When you were a child, what scared you?

When you were a child, what scared you? The top three things that come to mind are the Wicked Witch of The West in the Wizard of Oz. I would hide behind the drapes in the dining room whenever she came on during the movie. I can still picture her green face and those flying monkeys....ewwwwww! I also didn't like this Bozo the clown doll that we had. It would freak me out when my Mom would draw eyes and a mouth on her finger and move it around like a little person. There's a commercial with a finger "person" and I just can't even look at it! ~Lisa

The movie The Birds use to scare me, for awhile I thought every bird was going to get me when I went outside.

I was always terrified of the dark. I still actually sleep with either lights or a tv on. My kids however have to have complete dark (the older 4) to sleep.

Oh m'gosh, yes on those flying monkeys! I was very sick in the first grade, and that was the first year the movie was on tv ( I think). My dad put a small tv in my bedroom so I could watch it whilst everyone else watched downstairs.
I was half delirious to begin with, so sick I hadn't been outta bed for a few days, and when I saw those flying monkeys I flew down the stairs and leapt into my dad's lap. Geuss those monkeys were the cure I needed? ;-)
I was also afraid of tigers coming to get me, have no idea why, we didn't have many tigers roaming the streets in MN ;-)

roller coasters. I couldn't ride one until I was around 9 or 10. I love them now I also remember shadows scaring me sometimes. You know the kind you get at night during a wind storm and bare tress and scratching at your windows and moving around? It always made me think someone was trying to break in

The Doctor Who theme always terrified me, and we had the old (60's) and new (80's) ones on right after the kids TV. Robots were pretty scary too. Now, I've got baby clothes with robots on them, and like Moog music, so I guess I got through that okay. I was, and still am, afraid to look into mirrors in a dark room.

The basement! Whenever I had to go down to the basement to get something out of the freezer or whatever, I ran up those stairs as fast as I could always sure that something was going to chase or grab me!

My rooster! In kindergarten around Easter the Kindergarten teacher hatched baby chickens and everyone got to take one home to keep at Easter Break. Yeah, I know a long time ago in a rural area!

Anyway, my rooster (named Chipper) was a mean SOB. He's attack you every time he got a chance. I used to have nightmares that my grandma (who lived with us), my mom & I were all trapped in a shed out back and he was about 20 feet tall and wouldn't let us out or he'd eat us like a bug.

I had that dream over and over when I was a kid. Scared the hell out of me!

having my arms or legs hanging off the edge of the bed while I was asleep. I was convinced that something was under my bed and would pull me under if I had arms/leg hanging off (and to this day, I find myself not letting my arms or legs extend off the bed at night).

Only thing I remember being scared of was a snapping turtle my parents found in their garden. At first I thought it was neat and I wanted to keep it as a pet. So my parents said, ok Susie, but don't pet him, he bites and can bite your fingers off!
They put him in a box, and set him in the kitchen. That night I went to bed and had a horrible dream that the turtle escaped the box and came into my bedroom and bit my toes off! I woke my mom up scared to death and told her and asked her to please let the turtle go! She got up and put the box out into the backyard on it's side so he could leave. Whew!

Before that when I was younger... My mom would make me take naps everyday.. and most of the time she would nap when I did.. we would nap in my parents bed. I always woke up before her and the back of her head was always facing me.. I swear... when i opened my eyes.. it wasn't the back if her head it was a BEAR'S FACE! I would lay there scared stiff for a few seconds until I realized it was mama's hair HAHAHA

It's funny - I don't remember being afraid of anything as a child - is that normal? I remember my siblings being afraid of the dark, dogs, roller coasters, etc. but not me. I was the only child out of 5 that was allowed to watch "The Birds" when it came on. And I remember having to go to the bathroom with my brother when it was dark because he wouldn't go by himself. And I couldn't wait until I was old enough to ride the roller coasters.

OMG...I had this same fear too...and still do I guess. I always have to have my feet covered up with blankets...I can never sleep if they are hanging off the bed or uncovered! I think there was a movie once where some kind of creature under the bed grabbed the feet of the person. Ewwwwwww! Some movies that scared me: "Home for the Holidays" (1972) a TV movie about a man who asks his daughters to come home to help prove their mother is trying to kill him. I can still picture that girl hiding and seeing the pitchfork. "Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark" (1973) with Kim Darby...Sally, Sally. Free, free...she set us free!" the mysterious voices chant in creepy unison. ~Lisa

I was PETRIFIED of Mr. Yuk, the green "yucky face" sticker adults put on medicine, cleaning products, etc to warn kids to leave it alone.

There was a really creepy/scary/disturbing commercial that featured Mr. Yuk and anytime I'd hear the music for that commercial I would freak out. I'd run out of the room, cover my head with a pillow, etc but I wouldn't turn off the tv because I was too afraid to get that close to the commercial. I even had to be excused from kindergarten during the presentation the lady from the poison control gave because part of the presentation was showing the commercial.

