Weird phone call-possible scam?

I received a phone call last night-The guy asked if I was Lynne and I said, "Yes." Without introducing himself, he asked if I was going to be home today btwn 9am-10a.m. I asked who he was and he said he was w/ ING, and that he wanted to drop off the book(?) because there were some changes in my annuity. Again, I asked who he was and he told me his name. He was rather rude. I told him that I had no idea what he was talking about, which seemed to piss him off. He asked me a few more questions about my annuity, and I repeated to him that I did not believe I had one w/ ING. After a couple more questions about my annuity (again, I don't think I have one), he actually hung up on me. Anyone have a clue what this was about, because I sure don't! I did make him verify my name, and while my first name is quite common, my last name is not at all.

Sounds like either a scam or an attempt at a sales call. I hope you called the police and reported him. Was there a number showing? Maybe you should call ING and report it.

Did he indicate he knows your address? I think he most likely does not it sounds like a phishing call. He probably wanted to talk you out of your address and other info he could use to steal your identity or something.

Keep your doors locked and be on the lookout for a strange vehicle driving slowly by your house today. I have an overactive imagination and would be flipping out if somebody did this to me, I think I watch too many crime shows.

I had one similar to that a couple years ago. Someone called and said they wanted to verify my address for a shipment. I can't remember who the company was - AT&T maybe? I wouldn't confirm anything, asked them some questions and then I never received the package (that I wasn't expecting to begin with). I don't know what it was all about.

Now, whenever I get calls like that I report them to the "Do Not Call" registry. With callerid, it's really easy. I get bogus calls all the time with weird numbers - they appear to be outside the US because the format isn't correct.

It's easy, just go to this website and put in whatever info you have. You don't have to have it all. https://www.donotcall.gov/complaint/complaintcheck.aspx

Sounds like a strange call indeed.

If I get strange/unexpected calls like that, I straight up tell them that I do not give out ANY personal info to people who call me. I ask them for their name/ID and their corp/HQ 800# and ask them to call me back in an hour so I verify that their call is legit. If they can't respect that, I don't want to do business with them anyway.

Basically.... When you get a strange or unexpected call like that, don't let them controll the conversation and call the shots. Whether you "think" it may be a legit call, or are simply intrigued by the offer from the stranger on the other end of the phone, don't give out any personal info without verifying the caller. It's just too risky in this day and age.

Did not hear back from him. There was a Great Dane and a 6'4" son in the house at the same time, so was not really worried about my safety. This guy was weird on the phone-once I started asking him a few questions, he really choked, and like I mentioned, sounded pissed off that I was asking him questions. I was so sad when he hung up on me-lol...Still don't know what the call was about. Maybe I am a millionaire, and just don't remember buying those stocks! lol....

I work for JAG and one of our clients just brought in a letter from ING about a "lottery" she had won. Clearly it is a scam. I'd also think your contact from ING is also a scam. I'd report the call to your Attorney General's office.

It sounds like it was a good thing you were on the ball and realized this was a scam. One of our customers was telling us a few months ago she got a call late at night, she was exhausted and tired and they were talking about her checking/debit account was having problems or something like that. Somehow they got her worried enough she gave them the account information and of course since it was a scam lost thousands of dollars. They were able to get it back, but I never realized how the scammers can call late just to see what information they just may be able to get from some people.
