Unhappy Mom's up at night peeing

My dad recently died and my mom has come to live with us..82, some dementia; parkinson type symptoms but not parkinsons..she gets up 1-5 times a night to pee; she will fall when she walks so we must get up with her at night; so far we have stopped her diuretic (dr approved); she doesn't drink after 6pm (bed about9p) and really drinks minimal all day; she voids before bed; we've brought her her pillow and blanket from home; she's not incontinent so depends won't help; she also takes sinemet- since it was restarted a month ago wondering if anyone has noted increse peeing or not staying asleep with this drug? that's our next one to try and stop (this drug improves her speech but not walking); diuretic also restarted a month ago; I find it hard to believe she got up this many times at home as she would have fallen and hurt herself;need help or suggestions!!!!; we're exhausted; know we could hire night time help but it's $$$$$$$; I will also being going back to work and will need to pay for care during the day;

Has she been check for diabetes recently? That makes you get up to pee often at night.

When my Granny was alive, she had Alzheimer's disease, and wouldn't sleep well at night. We had a bedside potty chair sitting beside her bed for her to use. Of course with Alzheimer's she'd get lost between the potty and the bed and never made it back to bed and often fell.
The potty chair was very helpful. Made her going and getting back in bed for all of us quicker. So we all could get some much needed sleep.

Many women do make more urine at night .
It has to make it hard to get proper rest when you are up and down all night. Sorry for both her and you.

I have no clue to why this happens, but maybe when the body relaxes??

I was wondering if it might be some type of insomnia? I'd want the doctor to consider that. We dealt with a family member's insomnia - it really can get out of hand, to the point where the person is not completely awake or asleep - just slipping in and out of both. It was a scary time.

Best of luck to you and your mom. She's lucky to have you.

Does she have swelling (edema) in her legs? When she is resting flat in bed, if fluid has accumulated in her legs during the day, it may be going back into her circulation and needing to be eliminated. If that is the case she should be back on her diuretic, but having her take it earlier in the day, and keeping her legs up during the day to prevent the edema.

I have this problem when I work nights and don't get much sleep. My legs swell up, and then when I do lay down I pee like a race horse.

what about getting an adult "potty" chair for her room so she does not have to walk to the bathroom. Keep it close to her bed. This is what we do with a woman who is blind and in her 80's. She is up all night needing to use the rest room and had the same problem with falling. This helped her out a ton.

Thanks for your input..We have already spoken with the doctor regarding her diuretic..She's never been puffy at all..Only weghs 85 pounds...No CHF issues...We've held her diuretic and not really seen much of a change..One night up once and another night up four times despite no change in drinking..She's not a diabetic either..We can't use a bedside potty as she can't really get herself out of bed and she will fall trying to get out going to the potty..I'm going to try holding her sinemet and see if this makes any difference..Heard it can add to insomnia...It's the other med change she had a month ago...Hope to find something to help..

If this is something new, has she been checked for a urinary tract infection? With her other symptoms, she might not be able to tell you if there is discomfort when she's going.
