Spin off: What do you consider the South?

The other post about racism got me thinking? What do you consider part of the South? To me it is anything from Virginia south to Florida and West to Louisiana and parts of Texas. I consider Ky and TN part of the south but not Arkansas or Kansas they would be what I call Mid West. The same for OK.

When I hear people talk about Arkansas and Kansas I think that's not South that is Mid West. So some of the traditions/customs that people call southern there aren't really southern they are mid western or maybe Southern mid western but not South Southern to me lol.

So I am curious am I the only one who thinks this way?

When I think of "The South" I think of the states that border the Gulf. The other Southern states I think of as South Western.

I personally don't consider any state north of the Gulf Coast States as South. But I guess if you live in the North, then everybody lives in the South

For some reason I can't get it in my head that Florida is a Southern state.. I mean a traditional southern state, KWIM? I can't ever imagine Scarlett O'Hara saying.. "Oh Rhett, let's retire to Florida"

Actually more of Florida is true south than what you probably think. Where I am from in Florida we all had atleast 5 acres of land and were in the Cattle or Agriculture field. We did not have many tourist in our area and much of Florida is like that. A lot of people don't understand that Florida is a huge state and there is much more to it than Disney and beaches.

South is anything south of the Mason-Dixon line.
Or south of the Ohio River

Being from NJ, but living in GA now, I would consider the south: North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, West Virginia, and Tennessee. I don't know why, but I've never really considered Virginia, Arkansas, Florida, or Kentucky true Southern states, but I'm probably wrong. I put Texas in a category with Arizona and New Mexico...the Southwest. ~Lisa

I don't understand why anyone would say Kansas is a southern state. If it is then so would Missouri and Oklahoma since Kansas is north of OK and west of MO.
Yes, I consider AR to be a southern state.

GA, FL, both Carolinas, LA and Mississippi. I guess I never thought where KY, TN and bothe Virginias fit in the map. Midwest is MI, OH, Il. IN and WI. Everything else is SouthWest until you get to WA, OR and CA the Pacific coast.

Dang it now I have to refigure out the map in my head.

I have some online friends from Kansas and they even consider themselves Southerners. Most of them even have Southern-ish accents and cook like us Deep Southers.

Anything below the Mason Dixon line is considered the south in my book.
