Holland Township man names son after Adolf Hitler

Sunday, December 14, 2008 By DOUGLAS B. BRILL
The Express-Times

HOLLAND TWP. | In a living room decorated with war books, German combat knives and swastikas, a 2-year-old boy, blond and blue-eyed, played with a plastic dinner set.
The boy, asked his name, put down a tiny plate and ran behind his father's leg. He flashed a shy smile but wouldn't answer. Heath Campbell, 35, the boy's father, encouraged him.

"Say Adolf," said Campbell, a Holocaust denier who has three children named for Nazism.
Again, the boy wouldn't answer. It wasn't the first time the name caused hesitation.
Adolf Hitler Campbell -- it's indeed the name on his birth certificate -- turns 3 today, and the Campbell family believes the boy has been mistreated. A local supermarket refused to make a birthday cake with "Adolf Hitler" on it.
The ShopRite in Greenwich Township has also refused to make a cake bearing the name of Campbell's daughter, JoyceLynn Aryan Nation Campbell, who turns 2 in February.
Honszlynn Hinler Jeannie Campbell, a girl named for Schutzstaffel head Heinrich Himmler, turns 1 in April.
"ShopRite can't even make a cake for a 3-year-old," said Deborah Campbell, 25, who is Heath's wife of three years and the mother of the children. "That's sad."
A director for the Anti-Defamation League in Philadelphia applauded the supermarket's decision. An Allentown psychologist said the names would cause problems for the children later in life.

Their other children have horrendous names also, one is named Aryan Nation Campbell. Those poor kids should've started life with some chance of happiness and success. If Keith Richard's daughter changed her name (Dandelion) then these kids hopefully will do the same.

I have a feeling not getting his name on a birthday cake is going to be among the least of that kid's problems.

I think the parents need to slapped. Hard. With a 2x4.

I second that, maybe a 4 x 4, I'm not sure a 2 x 4 is big enough..what morons!

If the couple admires Hitler so much I think they should change their OWN names to Adolf Hitler and Aryan Nation...how sad for those poor little kids. They are probably going to need years of therapy.

I seen this on aol this morning I could not believe my eyes. First off when I saw the picture of the child I thought it was a little girl because of the long hair, however it was not it was the little boy names Adoph Hitler. I am stunned and then to find out that they have 3 children whose names are all related to that monster the evil thing, not human at all. I read that the parents are pro HItler and are very proud to be so. However why in the world if these parents loved this monster sooooooo much did they themselves not change their name. No instead they labled their poor innocent children with those horrible mean names. My heart truly goes out to those children who sadly when they get a bit older will find out whom they are named after. These parents are horrible and truly pathetic. All they are doing is harm to their kids and spreading so much hatred in the world, where we already have enough. On top of this I read that Walmart agreed to do the cake because they also wanted the symbol of Hitler placed on a birhtday cake for a 3 year. What is so ironic is that did not Walmart ban the cds or records of rap songs that contained foul language yet they go ahead and decorate a cake like this for these sick people. Never the less its sad truly sad that people today still idolize these monster..Catherine

I am at a lost... Those kids will suffer, especially Adolf.
I know Adolf Hitler IS just a name, and were the original Adolf named.. John Smith, he would still have done those horrible things. A name doesn't make a person good or bad. I think the town/society shouldn't hold the name against that cute lil fella. I know it WILL, but it shouldn't

Not sure I understand why it makes you ashamed?

Is it the parents for giving their kids these names, the Shop Rite for refusing to write the name on the cake, or the Express Times fro printing the story?

I'm continually ashamed of the Express-Times. This time because they chose to give this story the top headline over an area high school football team that won the state championship game the day before. I would have preferred to read about local kids doing well over this garbage.

You should have posted the picture that went with that article!

I think these people are chromosome-challenged and should not have reproduced.

If they wanted to make some sort of political statement - why didn't they just change their own names instead of ruining their childrens' lives?

The parents seem like they would meet the criteria for Lebensunwertes Leben.

When I worked at Foodtown we made cakes with no problem, but if there was nobody there who could do the lettering we explained that to the customer. It was a small neighborhood FT so most of the people just did their own, especially after they saw my handwriting.

I think this guy wanted to create a little controversy so he could make himself look like some kind of poor, oppressed martyr whose right to free expression is being squelched. Why else would he insist on the kid's full name being on the cake? If he had just asked for "Happy Birthday Adolf" just like a normal person would ask for "Happy Birthday Jennifer" or "Happy Birthday Michael" there probably wouldn't have been any issues at all.

That is what I had said in my post why did these parents whom are so proud of to call themselves self proclaimed loves of the monster Hitler, why did they not just permantly change their names, why on earth would any decent human being put name on their child. Again this child is yet to young to fully understand the meaning behind having a whole name as this .I only dearly pray that they do not teach further hatred to their children, however with the names they put on their children, its a sad future. Both parents are on disability, name change costs too much.. much cheaper to have a kid and name it your "dream name".

Ashamed for the Express-Times for covering it. They should've covered the football team winning the championship! GO LIBERTY!!!! (Class of '81)

Almost makes those countries where they have lists of acceptable and forbidden names seem like they're onto something. In Germany for instance, you could not name your kids any of the names they've chosen - and for good reason.
