Has anyone gone off of the cholesterol meds...?

...and had their cholesterol stay down?

My doctor keeps on halfing my dosage of Lipitor and he said that in 6 months (if my cholesterol is still stable), he'll completely take me off of them.

I'm just curious if anyone has successfully kept their cholesterol down and HDL's up, after going off of their meds?

I've had high cholesterol since I had it first checked in my early 20's. Difference being that now my HDL's are VERY high.

I've never been on cholesterol meds, but I have a friend who's cholesterol was pretty high, and he wanted to avoid meds. So he dieted.. 3 months the man dieted and only lost 4lbs. His Dr told him, there might be one other way he could avoid meds. Drink 2 glasses of WINE a WEEK.
My friend tried the Dr's advice and after about 3 months went back for another check up and his cholesterol was in the 100s not the 200s anymore.
My friend is a big man.. over 6 feet 300+ pounds with a family history of high cholesterol.

Worth looking into.

Sadly I can't drink wine... It has adverse effects on my head and stomach.

I tried purple grape juice for awhile but no luck.

My cholesterol was high 240 ish, I dieted lost only about 10 pounds but used One a day vitamins with cholesterol plus, took Cholest-off before each meal and took flax and fish oil tablets. In 3 months time it was down 40 points. I didn't have to go on meds, but I still take the vitamins and have to go back soon for another test.

My Mom has been on and off cholesterol meds for along time. Sometimes it stays down and sometimes it's very high. I always encourage her to walk. I exercise a lot and my HDL is high and my LDL is about 140. All you can really do is keep monitoring it. Good luck.

ETA: Woops, I meant my cholesterol is 140. . .don't really know what my LDL is.

I've been on cholesterol meds for about 3 years. South Beach Diet was very successful in reducing my cholesterol and triglycerides, but I was not able to stick to it after a while. It's a great diet, but hard to maintain.

I've been doing Jazzercise now for about 14 months, just had my bloodwork done last month. Guess what, my triglycerides & cholesterol are up again. My doctor has recommended The Insulin Resistance Diet. I have to get my bloodwork done again in 6 months. So far, I've been trying the diet for about 3 weeks. I'm down 2 pounds, which isn't a lot, except typically at this time of year I'm gaining weight. So, we'll see.

I also have drank red wine for a long time. I don't think it has any affect.

So, I'd suggest trying South Beach Diet and see if you can stick to it. It's great if you can.

dh tried going off, eating well, etc. He is average weight for his height, his body just makes extra cholesterol I guess. He could not maintain a low score and went back on the pills.

My doctor told me if you eat poorly the night before the blood work, like microwave popcorn or a steak, the score will be high. Be aware of what you eat 1-3 days before the blood is drawn. This may make the score go up as much as 20-30 points says my general physician.

I did eat microwave popcorn and it happened to me!
