Stolen Credit Card Number ?

Someone used my our credit card info online and purchased an online gift card for $100. I called the bank the same day and they said it was purchased at giftcertificates.com. I called them and they said they would reverse the charges since i stated we didn't purchase it and they did. But it still happen a week ago and someone used our info online, I want to file a report the police and have it investigated and hubby says " we got our money back and closed that account number so what's the big deal and the police have much more important things to deal with . . . so I went down to the police department and tried to file a report and they said my hubby had to be present since it was a joint account. And the funny thing is both my mom and my brother have asked me twice if we filed a police report and I keep saying 'no' but I guess they don't know my hubby isn't planning on it. Do I just let it go???

I've never had it happen, but I don't think I would let it go. I've heard that sometimes these numbers get passed around. Do you have any idea how somebody might have gotten it. . .or just some online hack?

In 2007 about a month or so after my EX and I split. He called to tell me his bank card had been used to buy something from some internet site. I forget the details. He said when he found out about it he called the bank and the bank was suppose to press charges (I think he thought I did it and was trying to scare me) I said GOOD! Keep at the bank until something is done. I didn't do it.
So, I don't know if the bank will go after the one who used your info or not. You can always ask.

Are you saying this happened twice and both times you were able to get the charge removed?

Personally, I would close the account immediately....and I'm surprised that the bank card company didn't insist on it.

Do you think your husband is doing it?

I didn't realize it had been done twice.. I would definitely be pursuing this situation with the authorities.

I am surprised, though, that your dh feels this way after having this happen twice to your account. Once, okay.. twice. NO WAY! Most times they nibble at the accounts. First one is small, then the second one is larger..then the third bite is a big one. I would think by now your dh would be wanting police intervention (or pressing the bank to do something).

"And the funny thing is both my mom and my brother have asked me twice if we filed a police report"

I believe what she said was that her mother and brother asked her twice - not that the account number had been used twice.

"hubby says " we got our money back and closed that account number so what's the big deal and the police have much more important things to deal with . . ."

And she did close the account immediately.

Yeah, that's why I was asking because it was a little unclear. The part that confused me was :"But it still happen a week ago".....I wasn't sure if this was another incident or the same one.

I think the police would be interested especially since it was a gift card. Giftcertificates.com should be able to say who it was being delivered to. Some criminals are stupid enough to send it to themselves. I would personally go to the police but if your DH won't...I mean, you can't force him. Have you thought of contacting giftcertifcates.com and telling them your info was used fraudulently and it was stolen? They might be able to give them some info but then again, they might require the police. If you give them the CC info used, the can probably look it up.

good luck

I don't understand why you handled the situation and not your card company. When I had an unauthorized debit on my checking account, my bank took care of the situation.
Not to sound rude, but why are your mom and brother so concerned whether or not you file a police report?

Hope this clears things up:
I told my mom and brother the day it happened and they are just concerned, we all live within 4 blocks of each other and are pretty close AND they just have no lives, LOL
The bank told me to call giftcertificates.com, probably thinking that I forgot about some Xmas spending or something and then they reversed the charges so the bank really never got involved.
Yes, it only happened once, not twice.
I am sure my brother or hubby didn't do it.
I am 100% sure it is nobody we know, just some computer hack or stolen info. but I don't know how anyone got our info.
It was a $100 gift certificate and it was purchased at giftcertificates.com and it was delivered thru email.
Have you thought of contacting giftcertifcates.com and telling them your info was used fraudulently and it was stolen? Yes, they were the ones who reversed the charges, not the bank. Thus they are not investigating, they just reversed the charges, the bank is not investigating because the charges were reversed and no police report/investigation.

Thanks for all the responses, I really think I should see if the police will investigate. Does anyone know if the police can really track an email address (like on CSI) ? ? ? or did the gift certificate just go into cyper space ? ? ?

thanks for clearing it up. I thought the bank had reversed the charge, not GC.com.

Someone got our credit card number twice. The second time I could not trace it. The first time I found out completly by accident, more or less who did it.
My window to my house had the clips that made it open for cleaning break. I called the manufacturer to try to get 2 new ones. The guy on the phone said they were $3.xx each. I gave him my cc number and waited for my clips. My dd checks daily our credit card to make sure nothing is being charged. Well a net zero charge and a cabellas charge came up. $9.99 and $200.xx. called the CC company right away had it dropped. Called Cabellas (some sports supply store) and 2 fishing rods for almost $100 each were ordered and was sent to some address in NJ.After alot of convincing they finally sent me the address. I called police in that town and told them.. they said sorry but it is probably an empty building and the person who ordered probably called fed ex and told them they would pick it up personally. And also told me I wasn't out anything since my CC company took it off anyway. UGH!! Well several weeks later I still have not got my clips and so I called the window company again and they said they were sorry and would send out the clips right away. I said what about the charge.. they said.. we are not allowed to charge you for these and not allowed to ask for cc info. So I asked where they were located. They were in the next town over from where the fishing rods were delivered. While the company tried to find the culprit they narrowed it down to 2 men working at the time my call was made and I could not identify the voice being it was 3 weeks prior and did not want to make a mistake guessing so the idiot got a free netzero and 2 expensive fishing rods. And the police DID NOT care.

That always bothers me when I have to give my credit card information to a live person on the phone (i.e., like when you ordered the above merchandise). You never really know who is taking the information.
