My oven caught on fire....

what a drag. It's a Kenmore and it's only 6 years old.
My son and I came home from the store and we were going to make sugar cookies so I asked him to turn on the oven, which he did. Then about a minute later he asked if I had turned on the stove light and I say "no, why?" and he said he heard a popping sound over by the stove. I went and peeked in the oven window and there was a small flame. I looked to see if something had spilled in there and was burning off but it was the unit. So we had to call 911. They told us to wait outside so we did although I kept going in to check to see if it had gone out yet. It really wasn't dangerous at that point but we waited outside anyway. It was sparking too besides the small flame. So they fireman carried the stove outside to inspect it. Luckily it's the stove and not the house wiring. At least that's good. However, my son looked online and there aren't any replacement parts made for that model anymore. I will call around tomorrow but it looks like we might have to get a new one. Just what I need to spend right after Christmas!!! I had to get a new washer and dryer too last year........whhhhaaaaa!!!! I guess as long as it's appliances falling apart and not me I can't complain! lol

This happened to my Mom once. She was baking a cake around midnight or so... she always baked and cleaned late at night, dunno why.
The bottom unit caught on fire. I was in bed. My mom panicked! She called her bestfriend who lived next door, then she called the fire dept (this was waaay before 911) Her friend came over with an extinguisher and put it out. We lived in a very small town at the time, so anything like this was VERY exciting. So every fire truck in town came.. all the firemen.. even off duty and volunteer ones came! They also used their extinguishers and they ran through the house opening every window and checking for "survivors"!! I was standing in my PJs in the back yard half asleep holding the cat with firemen shining their flash lights on me to make sure I was ok. What a mess!! I still giggle when I think about it.

Glad you are ok op and it sucks having to buy a new stove

Wow, you guys sure knew how to excite your town! lol Ours wasn't smoking so that was good. We didn't have anything in there yet and had just turned it on. Sounds like they used your oven fire as a training session or it was a slow night! lol

Oh Yuck !! Sorry to heard about the stove, BTDT.. It's a pain to have to replace a major appliance just after Christmas when money is already so tight.

I have a story that might cheer you up tho.

We are all electric here and 3 years ago I was going to cook ( cant remember what it was now LOL SENIOR MOMENT AGAIN ! )in the over. Well turned it on and placed what ever it was inside. Standing in front of the stove I reached over to turn a burner on, all of a sudden I heard this sound ( reminds me of the sparklers with lite at 4 of July ) My whole inside of the over turned this bright yellow, blue, reddish color and smoke just poured out the door. Scared me so bad I took off running to the "den door way" But the door was closed and I was running so fast I didn't notice that till it was too late. I hit the door with such force that the door now has a dent in it ( Yep it's a metal door ). Well the full impact of hitting that door running full force threw me back wards on my butt,, but before I hit the floor, I must have reached out and try to catch my balance on the table causing it to flip over !!. Well here I laid on the floor, dent in the door and my table over turned mean while my stove is now on fire !. By this time everyone in the house came running into the kitchen to see what the hell all the noise was. (Now mind ya my stove is on fire and smoke is just pouring out the sides of the door). 1st one to arrive to the kitchen was none other than my less than bright x nephew in law. He was just standing there looking at the stove on fire and looking over at me on the floor, BTW I knocked my knee cap out of place and I wasn't able to get right up after the fall. After looking at me the 2nd time he says " Aunt xxx Do you know the stove is on fire ??" OMG DUH not chit !! I yelled come help me off the floor you moron and yell for s1 to call 911 !. About this time my mom and my oldest came running in the kitchen, Mom grabbed the phone and called 911, My nutty nephew has helped me off the floor and then like my fruity nephew my DD says " Mom Do you think the stove will need to be replaced ?? " (Well lets see, fire, smoke, dislocated knee cap, ER Bill, fire department call, Hmm yea pretty sure I'll replace it !! )Yes I had a bunch of fruit loops living here at that time. Well any hoot, the element had burnt into 2 pieces causing it to split causing that to catch on fire. I went that night at leaving the ER to get a knee brace and got a brand new stove this time w/o any kind of elements to burn into. Oh the fire department came and by then the fire was out, it threw the breaker so it didn't have any more electric to keep fueling the fire... But I tell you, I thought I was a goner for sure when that happen. Now every time I look to den door and see that dent I can't help but laugh. But it sure as heck wasn't funny when it happen.

I don't know about OP, but, that sure gave me a chuckle. Sounds like something that would happen around here.....LOL.

I am petrified of fires. One time, DH put gun powder and dried pine needles in our fireplace to give it a little "kick" uh huh......flames shot out and across the room about 10 feet.......scared me to near death.

Kathy it was very exciting! Our town was similar to Mayberry. Very small, everyone knew everyone and nothing going on. I'm sure the firemen had been bored to tears before that happened.

Oh the funny stories!
Sunset beach-I know that was a very bad, serious day for you but I laughed so hard reading it.
Your x nephew reminds me of a time I was at work and I had the top two file drawers open {4 drawer file) and it fell over on me. I wasn't hurt but the first employee close by just stood there and made some comment like "Kathy the file fell on you" or something similar. I was like "duh get it off me"! lol

Kathy, ours did that last year and it was the bottom heating element. It had basically worn out and it caught on fire. I, too, like your son, thought I had turned on the inside light to the stove.

