Blizzard....first day of winter

Here it is the official first day of winter and we are being hit by a blizzard. The snow is coming down at the rate of two or three inches an hour and the winds are blowing very hard. Last I heard it should be ending sometime early in the morning. The kids just might get that snow day they have been wanting after all! I have a feeling it is going to be a very long, hard winter. I guess on a good note, it looks like we will be having a White Christmas!

I'm not sure it got UP to zero today here!!! Wind chills in the 20-40 below zero category. I think it's supposed to get up to 2 to 4 tomorrow. At least the winds are dying down. SNow on the ground made for some blizzard like conditions here last night and this afternoon.

We will have a white christmas I am so happy and also want all to be safe. P.S. though yesterday christmas shopping I nearly froze and I love the cold weather however for some reason it hit me hard yesterday and I never ever wear a hat, well I did not care yesterday lol, before we left the mall I purchased a big furry hat and it totally flatted my curly hair , however my head was warm because it was a long walk back to the car lol..... Again be safe we have alot of black ice on there now . Peace in this holiday season.. Catherine

We are in the Central Maine area, just outside Bangor. With the high winds its been hard to measure, but they said on the news that we got 15.6 inches. I went to my back door to let the dog out and I couldn't get it open. Huge snow drift halfway up the door! I will be getting my weightlifting workout in today. I did want a white Christmas, but a few inches would have been just fine...

Barring a huge rainstorm, it will be a White Christmas here! Just lovely.... However, I really pity those in the area who had gone a week without power from the ice storm on 12/17 right into two back-to-back snowfalls.

This is one Christmas season I will NEVER forget and I pray I never see another like it.
On the night of the 17th we started getting freezing rain and it continued into the next morning.
By 9:20 in the morning of the 18th I had no power. I was sure it wouldn't last long. HUH, was I ever mistaken. I need something at all times to run my sump pump or my basement will fill with water. Several years ago I invested (to the tune of $600) in a generator. The day before the storm started I filled the 5 gal. can with gas to fill it. When the power went out my neughbor came over and started it. Later that night my sil came over and hooked up another electric cord for my refrigerator and waterbed. That night my dog woke me up at 12:30 to alert me that the generator was distressed. Sure enough it quit and would run no more. So, here we were limited to 1 kerosene heater and 2 kerosene lamps. It wasn't until 41/2 days later that we finally got power restored. At one time there was about 70,000 people in the county without power.
Consequently, NONE of the Christmas goodies I usually make have been made. Even when the power came back on the house was in such a wreck and my nerves were ready to snap any second.
We will be having Christmas dinner at my dd's but minus a number of items that is traditional on Christmas Day.

But thank God everyone in our family is safe.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone.
Stay warm and safe.

Barb,
There were actually 120,000 homes in the county with out power at one time.
Ours went out at 6:40 am on Friday and went back on Sunday about 2 pm.
Sad but some are still out and they say it will be Friday!!

We had flash lights and candles but no heater of any kind.
We spent one night here with out power. Like you we expected it to come back on.
We had warm sleepng bags and were ok until we got out of them.

It was so cold by Sat. am so we went to one of our DDs house. My other 3 had no power either.

I agree I never want to repeat this ordeal!!!

All of you with the storm and ice and no heat -- our prayers and thoughts are with you all.

We wished for a white Christmas but it was not to be. Here in Virginia, the high today was in the 60's!! This weather is so unpredictable.
