Is there something you make/bake every season that everyone expects to receive?

My whole family expects me to make apple pie jam for the holidays - I generally pass out many batches worth. If I don't make it, I feel like I broke tradition, and some people actually act as if they are disappointed! Many even give back the jars once they're clean and inquire about when it might be filled for them again.

Anyone else? What's your traditional holiday dish/specialty that you make for everyone this time of year?

I make sweet potato candy for my brothers and nephews. it is just thick vanilla icing rolled in cinnamon. This year I am going to make it out of chocolate icing as a extra treat.

For the holidays I'm always expected to make the pumpkin pie & cranberry sauce. They are nothing special, but its always...."you are gonna make your pumpkin pie & cranberry sauce right???"....

For parties any other time of the year its taco dip....EVERY FREAKIN PARTY including one next week, they want me to bring taco dip. It is good....don't get me wrong, but I just want to make something else once in awhile!

Do you just use frosting from a can or do you make your own?

Do you roll it in balls?

Interesting that you call it icing and I call it frosting! Just noticed that.

I love fruitcake too it's delicious or horrendous depending on how it's made I bet yours is delicious!

I make fudge and nut brittle. For the brittle I use lots of good nuts not just peanuts. And I make sugar cookies with cream cheese frosting and decorations.

My Mom especially loves my walnut fudge.

I get requests for lots of different things, some of the favorites are: homemade lemon bars, pizelles (italian cookie), peanut butter fudge, and a pumpkin roll w/ cream cheese frosing in the middle.

I used to give every neighbor an assortment of cookies but this year I'm scaling down and just baking for family.

Forgot to add that for my kids, it's just not Christmas without waking up to homemade cinnamon rolls. (I usually bake them the day before and warm them in the oven on Christmas morning).

Hey,
Are ya'll coming on the cooking board and sharing these recipes?

Skye, wasn't it you in the fruitcake thread that said your recipe was featured in a magazine? Love, love, love to hear your tips on making a great cake!

DH's boss did baking in year's past and this year announced that he was going be enjoying out of town company in the weeks leading up to Christmas and would not be baking his gifts this year. Yes, I was disappointed to hear that. It was so nice to be on the receiving end of someone's talents each year!

Hope to see you on the cooking board!

I generally hate fruitcake, but found a recipe from Kahlua years ago that I loved. I made the cake w/raisins and dried cherries and would pour Kahlua over that puppy every day for several weeks, then it would just sit for a few weeks.
Lost the recipe a few years ago, think I might have to look it up online and give it another go after all this fruitcake talk ;-)
Does anyone here make hard sauce for their fruitcake? One of my grannies used to make a hard sauce so strong the fumes from the bowl made my eyes water! ;-)

Every year I make fudge, a couple of different cookie bars, lemon bars (got a lemon tree that gives me more lemons than I know what to do with---2 seasons and one is right now!), chocolate chip cookies, Reindeer poop (peanut, chocolate, chowmein noodles, coconut--I know others call it something different but my kids love this name) and homemade liqueuers--usually Irish Creme and Kahlua--this year both of those and adding peppermint schnapps.

This is just like my recipe but this contains cocoanut. I am going to try to add cocoa to the powdered sugar to see if i get a good chocolate candy. But i will not roll that in the cinnamon.

My grandmother's fudge recipe. And it's not the 'fluff fudge', it's the 'cook till the softball stage' sugary fudge...my dad loves this. Oh and my Christmas cookies. A co-worker tells me every year I should sell them because they are so professional looking. I don't know about that but they certainly don't last long around here!

What do you store the liqueuers in? Could you post the recipes also please?

Each of these recipes call for aging or "seasoning" from 3 to 4 week before they are at their best (though they can actually be imbibed immediately). While in the aging process, I either keep them in gallon jars or half gallon jars (i.e. sun tea jars) or sometimes I actually bottle them immediately in the bottles I will gift them in (add homemade labels later) for the aging process. Both the schnapps and kahlua can be aged in just a colder area (put mine in the garage where it is plenty cold) but the irish creme goes in the fridge. I have purchased my bottles from the company listed below for the last 5 or 6 years. Sometimes I get the 750ml size, but when I am gifting a lot, I get the smaller 375 or 500 ml bottles. Love this site because they don't have a minimum you Have to purchase. They also have lots of other decorative bottles for other types of homemade gifts....

Glass and Plastic Bottles, Jars, Containers, Vials and Bottle Accessories

These are bottles I have used from them:
CLA
CALR
CLA750

I put the recipes on the cooking board here:

Thanks Skye! I saw it over there and it looks *FA*N*T*A*S*T*I*C*!

and I learned a new word in this thread... I had never heard the word imbibed before. Had to look it up!

Every little bit of education helps huh?
