cheap so I don't mind.

My kids wear out their socks the most on the neighbor's trampoline. We just throw away the one with the hold and if the 'mate' isn't hole-y, we put it in a basket with other mismatched socks. Usually I can make a few pairs out of the mismatched basket.
