Extended family and Christmas gifts?

I'm just curious how far people go into their extended family with gifts?

We only go as far as nieces and nephews. We do not buy for any of our siblings, just their kids. So, besides our own kids, parents, and grandparents, the nieces and nephews are the furtherest "extended" family.

We go TOO far but I'm stuck. They give to us and would be VERY hurt if we dropped them. I have to shop sales all year long because I could never afford Christmas if I waited until December to buy gifts. The good part is that we get nice gifts in return and opening up all our presents from the extended family is FUN! I think Christmas has become too commercial but opening up all those presents is FUN so I still do it. LOL.

Usually we buy for our parents, siblings, nieces, nephews, each other and our kids. This year we are just buying for our kids and my niece and nephew. Moving out of state right before Christmas sure changes the dynamic. I just don't have the time to shop for everyone plus do everything for the move.

We buy for our kids, nieces, and nephews, and 4 little cousins that I buy small gifts for. This year I found toys marked down 75% for them at Target and ended up spending less then $5 on each for a nice gift. If I didn't find a good deal I would not buy that year. It is not something they expect just a little bonus.

My immediate family and my in laws and my nieces. That is Mom, sisters, brother, their spouses and children and MIL and FIL and their daughters and husbands and kids. My family is 650 miles away so I stuff the boxes with gifts and my yummy homemade goodies.

This has been a tough year so we are only buying for MIL and FIL. DH and I and DD and SIL are not exchanging this year.

It feels a little sad not to be doing much "Christmas shopping" on the one hand and on the other hand, it's kind of nice not to have the stress of "Christmas shopping"

Awww....that feels a little sad to me, too! Can you do something instead....like bake, knit, sew, craft, or do a photo album/scrap book or something?

We do my old maid aunt because we are all she has left now that she and my mom don't talk, we do my mom because we are all that she has -- usually handmade, my DH's siblings and spouses draw names between them and our children draw names from their cousins grown and ungrown. There are no cousins on my side of the family.

DH's mom is widowed, downsized her home recently, and wants nothing and so she joins in with her grown children's gift exchange/drawing. The kids' other grandparents (my dad and stepmom) always give the kids money but don't want anything in return so we honor that.

My only brother always comes here for Christmas and we don't exchange but we do put a group gift of See's candy or something else like that to share while we play games, or whatever... FOOD!

We have a small family so we do them all. For DH, Mom, Sister (& BIL, but they are seperated this year so not sure about that one), Brother & SIl. That's it. For me, Mom & stepdad, Sister, Brother & SIL & 2 kids. 12 in total.

Used to do 3 grandmas, but they have all passed on.
