Are you a heavier and/or flat footed runner?

What kind of shoes do you wear? I have recently signed on for a half-marathon in less than 12 weeks, and I need tips. I mean, I can probably run a mile without stopping, but I am SURE to feel it the next day. Right now, my arches seem to be sore following a run, so I think I need some better shoes for over pronators. I'm DEFINITELY flat footed.
Also, right now my diet's pretty cruddy - I eat what I want, but I have found this past week that my appetite has decreased with my increased my mileage. Does anyone have tips for beginning runners looking to make running a way of life? Honestly, I've grown pretty accustomed to my size (14) and besides, all my clothes fit! So, whether I lose weight or not, I really want to stick to this running thing because I just feel awesome when I'm done and I want to figure out (1) can heavier runners really be distance runners? and (2) what types of shoes are good for heavier runners?

WOW! That's great! I don't think I could EVER run a 1/2 marathon. I walked the 13 1/2 miles (with a little running here and there) in the Myrtle Beach 1/2 marathon this past Feb., and it was tough...but very rewarding! Gee, I'm shooting to just run a mile without stopping! Last year was my walking year--LOL! I walked the several 10 Ks, the 1/2 marathon, a few 5 Ks...but I never completely ran anything. That's my goal this year. Let's see--I wear New Balance, and I know it's time for me to get a new pair, but I hate to part with these! I run/walk more on the balls of my feet, I guess. Diet--I'm fat, but I'm working on it. I did all the walk/runs last year at 175 pounds! I'm still at that mark, but I'm hoping the running will help to take some of it off. Also, I'm working on eating less carbs, more protein and veggies, and I'm staying away from sugar. BEST OF LUCK in the marathon! Like I said (and I didn't run all of it; mostly walked), it was hard, but I loved it! Be sure and ask for tips from experienced runners. I stood in a COLD pool up to my thighs after the marathon for 45 minutes...and I am so glad that I did! Also, did a little yoga right afterwards--all at the advice of gals who had logged between 10-20 marathons! I'm so excited for you!!!!!!!!! Let me know how it goes!

Heavier runners can definitely be distance runners....I think they find it harder to be sprinters.