All we did was go to an appliance parts place and bought a new element. That sure beats buying a new stove.

Thanks, we are looking into it although on the internet it says they are no longer available but I'm going to call around.

Ok, now I have a question for all of you folks. The replacement part is going to cost $70.00. I priced stoves today and you can get a reasonably nice one for $400.00. I have no idea about the life of a stove. Ours is 6 years old which doesn't seem old to me. Should I replace the element or get a new one?

happened to me before! I turned on the oven to preheat while I mixed ingredients to make a pie. Forgot that my mom sometimes stores dishes in there.. plastic containers and what not. By the time I realized my entire house was in smoke and the smoke detectors were going crazy! I opened the oven and it caught a small fire. It was the scariest experience!

We just went through the same thing about 6 months ago, a pop and flame. We couldn't find a replacement part. Our stove was 9 years old. We ended up getting quite a nice one at Sears for a little over $500, they had some cheaper, but I liked this one better. They were doing a rebate special on delivery at the time, $75 rebate. Which it did come close to $600 with taxes and delivery. The next week the clothes dryer broke. I found a dryer off Craigslist for $25. I looked for about a month on Craiglslist for an stove/oven (our stove part worked fine, so we could still cook) and couldn't find one.

Since the oven is only 6 years old, I'd definitely buy the replacement part for $70! Hmmm....let's see..... replacement part $70 ... new oven over $400. With the economy the way it is, that's a no-brainer for me. Unless you have 'money to burn' (no pun intended, Kathy), I'd just replace the $70 part. Stoves usually last a really long time.

I can kind of see this reasoning but on the other hand, if that element burned out in 6 years, how much longer before another element on that stove will be the next to go? And then the next?

Thank goodness I don't have to chance electric elements on my stove. Gas stoves only for me.

Talking This brings back memories!!!!

OMG...I am hysterical here...but at the time I was embarrassed and mortified...
I had just moved in to my house that August...this "incident" happened on October 30th 1998, I was totally addicted to this show Doorknock Dinners( it was a food network show that the host can't remember his name at the moment, knocked on the door of some unsuspecting person and asked if they could look threw your refridge and cook something that night)...Well this particular night the host knocked on this woman's door asked her if he could look threw her fridge and cook something...she said yes but omg her house was a diseaster...I would be embarrassed...So I am sitting there engrossed in this show it was around 820pm my husband wasnt home yet from work and I am thinking to myself...you never know who is going to stop at your house unexpectedly...you always have to make sure the house is clean...just as I finished thinking that I hear a bang at the front door scared the crap out of me...they keep banging and banging and screaming "get out of the house get out of the house"...I open the front door to I swear 10 fireman wanting to come in my house and my whole block full of fire trucks, police cars, volunteer fireman, you name it they were there...so they pull me out of the house and tredge threw my house with all of there armor and gear on and I am thinking wtf is going on...at this point my new neighbors come over asking me if I am ok...I am like yeah they just bothered becasue they distrupted my tv show...lol...so the fireman and whoever went in my house come out to me and tell me it is a false alarm...I am like WHAT...they explain to me that the person who lives behind me "thought" he saw smoke coming from my house..."the smoke" was my dryer on...lol...by this time my husband can't drive up the block to get home and walks up and asked what happened and hoped everything was ok...
I can't tell you how embarrassed I was that this happened...and how all of these people wasted there time coming for something that was a life threatening situation and could have been somewhere else at the time...I did appreciate the person calling thinking something was wrong but that didnt make me feel any better knowing what happened...and how I had just moved onto this quiet block and caused such a bang...lol
I had no idea how to repay these poor people for there and time...so the only thing at the time I could think of was to send a few trays of cookies and brownies to the station house for everyone...
Moral of the story...make sure your house is ALWAYS clean because you never know who will knock on your door unexpectly and don't use your dryer at night in the fall and winter months...lol...

OMG! All these stories remind me of Trent's Grandma Flora. Bless her soul. She passed away several years ago, but the story I'm reminded of is this one:

We got a call from FIL one afternoon telling us that Grandma Flora's duplex had burnt down. Apparently the neighbor on the other side of the duplex had put a potato in the microwave for several hours and left. So naturally, it caught the microwave on fire and eventually the entire duplex. The part that tickles me is this.. A neighbor of Grandma's saw the flames and smoke and came over to tell Grandma that her house was on fire. Grandma then very politely thanked him for letting her know and went back inside. Then she called FIL and MIL and told them "My house is on fire.. what should I do?" Ummm... duh! Start by getting off the phone and out of the house!

These stories are too funny! Sunsetbeach -- sorry but that made me lol! Last year I was cleaning my oven -- it has a self cleaning feature and it takes about four hours for the cycle to complete. Well, something had spilled in the oven (thus the needed cleaning) and I was standing in the kitchen talking on the phone and out of the corner of my eye, I see something odd in the oven. I looked and there was a small flame and I thought, hmm, that can't be good, but it went out quickly and I didn't give it a second thought. The oven was fine -- no damage. Later,I was telling a friend about the fire and she said, "maybe you need to clean your oven more often!" Yep, just a little embarrasing.

QueenCoupon -- I bet the neighbor that called it in was even more embarrased than you were!
