Anyone here have underactive thyroid?

I'm reading a book on it right now. Some people, even though tests show a normal thyroid, still have an underactive thyroid and once they correct their diet, the weight just "falls off." Anyone here hear of it and can give some personal info?

Thanks all!

I have hypothyroidism. I have yet to find anything but common-sense eating and a lot of exercise to lose weight. And even then, the weight doesn't "fall off." It's a constant battle of the bulge.

I was supposed to be on meds (Synthroid, I believe) but medications make me sick and I had to go off of them. Through diet and exercise, my TSH levels dropped - they're still high but lower since I lost 68 lbs.

I have hypothyroidism as well. I've taken Synthroid for a year now. My levels are great now, but no weight "fell off" for me, either.

The doctor told me neither diet nor exercise would help the thyroid. I would be on the meds for life. However, I do Jazzercise everyday (more for cholesterol & triglycerides). It can't hurt.

Me! Me! (raising hand).

When I started dieting and working out, the weight just poured off of me.

Case point.. here are pictures of me two years before, and two years after I started working out and taking Thyroid Meds (after I ended up the ER with what they thought was a blood clot in my lungs, turned out to be my Thyroid was gone). I had my Thyroid tested every 6 mos, by my urging (not my drs), and it was always normal (yeah right). I knew it was gone, but no one would believe me.
Even though I did diet and work out three to five times a week, the weight just fell right off, before I even knew what was happening.

Before (Nov 2003 or 2004?) Note: Puffy face, eyes and cheeks. All signs of Thyroid Disease:

About 18 mos after Thyroid went out in Nov 2004:

Two years after (early 2007):

I am on the upswing again (actually I think I have hit the swing dead on..LOL), simply, I believe, because I stopped working out. I still "watch what I eat", but I think the entire key was exercising/running/weights.

Me Thanksgiving
[

Note, puffy face again. Could be my meds are out of whack again. Only difference is, I feel 100% better now than I ever did before.

Yep, it sucks having a thyroid problem! For me it is UP AND DOWN continuously and has been that way since I was 16!!!
One of the things I find ironic, is that my dh gains and loses weight right along with me...LOL he even did the same thing when I was pregnant with our last child. He actually went from 170 lbs to over 210. he even had a "pregnant" belly!!!

I love him..lol lol

Ohhgodd - Wow you look awesome! Congrats on that weight loss. I only wish my weight would just "fall off." I can't take the meds, so maybe that's what our differences are.

I'm with ya girl....it's an every day battle. Keep up the great work!

Wow Kathy what a difference. I was going to joke and say I wish I could blame it on that!

Growing up my Aunt had an overactive thyroid. She was so thin my Uncle could literally span her waist with his hands. And she was like a person on meth she was always "wired". My Mom said she would wait for someone to finish their cigarette (it was the 60s and 70s) and as soon as they stubbed it she would take the ashtray and empty it and clean it. I remember some old slides where she was the skinniest one at the table and she had a plate piled sky high with pasta.
In her later years she had the surgery and of course gained some weight.

I've been on synthroid for 13 years. Several years ago, I went on a "diet" and lost 7 pounds in 3 months. Kind of like spitting in the ocean.

A friend of mine just told me about a book The Thyroid Diet. She's going to buy it, read it, and tell me all about it.

Freer, I don't lose weight either just by dieting. Spitting in the ocean?? Haha..SO TRUE!

It is a combination of the right meds, watching what one eats, and also ..I believe..the most important is getting your body moving.. every day if you can.
Since I hve stopped working out, the weight has just been pouring back on.

Took me two years to lose 40 llbs, but only 4 months to put it all back on.

I see an endocrinologist now. I had to literally threaten my primary physician because she refused (for over 5 of the 10 years I have been with her) to refer me to an Endo when I begged and begged.
I have been exclusive with him for the last year.
I fired my primary physician after she relented and gave me the referral. However, she made me pay $200 to get more blood tests done when I had just had them done the month prior. She said "I have to make sure I did everything I was supposed to before I send you on to another dr. I would look foolish if I didn't". Uh, duh, so is that why for 5 years you refused to refer me even though I begged? Because you were afraid you weren't doing all that you should have been doing????. Anyway, gone, fired.. OUTTA THERE! (best thing I did)

Anyway, he raised my synthroid dose and things have been pretty much wonderful since. My regular dr refused to raise my dose.
The endocrinologist was furious at my dr when he saw the lab tests that she was running all of those years (10). He threw the results down and said "This doesn't tell me or anyone else ****!" lollol I knew I had found my hero at that time. lol
He orders T3 tests (I think that is what he calls them), which is something my dr never ran at all. It goes deeper and you get a better view of what is going on with a person who has Thyroid disease.
He also has an arsenal of "weapons" that he has at his disposal that he will use if this doesn't work (the raising of my Synthroid dose) which brings me great comfort in knowing that he will be with me every step of the way through my disease and will try all that he can to help me be healthy.

I will never forget though, the first time I saw him (when my thyroid was really out of whack and my meds weren't working), he had me lay back on the table so he could do a physical exam. He then felt on my belly and said "wow, I bet you aren't used to this big belly".

LOL!!!

Gee, thanks???? Just take care of it, will ya???
