*Warning* Female question/problem inside

I am SO over this. For the past year and a half, I gotten a yeast infection around every 3 -4 weeks. I asked my gyno about it 6 months ago at my checkup and she thought it may have been the same infection, it just didn't get knocked out. She prescribed Diflucan and I have taken that for the ones I have gotten since my appointment. I've been dealing with treatment for thyroid cancer, so I haven't had the time to go back yet. But I REALLY want to figure out what is causing them so I can get them to stop!

Has anyone here had chronic infections? Have you figured out what triggered them?
What doctor would you go to - the gynecologist, family doctor, Endocrinologist (since I am going anyway)?

Thanks for any help you can give!!!

Chris

Do you know that you can give it to your DH? You two could continually pass it back and forth to each other.

Yes - DH was one of my first thoughts, I've researched online and he doesn't have any of the symptoms. I will ask the doctor though when I go.

I can just tell you about myself. I can guarantee I will get one if I am on any type of anitbiotic. After taking it for 2 days like clockwork it is there. Also for some reason if I wear anything but cotton panties for longer then a few hours I will get one.
I also have a friend who if she uses a certain type of laundry soap she gets it, and also if she takes a bath and uses ANY type of bath salts. She has tried several but has given up.

Good luck, I hope you find out the cause soon. They can be torture.

How is your diet? A diet high in sugar can be a contributing factor.

yeast infections can be an indication of a diabetes, so I would suggest getting that checked.

Also, you may want to inquire about getting the infection cultured (the dr will take a tissue/sample of the infection, "grow" it in the lab, see what grows and determine what meds will "kill" the growth. This will also determine if it's a true yeast infection or some other type of condition (vaginosis, allergic type reaction, etc.)

I remember having horrible yeast infections while pregnant--and I was "just" pregnant. I can't imagine having that sort of discomfort on top of dealing w/ cancer treatments. Just thinking about a yeast infection makes me itch!

Your DH may not have signs but still be a carrier and you both could be sharing it.

Good luck

I know this probably doesn't help but you mention thyroid cancer. My niece has battled yeast infections since she was 16 and sexually active and was diagnosed with thyroid cancer at 18. Maybe there is some off the wall link. I just thought it was a weird coincky dink. I have only had 1 my entire life and I feel for you.

I have only ever had one yeast infection. It was horrible and I took the advice of the likes you are getting here, but it just kept coming back. When I went to my regular MD (not my gyn) she did a culture. It turns out it was wasn't yeast, but e-coli. . . .ewwww. she gave me a different script and it cleared right up. FYI it presented in every way like a classic yeast infection. So I second that advice to have a culture and make sure you are really dealing with yeast.

It would be my guess that it's the antibiotics you are on with going thru cancer and stuff. I'm guaranteed if I'm on a good amount of antibiotics then I will get one. When my water broke 9 weeks early with my son, I was on continuous antibiotics for 36 hours and my ob Rx'd me something for a yeast infection, because she said it's almost guaranteed that I'll get one, and she was right!

Wow - thanks for the great advise!
I don't think it is my diet. I don't eat foods high in sugar, but I am thinking of checking my PH levels (I'm ready to try anything)
Detergents, soaps, cotton panties etc...I've looked into all those.
I'll try acidophilus. I've been eating yogurt, but that hasn't seemed to help.
It's not diabetes. I've been tested recently and I'm all good there.
Antibiotics - yes, I know they caused the last couple I've had, but I've only had them twice in the past couple years.
The thyroid cancer - I've read that thyroid problems can cause yeast infections, but my levels were all in line before they found the cancer and I started the wonderful thyroid cancer adventure (a different rant for another day).

I think I'm just going to have to get tested to be sure what's going on. I may send DH to the doctor to be sure it's not him!

When I was on birth control pills I used to get a yeast infection almost as regular and my period.

Now I haven't had a period since the end of Sept. ( NOT PRGGO) took home test plus I had my tubes tied 9yrs ago.

hot flashes, cold chills, headaches. But no period and no pain of any kind.

Oh, and I am only 34 I go to the dr. on the 29th to see what is wrong, I am no idea!

I used to get Yeast infections when on antibiotics too but now whenever I am on antibiotics I eat ONE yogurt a day. I have not gotten a yeast infection since. Everyone else I know that does the same is the same way. Something about the yeast not being able to grow because of the yogurt. I dunno but I just know it works.

Red face

I agree eating one plain cup of yogurt everything is truly a wonder. Also refraining from taking too many hot baths, taking a warm shower instead, also wearing white cotton panties, trying to avoid wearing tight clothing and pantihose I hate them lol. Also if you can try to go to bed without any underwear if you can to air out at nite.I also agree that anitibotics also seem to cause alot of these problems. Personally I do about once a year or so get a bladder infection, the sympthoms are always the same and as women we get more bladder infections then men. With this problem its always good to drink plenty of cranberry juice and with the other problem its also very helpful to drink plenty of water and they so say never to douche, as our bodies have their own way of cleaning themselves and to douche you are pushing more bacteria up where it does not belong. I sincerely hope you feel better and can some relieve soon. Peace and stay safe in this holiday season. Catherine

You might consider including more cinnamon and/or cranberry (100% juice or whole berries) in your diet. Both are very effective at preventing yeast infections, natural, and won't cause any nasty side effects...so why not?! Cinnamon in particular eliminates the bacteria and fungus which cause infections.
