What do you wear to church?

I guess I'm old school, but I'm appalled at what both adults and kids wear to church these days (I don't go very often, I must admit ). I don't wear a dress or anything, but I do wear nice pants and a top.....and comb my hair. I guess I think it just shows respect to dress nicely....and at that, I'm soooooo much more laid back and casual about dress than my mother.

What do you wear if/when you attend church? What do you think is appropriate attire for church? Or does it not matter....just being there is enough.

I usually wear a skirt or dress pants with a nice top and heels. Sometimes in the summer, I'll wear a sundress with sandals, but more often than not, I err on the dressier side.

I agree about what kids wear. My teenage daughter is always complaining that I make her dress up, and kids are wearing jeans and whatnot to church. I just think it's dissrespectful.

Church is not about what you wear. I grew up in a church that thought it was imperative women wear skirts and it just made the teenagers(myself included) what to pull away from the church.

Our church now is wonderful. Their philosohy is to wear what you are comfortable wearing. If everyone is in dresses and suit and someone comes to visit and has only jeans to wear they may never return because they feel so out of place. At the same time if you want to wear a dress you don't feel out of place because some do.

Church isn't a place you go to put on a pretty front by wearing dressy clothes,it is where you go to worship and as long as we are doing that with the right heart and your clothes are tasteful that is what really matters to God!

Would you rather have the teens at church hear good messages that affect how they live their lives or make them not want to even be there because they are forced into wearing dressy clothing?

I used to wear dresses all the time. Now I do more in the summer, but in the winter, I tend to wear slacks and a sweater. My kids were jeans some. I make my son wear a collared shirt and not a T-shirt though.

This vocalizes how I feel. If I can get my sons to go to church by allowing them to be physically comfortable and not feeling 'geeky', then I'm happy.

Myself, I wear a nice blouse and slacks year round. Basically work clothes. My husband wears Dockers and a polo shirt. I haven't worn a dress in years... anywhere! Mainly because the hemlines that are currently *in* do not look well on me. I don't want to show off my varicose veins and I don't want to wear panty hose to hide them! Heh.

ITA

I grew up in a church where what you wore mattered. Now we just wear whatever, I'm usually in a dress or skirt, but just because it is personal preference.

I am ashamed to say I have not gone to church since Easter 2006. The church is in town and I guess I am too lazy after working all week to get up so early and get dressed and go to church. When I do go I wear work type clothes a little better than I would wear on the street to go shopping or something. However I agree with the others who say it's more important how you act than what you wear.
I am amazed that the tiny town we live in has at least seven churches and NOT ONE is Catholic. I guess I am a minority here.

When I grew up, I had 2 dresses to wear to church.Every Sunday I alternated between the 2 dresses.Nobody ever commented about me wearing the same dress all the time.Everybody wore dresses ,so it was either wear the same dress or wear jeans and a shirt. I would have felt uncomfortable wearing jeans.

I usually wear slacks and a sweater or a dress.

I know people dress so much more casually now and it bothers me a bit. I understand the whole "Its better for them to be there in jeans then not at all." argument. But I just feel like some environments require proper dress, like a wedding or a courtroom or a place of worship. It is just about respect.

My DD and I wear dresses or skirts to church. DS and DH wear dress slacks with a dress shirt. DH wears a tie and sportcoat in winter. DS wears a tie at Christmas and Easter.
I think it's all about showing respect. I don't "get" my children to wear what they wear. DD and DS know what we expect them to wear and that's what they wear. It's not uncomfortable to wear dress clothing, I feel it's just an excuse when someone says that.

Our family is totally casual about church attire. At our church, anything goes. What I do find disrespectful is clothing that reveals too much, other than that it's "come just as you are".

I think dressing respectfully for church (around here) means that you're wearing clean, modest clothes (without offensive graphics), your hands and face are clean, and your hair is well-groomed. I'm pretty comfortable with that standard.

From what I gather for the most part (with some exceptions here), it seems that the people who go less often seem to have a higher standard for what should be worn if they do attend.

I wear jeans almost every week because I "teach" the 18 - 30 month old class and I get down on the floor, go out on the playground and often have one on my hip. We have everything from fancy dresses & suits to shorts & flip flops at our church ~ I love it!!

Count me as an exception. Church is an every Sunday morning and evening affair at our house.

Touche!

But actually I don't think that's what it is because my thoughts on respectful dress/attire apply to more than just church. For example, I could wear jeans to work everyday, but I do not on days when I have important meetings or am interviewing people.....and I never wear sneakers to work, though I could and many do.

My boys' high school has a dress code that includes jacket, shirt and tie. They are taught that the dress code shows respect for themselves, their classmates and instructors, and the school. I agree.

We go to church every Sunday, I wear casual pants and a cotton type shirt and tennis shoes, DD wears jeans, t-shirt/shirt/sweater and tennis shoes, DH wears casual pants and shirt and shoes. Sometimes DD will dress up. Our Pastor flat out tells people it does not matter what you wear or how you look, just come. Many people wear jeans. I would have to say it only the old people dress up, but even some of the old people wear jeans. We live in a farming and military community though, so that might make a difference.

Wink

We all wear whatever is comfortable, I personally think that God just loves having you in his home and what matters more is not what you are wearing, but that to come to church to be there and worship and pray.I am dressed up everyday for work, there I have no choice, literally we do not. First off our school principal Dr.C looks like she comes straight out of a hair salon and a fashion store. She is so professionally dressed to the max. She does not allow any jeans or sweats or sneakers. So when I can dress comfortable I am all for it... Peace.. Catherine
