Question What to tip for massage?

I am having a One hour Massage today. I won the Gift certificate at a local Chinese auction. I have never been to this place I am going to before so I am unsure what a Massage costs if you pay. I was thinking I could ask what a 1 hour massage costs and then try and add quick in my head as to what to give for a tip. LOL! is it 20% ?? Anytime I have had massages in the past they were tipped already by my husbands boss(he paid in advance for massage and tip). Someone please tell me what to tip! TIA!

I normally tip 20% if the massage was good-very good. Being that it's the holiday season, I would probably over tip a bit.

If you feel differently, I would adjust the top accordingly.

I think 10 bucks, if it's between $50 and $70.

Around here, Massage therapists make 50% of what the place charges. So if a massage therapist makes $30 on my $60, and I add another 10, that's doing pretty well, IMO.

If it's more than $70, I'd give $15. But more than that, it stops being a gift to me, and becomes something that I helped finance.

Enjoy your massage! Drink lots of water! Not too much beforehand, or you'll have to go (which you already know...)

It's customary (around here anyhow) to tip 20% for a good massage (or any spa service for that matter). However, being the holiday season, it's always nice to add a little extra if you have it.

Enjoy your massage Vicky!

Is it different if the massage person is the owner of the shop? They always say that you don't tip the hairstylist if she is the owner of the salon. I'm referring to a regular tip and not a Christmas bonus gift.

twalters1- I've never heard that before, although I've never had a salon owner do any of my salon services.

Well I am back from my one hour massage. She was a VERY nice lady and the massage was great! I had quite a few tender areas and gritted my teeth some but I would go to her again for sure. I tipped her $10.00. If I had to pay for the massage it would have cost me $50.00 so I gave 20% tip.

I tip 20% on all spa services (including massage). a *good* massage around here at a spa will run you $80-$120 an hour. Those are the places with the good ambiance. If you get one at the gym or a walk in place, they are more like $50 an hour.

The exception to the tipping rule for me is that there is an Aveda salon nearby and they have a sign at the register that says "they deem themselves professionals so please DO NOT TIP". I like that place

Hope it feels good!