If any of you don't know what I'm talking about, look it up on youtube. The complete commercial is there from what I understand. I'm not going looking for it because I don't need to relive any of that trauma, lol!

Yep, I used to have that same fear, too. Must be a common one.

I was scared to death of the dark. Then when I finally got over that I was scared that something would grab me from under the bed, also. I used to wrap myself so tight in my blanket from head to toe even in the dead of summer and we had no a/c. I remember the sweat just literally dripping off me, but I didn't care.

Red face

Ok when I was 8 my parents took me to see the movie the Godfather with them it was in the country in one of those big outdoor type of movies. Needless to say the part when the old man woke up with the dead horses head in his bed, I was so afarid of horses for a long time. The other thing I am still scared me when I was younger and went on the ferris wheel at a feast and it stopped at the top and me and 2 of my brothers were on there and naturally they thought it was funny to swing back and forth. I was screaming and thought I would fall right from the seat. To this day I am literally so afraid of rides of any kind no way no how. Great post you makes you think about growing up. Peace catherine

My brother always wanted me to stay out of his room so he had this coconut that looked like a monster's head. It had wild hair and a scary face. He would hang it from the door jamb of his bedroom door and I wouldn't go near his room.
I always hated trolls too.

All your replies have brought back to mind a lot of my childhood fears, and it makes me giggle at this point.

I used to check under my bed every night for several years cuz I was afraid vicious dogs would appear from a (non-existent) trap door under the bed and eat me. This was due to getting caught in the middle of a pack of snarling dogs that ran the neighborhood. Was afraid of dogs till I was in my 20's. Now I'm a bona fide dog lover, must have giant breed dogs as pets.

There were 2 glass ashtrays sitting on the ledge of the stairway to our LR, my older bro. told me they were *skully eyes* and were gonna get me if I ever came outta my room at night. Stayed in my room at night till a teen, I could hold my pee *forever* ;-)

Was also afraid of the dark, seems to be a common fear. Would sleep with blankets over my head and a flashlight on all night (I also dripped sweat but didn't want tigers or skully eyes or flying monkeys to get me ;-)

Saw a movie on tv called *The Screaming Skull* where a skull popped suddenly outta some pond and swallowed up a frog sitting peacefully on a lilypad. Scare the bejeebers outta me, this is probably where older bro. got his idea to torment me w/*skully eyes*. I got the willies even driving by ponds on the bus on the way to school, would close my eyes so I wouldn't hafta see it if the screaming skull appeared.

Don't know where it came from, but was terrified of vacuum cleaners, couldn't even force myself to use one till I was 18yo and had no choice in the matter.

I was one big chicken as a kid. And now? Not much scares me and my dd told me once that she wished she were as *bold* as I was. I thought she was saying I was rude and felt badly about that. But she explained that I didn't seem to be scared of *anything*. Funny how things work out, eh?

I am with you on the Wicked Witch of the West. We would watch the Wizard of Oz every year-some great custom. I was about 7 yrs. old, and remember crying that I was so scared. And while I love my parents to death, I still remember me crying, and Mom and Dad thinking it was funny. That being said, we watched the movie w/ our 10 yr. old and 7 yr. old a month or so back. They totally were mesmerized by the movie, but the scene of the WW of the W. made him bury his face in the pillow. He got extra hugs that night!

For me it was snakes. But as an adult I went to college and obtained my A.S. in Zoo Animal Technology. Needless to say we had to work with them to graduate and now I love them have them as pets.

I hated going into the cellar when the heater would kick on. Man....Thought that thing would come and attack me. I'm still not to thrilled about it and I'm 45. Thankfully, it's at my mom's house and I don't live there anymore. When we go home to visit, I make sure someone goes down there with me.

I always thought someone was following me down the stairs. I would go so fast that I barely touched the steps.
I also hated the snow monster in Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer. He was scary even when his teeth were removed

Thunderstorms and even now I still don't like them at all, you can usually find me and my calico cat Cammie hunkered under blankets in the bed Cammie doesn't like them either.

I have a bridge phobia that started when we were visiting Florida, we came across the Sunshine Skyway Bridge and the next day it was run into and collapsed this was the original span not the new one that was built in the mid-80's. I believe that would have been around 1979-1980 when we were there. The whole thing freaked me out big-time and I could not go across bridges after that without having panic attacks, usually I would have to duck down in the backseat when Daddy came to bridge crossings. To this day I still have issues with bridges but its getting better especially since I went across the one to Kill Devil Hills NC in the fog Dec 27th and came home with a clear view and did not panic at all.

I totally for got about thunderstorms and bridges. DH is a weather spotter in our town. He took me out ONCE in a T-storm. I'm surprised he has an arm left from me squeezing it.

As for bridges.....I really hate going over them. I have no idea why they scare me so much. I can tolerate driving over them but walking over them....Well...We won't even go there. Also hate enclosed places and elevators. DH chuckles when we're in one. I'm like a scolded child since I stand with my head in the corner.
